Wonderful tripod/head combination. Couldnt be happier.
SUMMARY Im a mechanical engineer by trade and advanced photographer by hobby. I literally could not be happier with the combination of MT055CXPRO3 tripod and 405 Pro Digital Geared Head Kit. Online reviews tend to have an excessive number of negative opinions because customers who receive defective product (or chose something ill-suited) are extra motivated to post a review. Ignore the negatives. You get what you pay for and that truism applies ... Show More

Manfrotto 808RC4
Tripod: Giottos GIYTL8383 Head: Manfrotto 808RC4 I purchased the set to use together so I might as well write about them together. The generic problem is that when companies develop specialized items, such as Quick Release plates, nothing else fits. Everything, then, takes a lot more time to assemble than the old time -20 tripod screw. I have several other 808RC4 heads, and they work reliably. Big, fat, soft handles on the clamps so just a quick ... Show More

center column exploded into pieces...
First off, I'm going to say that this is my first really really good tripod. The legs are very light, and I coupled it with the Manfrotto 054 ball head which is heavy, but built like a tank. I've used this tripod a total of 4 times. I was having a great time with it. its VERY solid and the locking mechanisms work very well. The legs slide very nicely and offer easy adjustment. If you want a more portable version, i'd say the 3 jointed legs are a ... Show More

A very nice tripod head
I needed a heavy duty and versatile pan/tilt tripod head to handle a fairly heavy vintage medium format camera and I found that in the Manfrotto 808RC4 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head. The head moves very smoothly and effortlessly in all three axis and the control handles go from free to full lock with a minimum amount of rotation. While the specs mention two spirit levels, the head in fact has a total of three. There are two longitudinal tube type spirit le... Show More

Not a Pro Tripod!
First of all im a pro real estate photographer and i have shot approx 1,500 homes full time in the last 5 years and i'm a member of the Australian Institute of Profesional Photography. I had an old 055prob that was showing its age and i decided it was time to upgrade when manfrotto released the new MTO55XPRO3. The new tripod performed well in the first two weeks except for the fact that I kept pinching my hands in the leg locks when i was snappin... Show More

Safety first.
I use this aluminum 808RC4 to be the base for my Toyo-Field 45AII - a 4x5 camera which weighs in at around six pounds, but when a newer style (bulkier) Symmar or similar lens is added, plus lens shade/compendium, filter, BTZS dark cloth and film holder, the dead weight is closer to ten pounds or more. I was using a very good 'famous name' ball head (which is great for my MF cameras), but I quickly tired of the lack of control when aligning the ca... Show More

Very functional
I like the 200PL quick release system and wanted this system on the new head I was shopping for. I also did not want a ball head for my purposes. Those two feature requirements greatly reduced my choices and the XPRO 3way was really my only choice so that is what I purchased to put on my Benro A373T tripod. The head works great, it is strong and very adjustable. My only nit-pick is the way the quick release plate seats in the head. On my other M... Show More

Best tripod I have used!
I was using a a Manfrotto 195 with the same head until recently. I didn't change because of anything about the 195, but after a trip to Russia our host graciously let my entire family stay in their home for two weeks and treated us like royalty. I noticed that she had a certificate on the wall for completing photography school but she didn't have tripod. She fell in love with my Manfrotto 195 so I gave it to her as a gift for her families generos... Show More

What a piece of junk! What has happened to Manfrotto????
I had a set of 055XPROB for years. Using them daily doing real estate photography (3-6 shoots a day). They were great, a tank, loved them. Unfortunately, they ran out of gas recently so I needed new legs. Figured I'd stay with Manfrotto and go with what replaced these. Wish I hadn't! First of all, these things do NOT feel like the tank that Manfrotto legs have felt like in the past. They feel more like a toy. Hard to explain but they just don't F... Show More

Nice tripod... BUT
I am a full time pro, shooting mainly architectural and landscape..Have used this tripod for 4 months, with the acratech GPS ball head, and have been so far happy with the weight and height.. until tonight (glad it was after my shoot) I went to lift the tripod from the ball head (without camera attached), and the center column clamp was loose (this is not typically a problem with any tripod).. and the entire multi-part mechanism that comprises th... Manfrotto ain't what they used to be
When I lost the height knob for my 3021 (yeah, that's how long I've been a Manfrotto - Bogen guy) I started looking for a replacement. I knew I was over paying, but Manfrotto was once worth a little more. Not so with this tri-pod. The first thing you notice is that there's only one screw to attach the head. In the instructions they suggest using Manfrotto heads, but attaching a Manfrotto ball head proved less than satisfactory. With only one scre... Show More

Love this tripod
This is the 3rd tripod I have ever owned, and it's by far the best. I don't think the online product information does this tripod justice. It is very easy to adjust the legs in many ways. There are two extendable leg sections, and the releases are very easy to use. There are four set leg angles that click into place, but you can also adjust the legs at any angle between the clickable settings. You can even extend the legs so they lie flat on the ... Show More

Outstanding Features w/ Quick Release!
What more can I say, this Pan/Tilt head is just simply Awesome! This is my first professional quality Pan/Tilt head and I have to say I'm completely pleased. I made a trip out to the local state park were hugh flocks of Canadian snow geese gather for wintering. After missing my first oppurtunity to photograph the flock since they flew away as I entered the parking area. I setup and watched for their return. After freezing my tail off in 10 degree... Don't let the legs slide and slam into place
Just as another reviewer experienced, I also had a leg fall off while extending the legs. It was due to the weight of the legs, and the force that is experienced when you let the legs slide open and suddenly stop at the end. If you are worried about the legs coming off you can tighten the screws down that keep the clamp on. It is habit for me now to keep my hand on the leg as it slides down and to grip just a bit right before it is fully extended... Show More

Great, solid tripod and head.
I have own many Manfrotto products. I've never been let down by any. This tripod replaced two of my aging tripods. It is very sturdy, just the right height. I like the 90 degree center column angle conversion. It is very simple and convent to use. The rubber grip sleeves on the tripod legs are a nice touch to help when working in the cold. This isn't the lightest tripod, but I didn't buy it for that, I bought it for sturdiness. The leg locks are ... Show More

Good Head, hope its strong.
The Manfrotto 496 ball head seems like a good tripod head. The base of the head is smaller than the older mounts for the Bogen/Manfrotto tripods so the set screws dont really lock into anything. Its got a locking/tension knob instead of a lever so it seems with big objects on top it might be a little more of a challenge to reach the knob. Its got a separate pan lock that is a very small knob and though it is useful to have a separate release for ... Show More

Superb Combination
I have suffered from a drooping camera when using the traditional ball head. After trying several different models, with no overall success, I finally decided to go the geared head route. What a difference. I can position the camera exactly where I want it, without any drooping. If I need to move quickly, the quick release knobs for any of the three axis work great. I do astrophotography, so this was a definite improvement to my workflow. The onl... Show More

Great Quality Tripod
I wanted a quality aluminum tripod to carry on short hikes and this tripod is the best for the money in the mid range tripods. Pros: - It is a manfrotto with quality parts - I prefer the tabbed designed leg locks over the twist design leg locks - The updated design is both pleasing to the eye as well as innovative Cons: - I bought this tripod before the bigger brother MT055 came out which is only slightly more expensive - Center pole pivots on a ... Nice Update From Old 055 Leg Set
My previous tripod was an aluminum Manfrotto 055 from the early '90s. I miss the way I could swivel the center column while it was loose on those old legs and I miss the beefier, more durable feel. On the other hand, you can hardly hold the more lightweight feel agains this new leg set, since that's part of the point of going with graphite. Time will tell how the nylon mechanical parts hold up. Truth of the matter is, many of the aluminum compone... Show More
