This tripod is my first real tripod and I don't know why I didn't get one sooner. It is solid, light and compact. I have the 54 magnesium ball head and this combo handles my 5d mk II with heavy L series lenses with no slipping what so ever. Excellent multi-format head/quick releas
This head is very durable and sturdy albeit a little heavy (but I've hauled it all over the rockies). It also has a quick release plate that supports 35mm, medium format, and even 4x5. I use this head for both 35mm and medium format and find it very stable, even for heavier telephotos, due at least in part to the good sized quick release plate platform. Ok, not bad. A bit of getting used to. Ran a Nikon body with 70-200 and it was good. Not as stable as I would of liked. My tripod was built to handle the weight but ended up using a RRS ball head. Very good quality tripod. Great height without extension and is tall when extended. Perfect for me at 5' 11. When I need to use the extension (I know purists say its a no no) it is solid, I use the timer and I get the shot I need. This is new, so rating based on first impressions only. This head sits in between my old 3030 and the 3039/229, but its weight to capacity ratio is an improvement (3 lb. head sipports 17.5 lb. camera). Reliable and easy to use
Easy to use, and it stays in place. The plate comes off easily with one hand and it doesn't wobble or loosen mysteriously when in use. The handles are a little smooth to feel like you're getting a good grip, but they tighten easily and stay that way until you say otherwise. Made from cheap plastic
Don't buy this. Literally the first time we tried to pivot the center column to the 90 degree position, an internal plastic piece snapped and sent the center column, ball head, and $$worth of camera and lens flying out of the tripod legs. 5 Years Later It Is Failing
This has been a decent tri-pod over the tears. Parts are failing now after almost 5 years. There is a plastic collar in the center post that cracked and dropped my camera to the ground. I would not recommend using the center post in the horizontal position. It is not stable and don't take the chance of it breaking like mine. Also the center post tightening knob stripped. I like to photograph wildlife and, as such, use a pretty heavy Tamron 150-600 mm lens. I needed something to handle the weight and this tripod does all that and more. I like that there are only three sections to deploy and really like the ability to move the center post into a horizontal position. This is a fantastic tripod! I upgraded from the 190XPROB I bought from Manfrotto a number of years ago. It's a little bit heavier and bulkier (which I actually like) than the 190 series and it's everything I expected from Manfrotto: awesome build quality, legs fall out quickly, and is as stable as it gets. I use the this tripod for wildlife, macro and landscape work. It's a solid piece of equipment that's very good in windy conditions where I do a lot of my work along the Hudson River. I have used this same tripod for several years now via work. It's a wonderful tripod, incredibly durable and able to hold so much more weight than expected. Fairly lightweight. My biggest annoyance is with the packaging and included accessories : WHICH IS NONE.
