Unfortunate had to return 2 units.

Dec 25, 2017

I received this item and the landscape to portrait unit was gritty and sticking. I returned and had another one of the same item sent and it too had the same problem. After 2 units directly out of the box having the same problem I chose not to go with this unit for fear of trust in the quality control on this product. Perhaps I was unlucky to get 2 back to back units failing with the same problem. Quite a shame because other than the gritty sticky issue this head was exactly what I was looking for. B&H customer service were excellent thru the return processes.

Excellant mid-range tripod

Jan 30, 2018

Not a cheap little mount but not too pricey. A little on the heavy side, but I don't mind at all for what I do. I was looking for a versatile but sturdy tripod that could hold my Nikon D500 with battery pack and a 500mm lens and this one suits me perfectly. It's probably not one you would want to take hiking but if you are doing landscape, long exposure light painting and some wildlife photography this tripod is an excellent choice. This mount has so much versatility I just can't see how it couldn't give you the setup you need to get your shot. Two thumbs up.

Just spend twice this for 10x the prod.

Sep 2, 2008

I haven't had this a year yet. Maybe 10 months and I am now upgrading to the Markins or Arca Swiss ballheads...This lasted me for my beginning month but I outgrew it quickly Now on to the 3 stars - The head can take a serious beating as I use my tripod everyday in the field - however it does not lock up anymore...at all. I have to use such pressure to loosen and tighten it up every time that I leave with sores on my hands from the rubber handles. Just so you all know - spend the 300-400 on a nice ballhead and quick release and save yourself a stepping stone

Worth it! Durable

Jun 15, 2018

I've been using this for over 2 years every single day, never had any issues whatsoever. I am architectural photographer and i have used it for over 500 shoots, yeah the rubbers at the bottom are wearing out a little but I've used it and brushed it on all kinds of surface and I am surprised its still going strong. the screws eventually get a little loose after all these years but it took me 2 minutes to tighten it up and is as good as new. I would recommend it to anyone whether its their first tripod or a pro who shoots outdoors in all kinds of conditions.

Love the Manfrottos!

May 10, 2017

I owned a different Manfrotto tripod and loved it for the flip-locks. To be honest, I don't like the twisting knobs because I can't instinctively turn them the correct way. So I found myself needing to shoot from near the ground and needed a tripod that could go really low. I have that now with the Manfrotto MT055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber tripod. No more lying on my tummy in the mud, bugs, and sticks. And the center column easily converts to an arm that you can use for flower photography. The Manfrottos are well made and that's another reason I stick with them.

So far so good

May 31, 2019

I bought on a discount deal @ $140 off witch made it reasonable buy . I have only had a couple of chances to use it so far. I shot a lot of landscapes, medium to long exposer water scenics and flowers . Seem to be stable and strong .I have found with center post extended at 90 over flowers it can be a little shaky if you use it vertical no problem . When I get a chance I will see how it work with my Pentax 6X7. But over all quality it looks good the ball head works great, we will see in a couple of years . I killed my Chinese aluminum tripod in 2 years

Well-built, but pay attention to the mounting system

Sep 13, 2019

This is a well-built sturdy tripod that is a bit on the heavy side, but a great overall platform. The only suggestion that I have is for the manufacturer to include a 3/8 -16 to -20 reducer. This is a $2 item that gives the consumer both industry mounting standards options without having to research or order additional items. Even though the description stated the mounting specs of -20, it wasnt until I received the tripod that I discovered the above reducer would be required to mount my scope, hence additional shipping costs and delays in tripod use.

Solid construction; precision adjustments

Dec 14, 2015

Excellent build quality of the tripod, as many others have noted in separate reviews. It's tight where it should be, and all the adjustment clamps are easy to operate. For as sturday as it is, it's light to carry. The geared head operates with appropriate precision, and the quick-release feature for gross adjustments is flawless as well. Holding a gripped 7d Mkii with a 70-200 2.8 lens, it's very sturdy. You'll want to hook a weight to it when cantilevering horizontally, though. Overall, very satisfied. Love the height I can achieve with this setup!

Excellent!

Nov 4, 2018

I have been trying to make do with cheaper tripods for years (less than $150). At a photo workshop on early October over half of the photographers has high quality tripods and ball or gimbal heads. I decided it was time to bite the bullet and buy a quality tripod. I decided on this one, not the most expensive but looked like it was well made. I used it yesterday to assist in shooting a wedding. Outstanding! I expect it to last me the rest of my life, Im only 90 so Im expecting a long and high quality experience. Im quite satisfied with my choice.

Precise and Rigid Tripod Head

Nov 10, 2015

I needed a tripod head to help keep the horizon level while panning and tilting. The built-in levels made it easy to set up. The extendable handles made it easy to precisely adjust the tilt. Panning was smooth. This head was easily able to handle my Canon 7D Mark II with even a Tamron SP 150-600 mm lens. The friction control meant that I could position the camera and take my hands off for at least brief moments without a shift in position. The only complaint I have is the limited upward tilt. I'll continue using a ball head for birds-in-flight.

Another great Manfrotto product

Dec 21, 2015

It's tough to beat any of the Manfrotto products.I grew my photography business using mostly Manfrotto camera supports. I recently tried a ballhead setup from another vendor; although the quality was good, I never felt comfortable using a ballhead in my portrait work. Tough to break old habits. I have used Manfrotto 3 way panheads before(Bogen back then)and I always liked their duability. This new head is very well built and I like the new handle setup they have incorporated with it. You just will not find a better head at this price!

Superb tripod

Dec 26, 2019

I upgraded from an inexpensive metal tripod with a simple ball head to this Manfrotto carbon tripod and a top-end Manfrotto ball head. The tripod is much more stable than my Al one with the head extended vertically. A really nice feature is the ability to mount the arm horizontally, which also is very stable. Another feature is the ability to mount either spikes or claws in place of the rubber feet (both available at extra cost from Manfrotto). The only downside is the warning to stay away from salt water as I live near the seacoast.

I've found the tripod I've been looking for my whole life!

Jan 27, 2016

After many years of being frustrated w/my tripod, I did much research and talked to many patient salesmen @ B&H and found this one. It's sturdy, easily holds my Canon and its 400mm lens. I use it for taking pictures of eagles and finally am getting sharp images. I love the ease & quickness with which I can attach the camera to the tripod, as well as the smooth horizontal panning. There are 3 bubble levels to check, the legs extend and lock in place very easily using your thumb.Leave it to the Italians to make a tripod a work of art!

I'm a Photo and Video Enthusiast for work and home. I purchased this head beacuse I do both photo and video work and liked the features this head offers. This is my first type of nice tripod & head so I didn't have anything to compare this to before making my purchase decision, I just thought I'd start with this head and see how I like it and go from there. I have used it for both photo and video and like it a lot. It takes a little getting used to the operation of it for a first timer like myself but it does Operate Very Smoothly.

MT055CXPRO4 Manfrotto Tripod Review

Jul 13, 2015

I recently purchased this tripod for the purposes of both fashion/portrait/landscape photography. It is a very sturdy tripod. I was choosing between this and the tripod below which was a bit cheaper but for the extra $ this was definetely the right choice. The legs are easy to manage and I love the 90 degree feature that allows you to rotate the head. It is fairly light weight which is perfect for travel purposes too. I would suggest this tripe for anyone looking for versatility that is still in a decent and affordable price range.

Excellent 3 Way Head

Sep 30, 2014

I use the MHXPRO-3W head with a Manfrotto 190XPRO3 tripod and I use it for landscape, portrait and general photography. The head is very compact with the handles retracted, it make storage and transport much easier. The tilt and pan functions are very smooth and much easier to control than a ball head at least for me. I upgraded to this head after using a ball head for a short period of time. The ball head was a bit too finicky for me. The XPRO-3W is a pleasure to use and seems to be very durable. I highly recommend this head.

Very Effective

Jun 9, 2008

Very effective. I was initially skeptical of the spring tension system, but I have found it to be very useful. The head is very sturdy, I actually was in a situation where I had a time critical shot amd was switching from wide-angle to telephoto and couldn't afford to take the plate off the camera and put it on the tripod collar, so I just attacked a 70-200 f/2.8L to a 1D (mkIII) and it held, no problem. It also is very stable even with the 1D in vertical, and the Spring system makes the motion smooth and gentle on the Camera.

I'm relatively new to photography. Recently purchased my first full-frame (5D-IV) and in the process of teaching myself Lightroom. One of the things I noticed is I'm rarely in any photographs...because I'm taking them. Well after some research and consultation with friends I went with the MT055 with ball head. (I also purchased the MBAG75PN for easier transport) This stand is superb for my needs and suits my application perfectly. The quality of this stand provides peace of mind for years to come. I highly recommend this kit.

Manfrotto 808RC4 Head Works Well

Jul 23, 2011

I am using this head on a set of Manfrotto 190XB sticks. I shoot with Nikon D70 and F100 (with battery grip) cameras as well as a Mamiya RZ67. This head might be over-kill for the D70 but it handles the RZ67 quite nicely. The handles are conveniently located and can be reached easily, even with the RZ on board, due to their length. The head is big, heavy, and solidly made. The quick release plate locks on solidly and is removed with ease. I like the double lock lever that keeps one from accidentally releasing the plate.

Great Head

May 19, 2011

Amazing stability and fluidity on this head. This will last a lifetime. The only problem with this and I almost sent it back to get the lesser model, is the plate is different than my other manfrotto heads. Now I have to buy more plates to attach to all my cameras. The plate is also much larger than the previous ones. The plate needs a coin or key to detach. I also use this as an occasional video tripod and the spring loaded joints help keep motion smooth. Not the best video head, but it does what I need it to.

Well built... solid tripod

Jul 17, 2019

The Manfrotto 055 with MHXPRO 3-way pan/tilt head is exactly what I was looking for. Rock solid, and the 3 bubble levels are really helpful in getting the true horizon and all aspects correct. How many times have we assumed we leveled the frame to the horizon only to find out is really wasnt. This becomes foolproof with the Mancrotto 055. Smooth operation with vertical, tilt and pan functions with the MHXPRO 3W head. A bit heavier than I anticipated (tripod and head), but I love the solid results. Worth it!!

Great balance between regidity and weight

Nov 10, 2015

I purchased the Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Tripod as a replacement for an old tripod. What drew me to this tripod was the build, the flexibility of leg adjustments, and the ability to hold my DSLR low to the ground. When I took it for a day at a local state park, I found that the rigidity was more than enough to meet my needs. No matter what I mounted on the tripod. Yet, the weight was comfortable even after five hours of hiking with significant elevation changes. Flexibility and performance make this a winner.

A sturdy and a steady tripod

Jan 4, 2017

Steady enough even for a spotting scope. Thus, should be suitable for heavy telephoto lenses. I bought the aluminum, not carbon fiber version; it's heavy, but I see it's weight as an advantage, as this adds to it's steadiness. It's a tall tripod. The telescopic legs are easily extended and retracted using the locks. Having length marks on the legs would be a good addition, but it's not such a drawback. I recommend to buy a case to carry the tripod around, albeit, once again, that's a really heavy tripod.

Worth every penny

May 15, 2015

I put off buying this tripod for a long time because of the cost, and now that I own it, I wish I would have bought it years ago. This is exactly what I've been needing to take my photography to the next level. I mostly shoot portraits with the lens wide open and this has helped me get tack sharp images every time. This replaced a cheap/lightweight tripod that couldn't handle my heavy lenses/camera without camera shake when shooting landscape, but this tripod has allowed me to nail every shot every time.
