Dark side, a flawed force.

Nov 28, 2015

It is indeed really great camera for both professional and home use (I'm an independent freelance filmmaker, I often run-and-gun, do documentary style filmmaking and every now and then produce higher end videos). Overall design of 7S II is great and aesthetically fits very well with retro lenses. I'm presently using it with my Canon EF lens and LTM rangefinder lens. IBIS is one of the most outstanding features second to the lowlight capabilities.... Show More

State of the art almost..

May 12, 2016

I just used the Sony a7sII for two weeks straight shooting two high end editorial jobs in Asia and two videos for the top publisher in the world and used it alongside my Canon 5DMKIII. It took some time to get used to it, but by the end I was a true believer. The a7sII simply delivers stunning video and stills. For video hands down, state of the art for DSLR size. Stabilization is tremendous, but handheld for a perfect still shot is not perfect. ... Show More

Canon shooter than canon give up this Sony gem.

Dec 13, 2016

I switched to Canon after shooting Sony for almost 10 years. Today I have both the A7SII and the Canon 1DXII. Why both? Frankly, I think it's PATHETIC that I can't have stabilization for the Canon 35 1.4 shooting on the 1DXii. But I can have three axis stabilization with that very same lens with the A7sII. Run and gun is so limited with the Canon lenses. With those lenses with F4.0 zooms you're dead in so much low light. But you can take the 50mm... Show More

Great camera, but hoping for dire improvements

Jan 20, 2016

Just purchased the A7sii back in December. Due to holiday shipping I only received it last week. First off, the body of the camera feels very sturdy and is nice and compact. My main purpose of purchasing the camera is for videography when not using a full production camera. The camera came with two batteries and I purchased two more. I can see how people think the batteries run out rather quickly... they do. However you can actually use a portabl... Show More

Love this camera, but stabilization is not what I'd hoped

Dec 17, 2015

Maybe this should be 5 stars because I do love this camera - the one star deduction is less for something that makes it weaker than any other camera, but rather for something that wasn't all I'd hoped about it. Stabilization. Works GREAT for stills. Really does give me another couple of stops, and that's lovely. I don't like it for video. An unstabilized handheld shot drifts over a few frames this way and a few frames that way. If you're doing a ... Show More

Excellent, big improvement

Jun 5, 2016

The a7s II is a big improvement over the the first version. I also own the a7rII which is my main photo camera. I use the S almost exclusively for video and only occasional photos. This camera IS expensive, and it is even more expensive considering how many accessories become necessity in order to get the full potential out of it. The size is both a negative and a plus. I would be totally happy if this camera was a little larger in order to accom... Show More

Outstanding, but not without flaws

Aug 3, 2016

I've used this camera a lot since I've had it and I just love it. It is a pain in the neck that it is so small and has no xlr inputs, short battery life, small screen, etc. It also makes it kind of expensive to buy all the accessories such as a cage, handles, external monitor, extra batteries and all the rest. But, now that I've got all that stuff and my kit is ready to travel I can't say enough good stuff about it. The picture quality is just in... Show More

The Best Value and bang for your buck! Totally WORTH IT!

Jun 29, 2016

So I purchased this camera because I've was tired of waiting for Canon after years of patience and loyalty! I did not want to buy this camera but Canon really left me choice, with their underwhelming releases and slow updates. With that said, here are my thoughts on the camera from someone who has filmed over 300 weddings with Canon DSLRs. Pros: -So many different codecs and frame rates to choose from. Lowlight Powerhouse

Dec 24, 2016

I've had the A7S II for almost 2 weeks, and although I haven't gotten to fully stress test it to the degree I likely will in time with work, I think I've got a pretty good idea. No camera is perfect, but this camera does a very good job at what it strives for. Obvious stuff out of the way, it's pricey. Maybe not if you're looking at proper cinema cameras, but if you're coming from the DSLR ecosystem this reaches the upper ranks. Another possible ... Show More

Doesn't see in the dark, but it's still amazing

Dec 8, 2015

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this camera and think it was worth every cent. It is an extremely good value. It gets amazing night shots, as well as cinematic shots - within limits. 1) You absolutely need a fast lens. Don't get a zoom lens with a f/4 or above (Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens), it just will not cut it for night shots. This camera can't operate on no light. It needs a fast lens to keep up with it. A good opti... Show More

Not the FS7 but...

Mar 30, 2016

If you are looking for the same color depth of the Sony fs7 guys you are out of luck. It's not happening. Let's face it we got this camera because we want the low light capabilities that's been hyped (definitely not all that don't be fooled). And I say hyped because it's not useable unless you De-noise it and as a result your video looses sharpness. So if you are looking for an fs7 in this camera do not waste your time and money. Also the battery... Show More

Camera is incredible

Nov 27, 2015

The camera sees in the dark. Once you get it dialed in properly, with the right lens, you can do incredible things with this camera. High ISO (by that I mean no higher than 10,000) can still look amazingly clear. None of my Canons could come close. In-camera stabilization means I can use a non-stabilized 50mm plastic fantastic, or a vintage 55mm Pentax lens handheld, and still get smooth shots. Love that, too. I give it 4/5 stars for a few reason... Show More

I had seen YouTube videos with sample footage but WOW... It is one thing to watch a compressed YouTube video and a completely different one to actually view the footage on my 5K screen. The image quality is really breathtaking for the super small form factor. About those menus: I was confused the first day, I watched some tutorials and that was it. A great tool for low light with a compact size and weight

Jan 18, 2016

I'm a stills photographer for film and TV, I choose this camera for it's low light abilities and it's silent mode, both of which I'm impressed with.Silent mode utilizes an electronic shutter which has a few limitations. This is a very well engineered camera though I don't think I'd choose this if it were my only camera having owned and still using Nikons. The silent mode is great although in that mode it limits it's FPS (frames per second). When ... Show More

I'm a former professional event photographer and these days I typically limit my paid gigs to the occasional music performance or stand up routine. I'm normally shooting in small venues with abysmal lighting. Occasionally I'll take on small video projects as well. This camera works fabulously for both use cases. Both the low light and video capabilities are simply outstanding. I use the camera with various adapted manual focus lenses and the newe... Show More

Great camera, might be worth waiting for the GH5

Feb 16, 2017

Great camera for video purposes. Was a Nikon user and got an adapter for my glass to work on this which is a nice bonus. My only issue is the bit depth is only 8 bit which can make color grading a bit more difficult than I would like, but really not that bad. If you're target audience is youtube, then this is more than enough. Just a small note, if you don't need it for a while, the Panasonic GH5 is coming out, and I would recommend that simply f... I am a filmmaker and an MFA student. I've used RED Canon 5D MK III C-100 and C-300. You can push the A7sii further then any dslr I've used in the past. The internal 4K is amazing, however I would record externally to an ATOMOS recorder if I were planning on filming something over 20 minutes like a short film or feature. The codecs suck for me because I cut in AVID and AVID has not release the plugins for the A7sii yet. The only codec that works e... Show More

I owned the original A7S and shot 35 events with it. Everything from weddings to corporate shoots and mini docs. The camera never let me down. So when the A7SII was announced with internal 4K and Slog3 I thought to myself this would be a perfect match for my Sony PXW-FS7 which also shoots Slog3. I would say in 95% of situations they are an excellent match. The A7SII is less than half the price and only does 8-bit and yes sometimes there can be ba... Show More

I've been a Canon user for around 20 years so this was a step out of my comfort zone. I wanted something that was smaller than my 5D mkII that would give me better video quality, but still allow me to take random candid pictures. So far the A7S II is doing this perfectly. I don't have any Sony lenses yet so I've been using my Canon glass along with several Minolta and Pentax vintage lenses. I bought generic adapters for those, but purchased the M... Show More

I do a lot of night time photography, both weather related as well as cityscapes and sights and sounds. I also own the Sony PXW-Z100 4K Camcorder and I absolutely love it, however, it is pretty horrendous in low light. So, any shoots that I did at night, I would be forced into pumping the gain to levels that I just wasn't comfortable with, which for me is anything over 9db. A camera worth to buy

Sep 8, 2016

I'm using it only for video shooting. And after using it for several shootings, I have to say this camera worth the money. It has some cons of course, like it is too small, and several additional equipment is needed to buid a real tool (cage, v-lock, field mon, whatever), and it is WAY too sensitive. You can feel its power when the sun goes down, but this is redicoluously true. You need ND filters to use it on a not so sunny day for outdoor shoot... Show More
