WD 8TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive

I'm, so far, very satisfy of my purchase
This EHD enables me to save space on my computer and to find what I want on this WD plus ample space to add.

Time-consuming setup
This drive worked immediately on plugging in the USB cable. However, a day or two later I shut down my desk top computer. When I tried to re-boot Windows 10 would not open. I wasted a lot of time experimenting--if I unplugged the drive Windows opened with no problem--searching online for the reason for this problem, and learned that many people have had similar problems. Many solutions can be found online, often starting with recommended changes ... Show More

6 TB My Book
Its a bit early to review this product but I will give it a go anyway. Ask me again a year or two from now. * First, FedEx ground is awful. Ordered on Dec 2, arrived Dec 13. Tracking showed the drive in town early in the week, but FedEx ground did not deliver until Friday. * The drive some formated for exFat. If you are running Windows 19 build 1903 as I am, do not expect the included software to operate properly with exFat formating, eventhough ... Show More

Large Capacity, Safe Storage
This is the fourth WD external hard drive I have purchased primarily for safe storage of large numbers of RAW photo files and backups. It arrived promptly and was operational in just a few minutes using the wizard. Because of the capacity you have to pay attention when you partition and format it. It does slightly hum: the other smaller ones don't, and for a few operations it sounds like a quiet coffee grinder. Other than that it works perfectly.

Working well so far
No issues at the moment. With hard drive performance can change, so I'll update my comment if so. The drive powers on, has password protection that work and I have been able to backup files from my Windows laptop to it without issue. A small indicator of when the drive is running would be great, because it's undiscoverable in Explorer without entering the password in the WD provided software, so that can be confusing at first use.

WD SOFTWARE WOULD NOT LOAD INTO WINDOWS 10
SINCE THE SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH THE WD MY BOOK COULD NOT BE LOADED INTO WINDOWS 10 AFTER THREE HOURS OF CONSULTATION WITH WD AND WINDOWS, I AM LEFT WITH AN EXTERNAL HARD DISC AND USING WINDOWS FILE HISTORY TO BACK UP MY COMPUTER. IF THE DISC HAS A LONG AND TROUBLE FREE LIFE, I WILL BE HAPPY, BUT THAT IS YET TO BE SEEN.

It works.
Pros - Large capacity. Runs without getting too hot. Cons - Power cord/plug is non-standard. Don't lose the power cord! No on/off switch. No LED light to indicate operational status. Overall - It works.

Great for Time Machine Backup. Very quiet.
I bought this to give me more room for all my backup files. I use it on my Mac Pro Tower with Time Machine. It's very quiet. I was able to move my older 4TB My Book to my wife's machine for backup and to use her much older 3TB My Book as an external hard drive so she now has more storage on her iMac.

Dying
I have used many WD external drives. No problems. I purchased this on 7/23/19. Started using it on 8/15/19. Already making a sharp bleep sound, which tells me it bad. Very disappointed.

Love these drives
I have more Western Digital drives than probably anyone. They are reliable and fast. I have over a dozen of this specific drive and I really only get problems with them when I accidentally drop one on the concrete floor. And they still usually work after that! I own some drives from other brands, but always seem to return to Western Digital.

Won't Turn On!!
When I received this item from B&H was not packed properly in a box no caution support inside so this was bouncing inside the box and I told them this and B&H given me 30 days to returned the item but I have no choice I needed to bak it up my files. Aside from sometimes this make abrupt sharp spinning noise I ignore it I wanted to save my files no choice of sending this back but after 4 months this item died and lost my files!!! My advice is if you received the item bouncing inside the box refuse it or send them back .

Good Product
Needed storage for full-system backups. This holds about 2 months of backups before needing cleaned up.

Can't go wrong with WD
I currently have 4 WD external hard drives and they all work great. Easy to use and set up, just plug it in and you're set.

WD: the right choice for outboard drives
If you are looking for a USB 3 outboard drive for your PC, look no further than WD. I've been using WD my book drives for 12 years now. I've run individual drives as long as 5 or 6 years, I've never experienced a failure. Now that 4 TB seems to be the minimum drive size, we all need to remember they need to be exFAT-formatted (Windows). While this provides access to the full 4 TB of the drive, the sector sizes are much larger than with NTFS, meaning the drive is wasteful of space if your average file size is small. Such is the price of progress.

bad news
I waited weeks for the backorder, then finally got it last week. It took over 2 days to copy my music and video to it, and I did one backup of the music by freeing another 2T HD. Meanwhile I had accidentally deleted images from a memory card when I meant to copy them. Recovery software wouldn't recognize the files in the camera so I had to order a card reader. I did that a couple of days ago and used easeUS recovery software to get some of the im... Show More

WD 8TB Ext HD
Western Digital has always made a superior product than all others including Seagate. Better warranty, support, speed, reliability and overall quality.

It works great. This is my second hard drive by WD and they are great devices to back up my work.

Meh
As always, the service from B&H was perfect. The unit itself came with a USB3 cable that is too short (I'll need to get a longer cable.) Also, there is no included documentation for the unit. It is plugged in but there is no indication it is working. It does show up when I view Devices in Windows. On the up side it makes no sound. I would not buy this unit again.

Plenty of room for total system backup or photo storage.
I purchased this drive to do a whole system backup before reformatting. Good transfer speeds for the price and overall a nice tidy package. Looks good and is fairly quite when operating. After a few Seagate failures, resulting in total data loss, Ive become a big fan of WD products and use them almost exclusively for photo and video back up. My only criticism would be that the wall plug transformer unit is massive, meaning it doesnt play well with others, especially when plugged into a power strip. And as always, great speedy shipping and good pricing from B&H! Customer for life.

OK, but!
The W.D.drive is a good value and works fantastic.. The Western digital backup software has a lot of issues.. not recognizing drives. I ended up getting a third party backup software and all is well.

WD 4TB Disks
I have had many of the WD disks fail. I use to only buy WD disks, however, I have started to purchase Seagate disks going forward. The warranty service is good, but you do have to always keep three copies of your data if you are using WD disks. They are not reliable, as they fail often. I was using them for Time machine backups, nothing challenging, and they just keep failing. Been using Seagate for several months now, no problem.

Clunky
I have 8 other WD desktop drives. All have worked well, no failures yet. This drive sounds terrible but it works. Not convinced that it will keep working though. I copy all my photos to 2 different drives, then store each drive in a separate location. Thats my solution rather than a RAID. WD drives have all been great except for this one.
