Great camera, annoying usability bug

Mar 7, 2015

This is a fantastic camera that has fast autofocus, a sensor that makes great images, and a very clear electronic viewfinder that is the closest I have seen to a real optical viewfinder (I also shoot film with a Leica rangefinder). But it has a terrible usability bug that hits specially hard those that prefer to use this great EVF: the sensor that detects whether you are looking through the viewfinder resets the timer that makes the camera go to ... Sony Alpha vs Samsung NX

Dec 5, 2017

3yrs ago I bought a Samsung NX300 mirrorless camera. It was a great camera - and cool looking too. But this past summer it fried out and because Samsung has gotten out of photography, parts are no longer available. This fall we went to Europe for two weeks and I borrowed a Sony a6500 with a Zeiss lens. There are some things that I liked better on the NX but I have grown to enjoy the Alpha series. When I got home I bought an a6000 for 1/3 the pric... Show More

Reliable and compact DSLR

Jul 14, 2014

Nice camera with a compact lens that performs good enough. It is all around compact camera to carry around for shooting a wide range of pictures, from wide scenic shots to portraits. The fact that camera has two dials is a bit of an issue but not a big one because this is not a professional camera that you have to quickly adjust a set of parameters. You generally leave it at Aperture or Shutter priority and then the two dial would work fine for t... Show More

Smaller, lighter camera delivers

May 2, 2016

We own a Nikon D5000 DSLR and use primarily for family / vacation photos (VR 18-55mm) and kids sports (VR 55-300mm zoom), but by comparison the Sony alpha 6000 with 16-50mm and 55-210mm lenses outperformed for these applications. The Sony was lighter and smaller for easier carrying. It had faster auto-focus (both lenses), and produced better low light and zoom pictures for sports action. The Nikon, even with the VR lenses produced a comparably bl... Show More

Sony a6000

Aug 29, 2014

I've had the Sony a6000 for about 2 weeks, before this, I used a NEX-6 for about a year. Big difference will be the menu and I think it's easier to use. There's a lot of menu but you'll mostly use only a few things all the time. I upgraded from NEX-6 to a6000 because of the 24 mg sensor vs 16mg. I like to crop crop out the parts of the picture that don't tell the story. This is giving me less grain than the Nex-6 when I crop, but there is still g... Show More

Perfect Size and Weight

Dec 4, 2017

The only reason why I am giving this camera a 4 instead of a 5 is this: I wish it had a zoom rocker under the shutter button like the A5100 has. With the A6000, one has to zoom via the lens zoom collar as opposed to a zoom rocker on the body. Other than that, I love this camera. I own a Nikon DSLR ... the D7500 with the 18-300 lens, which I use primarily for sports photography. It's not the kind of kit I would want to carry around all day, but wh... Show More

Great Camera

Nov 17, 2015

Over the last several years I have owned several mirrorless cameras. From Fuji, Olympus and Samsung they all were nice cameras but in the end I didn't find either their form, function or IQ to be what suited me. Then last year I took the plunge into a Sony a7r which is my main camera for most projects. But I also wanted something smaller for travel and decided to give the a6000 a try. instructions & manual worthless

Mar 5, 2015

The camera appears to be a good camera but the manual is next to worthless. It shouldn't even be called an instruction manual, it's just a small pamphlet that tells you the name of the buttons on the camera but very little about what they do, nothing about how to format the memory card. I own a video production business and I am not unfamiliar with how to format memory cards I read this manual Cover to cover and found nothing about formatting the... Show More

Outstanding little camera

May 3, 2016

Extremely happy with this little camera. We'd had an old Cybershot for years but decided to go a little smaller. So happy we did. Love the option for the viewfinder in particular because of how much I shoot outdoors. Nice to have that option to get a better picture of what I'm shooting. The LCD works fine even in full sun but squinting sometimes gets old and hard to compose the shot. The ONLY two things I'd change after having it two weeks is tha... Show More

No Buyers' Remorse

Jan 12, 2015

I am very pleased with the Sony A6000. There are a few nits. When you want to view a taken picture, the Sony A6000 is not conventional. On most other cameras, you use the zoom control on the camera to zoom in or out the size of the picture to be viewed. Zoom control on the A6000 is on the lens. Thus changing the size of a view is an extra step on the Sony via the menu system. The SD chip is located very close to the body. Removing the SD chip req... Show More

Light, compact, but serious camera

Mar 25, 2015

I have two SLR bodies and several lenses. I wanted this light camera for the occasions when I don't want to haul around heavy equipment. Secondly, I want to have a compact lightweight back up camera. The grip is very nice for a camera this size, the menu is easy to navigate and controls are well placed. The 16-50 standard lens is a little soft at the edges as I expected from reading many reviews. Great Camera, Great Value

About 15 years ago I had a Nikon SLR that I barely used. I was not interested in all the time and commitments it took to carry, configure, shoot, and develop. For 15 years I have shot all my photos with (sub $200) point and shoot digital cameras and phones (with varying prices). The A6000 is an easy camera to carry. Stong tool, weak sound

Sep 1, 2015

Like many things in life, what is important is in the details. Sony has once again produced a great product. The Alpha a6000 produces crisp edges to main focal points. The grab focus feature allows you keep the focus on specific moving objects or persons while filming. However, the quality of built in mic is easily superseded by most built in mics on smart phones. When filming, you get two sound recordings. First is the flat sharp echo tone of th... Show More

It has been amazing for street portraits and action (the 11fps and autofocus is pretty freakin' awesome). I've been using the 35mm f1.8 for a bit and it is pretty spectacular what you can get out of this little camera. Unless you are doing serious studio work where you need full frame, there isn't anything this can't do - and you won't look like a tool toting around a big DSLR.
