A fantastic device to help declutter your digital life...
My initial interest in researching a NAS was to fulfill a promise to my wife in regards to years worth of digital photos that needed preserved/stored/shared. I found that I could accomplish so much more than just declutter, centralize, and preserve all the camera media cards, backup CDs, and DVDs of events. With the Synology DS918+ I was able to also centralize and store my music collection which is as important to me as my wife's collection of ... Show More

Synology DS918+ Diskstation
I purchased the Synology DS918+ about two months ago to replace my 5-year-old NAS that was 90% full. The old NAS was made by a hard disk manufacturer and wasnt as responsive as I preferred, and its Disk Management System was pretty basic so I was looking to replace it with a better unit. I choose the DS918+ based on its performance and reviews that I had read, and it did not disappoint. Network response is excellent, and I really like how the Co... Show More

A great upgrade to my older DS212
I replaced a DS212 with this new NAS and I am so glad I did so. The speed it great. I have loved my older device and the company that has continually upgraded features year-after-year has made the investment worth every penny. I am now investing in a device that will carry my forward for the next several years. The migration from my old device was straight forward and easy to do. I now have more space and extra speed to spare. I also have a lot o... Show More

For three weeks it is up and running. No issues neither with DS918+, neither with three WD Red 6TB inside working in RAID 5. With some efforts managed to install all basic software - backup (though USB only), sync with Dropbox, security, Plex is up and running as well (though only within local network). Seems like all is ok and it shall score 5 stars, but ..... - even for basic softto work properlyyou need to study WWW - no proper manuals - to tr... Show More

Synology DS918+ Diskstation Review
I bought the Synology DS918+ Diskstation to replace my previous 5 year old NAS. I choose theDS918+ based on other reviews and have been very happy with the results. I installed two WD4TB Red Pro 7200 rpm drives in the unit and set it up as a RAID 1 btrfs file system to match the RAID 1 setup that I had in my previous NAS. I also added a256GB M.2 SSD to improve its performance. The two additional bays are reserved for future expansion when I need... Show More

Great product, but...
I have owned a Drobo NAS for years, and decided to go with Synology for its performance, for my media storage. Drobo is very easy to setup and use. Synology requires much more technical knowledge to set up, and instructions are poor (I googled videos, and was amused by some videos where they were trying to figure out something basic such as selecting RAID or activating the M.2 SDD). That said, if youve set up routers and such, youll muddle your w... Show More

My Fourth and Favorite NAS!
Have been buying QNAP and Asustor the past five years, but I think I should have remained a Synology guy! Popped in (2) Samsung 950 Pro 256GB NVMe drives, four 10TB WD Purple Surveillance drives, 16GB of Crucial RAM Takes 2 8GB sticks, despite them saying it can only use 8GB max)...set up link aggregations, and wow! Fast, seamless, and a wonderful interface. My last Synology was in 2010, they have come a long way. Package Center has fewer apps ... Show More

Failed after 8 months
Synology DS918 worked great with 8gb synology branded ram, 2x 250gb Samsung 960 evo SSD cache and 4x Western Digital 12tb Gold HDDs. I used this server to share and receive large video files to and from clients. I had it setup using my own ftp and also by sending a client a username and password. This box was super fast as I transferred a lot of gigs of stuff over the 8 months it worked. Then... For no reason unit reset itself overnight. I did n... Show More

Purchased the DS918+ and 4 Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives to replace my older NAS device that was beginning to have disk errors. Fairly easy to setup and move data. Had a few simple question got great and timely help from Synology support. Purchased the 4 TB Ironwolf Pro drives instead of WD primarily because Seagate has a close relationship with Synology in addition to a 5 year warranty which includes a 2 yr data recovery service. Good for team of...one
First of all, I thought the two USB ports could be used to connect directly to the NAS. I quickly learnt that this was impossible. This is a feature that only Qnap NAS offer, making them a mix of NAS and DAS (direct attached storage). My mistake. So this Synology NAS is good if you only need one person connected at a time. Bear in mind max speed through Ethernet is around 100mb/s. So it's hard for our small Video company to actually make anything... Show More

Great upgrade from the DS218+
I can't give a thorough review, mainly because I just use this as a Plex server. People that plan on using SHR-1 should get this, but if you are even thinking about SHR-2, you should get the incoming 5-bay DS1019+. It's the exact same internals, but with an extra bay. The DS418play was probably a better choice for me, but I didn't mind spending extra to prevent buyers remorse. The 4GB of ram, Quad Core Intel Celeron, and 2 M.2 NVME expa... Show More

Synology Warranty Less Than 6 Months
I purchased a 418 in May 2018 the unit failed in Oct 2018 (5 months). I replaced the 418 with this unit DS918+, because the 418 might take some time to repair. Synology had me run some test, I did and reported back on the support ticket. They responded with Unfortunately if the powers off without any drives then the unit has failed its hardware test and reached its end of life. The unit will need to be replaced. Not sure how to rate this
Long story short, I got this cause it has the biggest bang for the buck going. In fact, I dont regret buying this because for the price, I could not afford better anyways. But heres my challenge. Its not being used as a NAS, but a external hard drive. I dont have access to my router to plug it in. So I have it directly plugged into my PC. My main problem is how inconstant it is. Fantastic upgrade from my Synology DS411+ii
I needed more space and more power than what my trusty old DS411+ii could deliver. Based on the reliability of the old NAS, I purchased the 918+. It was as simple as taking the drives out of the old nas and putting them in the 918+ in the same order they were before, booting the 918+, updating the DSM and restoring my old configuration. Synology has some great tutorials on line to make this process easy. All I had to do is reinstall the 3rd party... Show More

Has more features than I know what to do with. Have set up my own personal cloud for our family, all computers backup to it with time machine and/or CarbonCopyCloner without any issues. Bought to replace a older LaCie 5Big NAS Pro and Im extremely happy with the choice... was so impressed I went out and got a few of their routers (2600 and two 2200) and dramatically increased our wifi speeds around the house as well. All their products work on a similar interface and all play well with each other. Id highly recommend if you are looking for a single stop NAS solution.

Not ready for mainstream consumers
This unit failed at 16 months, the problem is in the power adapter and it's near impossible to get a replacement from the company. I id get it up and running but buying a generic supply out of China but its questionable how long this lasts. Overall my opinion is that to to the poor support and rather complicated interface, this unit is designed more for those with a solid technical foundation in NAS servers. A regular tech consumer would likely do better with a system that has a friendly interface, solid support and great documentation.

Disk Station Manager crash only after 1-year
The DS918+ crashed a reset itself to factory defaults. Located the NAS and reconfigured DSM. Array was intact thankfully and after reconfiguring DSM completely the NAS crashed again within 24 hours. The hardware is flimsy and the hard drive vibrations rattle the enclosure. The drive trays use rubber inserts to secure the hard drives instead of screws. I tried both and the NAS starts humming on the shelf periodically. This fact coupled with the controller crashing earns 1 star. Nice idea, and good UI, but unreliable for a RAID array.

Fantastic NAS
I have run Synology for all my photos, videos, and files for the past 4 years and have extremely pleased. It has delivered much more than I expected. Synology continues to improve their DSM and apps, adding more convenience and functionality. It takes some basic IT knowledge to run it optimally and take advantage of advanced features, but out of the box it is more than adequate. I was amazed at how easy it was to set up a virtual machine (which I had never done before). This is one of those rare devices that for me just works.

Great NAS, Okay Plex Server
I purchase this NAS because it was one of the most powerful ones on the market and I intended to run Plex media server on it. I was using two 10TB HGST Heads (these are amazing drives by the way). The setup was incredibly easy and I was up and running in about 30 minutes. I proceeded to install Plex MS with no issues at all. The NAS works great in every aspect except except if you have a Demand for multiple streams transcoding. This is not a fault of the NAS since it's primary purpose is network storage not transcoding

If can afford, buy it instead of the 418play. I had DS218+.
So I had a DS218+, but started running out of space. I had two 4gb (3.7gb) NAS drives. But with Raid1 you only get the 4gb. Four bays (4x4gb drives) gives you about 11gb with raid5 (Shr1). So was deciding between 418play and 918+. I don't care for the virtual machine or docker, as I prefer dedicated servers with proper CPUs. 918+ has more ram and about double the passmark for cpu. I also installed PLEX and its running so much better than when I had 218+ and Nvidia shield TV. For long term I think its a good purchase.

WARNING: Risk of DATA LOSS due to known Synology defect!
I lost nearly 2TB and over 2 years of backups due to what I discovered was a known issue with this NAS. This issue is widely reported, including on the Synology forums. (Just Google for "Synology data consistency check time machine backup" and you'll see the issues.) Apparently the Synology data consistency check causes the Time Machine backup to become corrupt if it runs the same time as your backup. Synology support was unwilling to meaningfully help. I can't trust this NAS.

Great HW but SW needs improvement
I bought a Synology DiskStation with 16TB(4bays). The overall set-up was easy. However, the software is not very intuitive compared to other stations I have used before. Overall a good product but many things need to be learned to be able to have a custom set-up. If you like working with new software/interface then Synology is a good product but if you want to have a more user friendly experience, I would suggest Western Digital or other brands out there.
