problems formatting for Mac
As other reviewers have pointed out, it can be a problem reformatting this for use with a Mac. My Mac running Mavericks could not format it using Disk Utility; my much older laptop running 10.6.8, however, could. The drive itself has been working fine since.

Handy and compact
This is the third WD Passport HD I've bought over the years, and they just keep getting better. The capacity is actually 3.6TB when you connect it to your PC and check its Properties - still a lot of space, but not really 4 usable TB. Fast and quiet.

drive died in 1 month
Started hearing clicking noise shortly after I started using it. Now after a month, it completely died and the disk won't even spin.

High-capacity backup - works great
I have used WD Passport portable drives for years without ever having a failure. When it came time for a larger capacity backup, I chose the 4TB model. It works flawlessly on my two Windows 10 64-bit desktop systems. Note: if you have an older computer, make sure it can address a drive this large. There once was a 2 terabyte drive-size limit on computers and versions of Windows. If in doubt, contact the computer's manufacturer.

Very nice external drive
This is a really solid feeling external storage drive. Completely quiet. Extremely fast load speeds. Not exactly "plug n' play". If you have any installation problems/questions, Western Digital support is via emails directing you to related articles, sites, and fixes, but they do get the job done with a little diligence.

Good for backups
I run my own photography business and bought this to backup my photos and such. I run a raid 1 with two matching internal drives and I use the WD My Passport as an external backup for safety. I use the WD software that came with the drive and set it to back up twice a week. The initial backup my take some time depending on how much stuff you're backing up but thereafter it's quick and seamless. It works great, backs up what it's suppose to behind the scenes and give me piece of mind knowing I have all my data all backup. Peace!

nice small 4T external HD
It's small, It's cute, It's portable for taking large RAW files, and I use it for my business. Plenty of room and is comparable with my Mac.

Rugged build for travel
It was shipped in a large box that could have held a dozen without padding and must have rattled extensively, but it fired off like a charm. (Alas, not from B&H) I have several Passport an My Book drives and they are fast enough for my needs and have been reliable over the years.

Great price, form factor and capacity
This drive is formatted for PC, and I have a MAC. As a result, I had to reformat it before using. Other than that, easy to use. Also, I don't see the value of the additional WD backup and security software, and typically choose not to install it. I use other software, for a variety of products, and not just for WD - but this software works on WD.

Great for secure storage!
I have already bought six of these so far and will continue to do so for backing up my video projects. The first one was bought nearly a year ago and still works perfectly fine. Versatile and great price point for the data too!

It Works
Well, the thing is doing what it is supposed to do, so I guess that deserves 5 stars...I've only had it for less than a month, so I cannot comment on long-term dependability, but all my 4 other WD external HDs are chugging right along after several years of usage. What is most impressive about this new one is the small size. For a 4 TB hard drive, it is only a little bigger than a deck of playing cards. I use it with my laptop.

Regret this purchase
I just received my 4TB Passport external drive today. Man, do I regret this purchase. In saving files from one drive to another this drive is extraordinarily slow. Painfully slow.

Didn't work!
I needed this in a hurry so I could open up storage space on my device before leaving on a trip. It arrived, I spent two hours trying to get it installed, and then called the WD support line. The Passport was vibrating, I got error messages ("the device is not plugged in") and my computer did not recognize it. The support person advised that it was defective and I should exchange it.

A Trusted Brand
It's compact yet mighty, and a name I've come to trust and rely on for several yrs now. I won't ever use another brand. What else needs to be said? Ok, the cord could be a little longer. Not everyone uses this with a laptop/notebook/ipad.

Photo Storage Champ
I use this drive as my primary for loading and storing all my raw photos. The portability lets me access the photos on any of my computers for downloading or editing. I connect the drive to the laptop and desk computers to make backups. When I first downloaded my 6500 raw images to the WD drive the transfer only took 20 minutes - lightening fast in my experience.
