I just got 2 of these as well as 2 of the portable WD 4TB My Passport drives (B&H # WEMP4WDBYFB). WD's portable drives are 5 stars, because you can password protect them and when you connect your drive to a new computer, there's a small 30MB partition on the drive that acts as a virtual CD-ROM to autoplay the WD Unlocker softward. Every WD USB drive I've owned over the last 10 years or so have been awesome. Reliable, consistently reliable, fast and well designed. I bought two. One died in 10 days. Still within the RMA timeframe, thank god. Let's hope the replacement lasts a lot longer. Not that I dropped mine, but have read reviews on these drives, not the physical drive, but the drive and enclosure, if dropped, even from like 1-2 feet onto the carpet will kill the drive. I waited weeks for the backorder, then finally got it last week. It took over 2 days to copy my music and video to it, and I did one backup of the music by freeing another 2T HD. Meanwhile I had accidentally deleted images from a memory card when I meant to copy them. Recovery software wouldn't recognize the files in the camera so I had to order a card reader. This drive worked immediately on plugging in the USB cable. However, a day or two later I shut down my desk top computer. When I tried to re-boot Windows 10 would not open. Helium drive loud, firmware less advanced than before
These helium-filled drives are loud! Fortunately, this drive is much less annoying than the Seagate Backup Plus Hub which had an intermittent deep resonating click. This one just has the occasional strange clicking sounds when idling, but from a normal desk distance they're hard to hear and easy to ignore. Did you expect exFAT?
The two Western Digital My Book WEWDBBGB0100 10TB USB 3 drives I received were exFAT formatted and were immediately recognized on my Windows 7 machines. In theory any Mac OS newer than Leopard can also read and write to an exFAT disk, making it ideal for drives that are moved between Windows and Mac machines. Huge storage at a great price
I use this drive to store my media files (movies, TV shows, music, etc.) as well as my computer backup and it should be a while before I run out of space. The drive was easy to connect and was recognized by Win10 without issues. There are only two minor things I've noticed and they are not really problems. Performing great
This is my first HD larger than 4TB, and all I can say after about two weeks of use is that this drive has not only met but also exceeded my high expectations. Transfering data from my dedicated drobo iTunes library took actually way less time than expected. This 8TB drive is now serving as my main iTunes drive, hosting more than 6TB of data already. Works Fine but Start-up Was Problematic
After installing this external drive I downloaded Acronis True Image WD Edition software from WD's website. After imaging my computer's HD Acronis shut my computer. When I tried rebooting my computer got stuck. I called WD tech support and used it on another computer with them to determine that the imaging worked. Bad product after years of being good
I had WD 6TB external for years, and currently have 4 of WD 6TB and 1 of WD 8TB - older versions. This new 8TB is without an activity light, and it produces a constant hum vibration which can be felt through the walls too, even though it doesn't touch the wall itself. Drive Works Well Except for the Windows 10 Scan Drive Msg
The drive works well under Windows 10. It works via USB2 which is what I only initially had. After installing USB3, the speed improvement was very noticeable. Where the transfer/backup speed with my 6TB WD My Book drives is about 65 mb, the 8TB drive transferred data at about 130 mb. Faster is always better, and when you can do the job in half the time, you have to be happy. I immediately ordered another five drives when the test unit performed so well. I've used internal WD drives for years now and they have always been quick and reliable. This is the first external drive I've purchased, though I've used build-your-own external solutions before. I bought 2 of these drives to replace 1yr old Seagate drives that, from day one, refused to connect to the PC on power-up. I would have to unplug the USB 3 cable, wait a few seconds, and plug them back in. Repeated calls to Seagate yielded nothing. I even replaced the USB 3 cables with expensive gold plated cables which did nothing to fix the problem. (one of the Seagate drives actually stopped running USB 3 and switched to USB 2). Always used WD drives and always have good results. My current setup has it attached to a Linksys EA9500 via the USB port. In this case, a couple of notes. The drive wasnt accessible until I reformatted it to NTFS. Did not come out of the box that way. The hdd itself work really well, cant say much about the enclosure, as i have only use them inside my PC, to me they are relatively quiet (not as quiet as 3tb reds though), but some tend to vibrate some, not a bad drives, specially for the current pricing. I have been using a My Book 8TB External Hard Drive for the past two years now and it works great, the only negative would be that it takes a few seconds for it to wake-up after a long period of time (over an hour). I am using for 2nd copy of backup images and the drive is only online during data transfers. Arrives with drive formatted as exFAT. If using only with Windows, drive should be reformatted as NTFS to improve performance. I did this using Windows Disk Management (Computer/Manage/Disk Management) rather than bother with a WD utility. Easier to work with than Seagate.
Previously had 2 or 3 Seagates to handle my automatic backup needs. The most recent one stopped working after about 2 years, but never informed me that the backups were failing.
