What they all say about it's sound is true (i.e. Great rejection, flat response) . So I'll skip that. The quality is what surprised me. It is a beautiful piece of engineering art. It comes with a print out of the response-test of your very own microphone. This fact alone deserves an applause break. The weight is extremely satisfying; you can feel the ruggedness emanating from the enclosure. That, plus its slick look, makes it feel like a lightsaber in your hand. You'll find yourself unscrewing the chassis over and over because the threads are so satisfyingly fine and precise. It's like unwrapping a present. It's the iPhone of hypercardioids. If you're torn between this and another Hypercariod Dynamic (OM3, Beta 57, M80) and you get giddy about precision instruments, buy this. ... More

That's what Steve Albini had to say about the M201. It really does seem to be the universal dynamic mic. It has incredibly high SPL handling and a super-clear midrange, extended highs without harshness, and a really nice off-axis response. Works on basically everything. Nothing bad to say about it at all. It's my first or second pull for all guitar cabs, snare top, hi-hat, ride, live horns -- anywhere you'd use a 57 and then some. I've even used it to mic up classical singers when I needed the mic to reject pipe organ bleed.

This microphone is one of the best hyper-cardioid microphones one can acquire---others will equal it in its usefulness, but not many are better. A lot of folks on here have written about its use on snare, which is does very well on, I agree. But please use this microphone on guitar amplifiers--back off just a few inches from the grill and swing the mic into the sweet spot and it will be like pulling the wool off an SM57 or i5. How do you become a better sound engineer after putting in the time to know your craft?---by using better tools and the Beyerdynamic M201TG is one of those tools. ... More

This is what I wish a 57 sounded like. Tight polar pattern for good off axis rejection. Sounds amazing on Electric guitar and Snare drum, but also where you might not expect to see a dynamic such as Overheads. On overheads the cymbals did not sound too harsh and the snare really seemed to stand out. Much more of a Rock and Roll sound than the typical SDC for this application. I was also pleasantly surprised on acoustic guitar. Again, not harsh or overly bright, but a great alternative to a typical acoustic sound.

Big upgrade from my old SM-57 for snare drum

I had gotten so used to the limits of the SM-57 sound. I had one with a 90-degree elbox built in and that is a very handy feature. It's gone to the bottom of the snare drum now though, and the M201TG is the star of the show. It's much easier to get a wider response from this, not all mid and mid low like the 57. More expensive, not as road worthy (studio mic for me) and seems to like being a little higher off the head, but otherwise I'm very happy with the decision to try this. ... More

Only used it on snare and guitar cabs but it was great. I usuallly use a Telefunken M80S on snare but I used it for the bottom snare mic and the M201 on top. They're both solid and I didn't notice all that much difference but I would take either one over an SM57. On guitar cab I used it for open backed cab behind the speaker-Vintage 30-with an MD409 in front. Sounded great. So all in all I really like this. Seems versatile and a classy sounding mic.

I bought this on recommendation of a great live sound engineer who has talked about the mic for years. It was bought for studio use, and has not disappointed. My hihat bleed is greatly reduced. The drum it's on - whichever of my 5 snares - sounds great. It's not as cheap as a 57, but it's worth the extra money.

A must for any mic locker

Beyerdynamic makes a few mics that I consider staples for any studio, especially on drums - the M88 And the M201 for kick and snare respectively. The 201 just balances the chunk, thwack, crack, and buzz of a snare perfectly while rejecting the hat nicely. I sometimes use other mics on the snare but almost always in combination with the 201. It’s a staple for a reason, it just sounds right.

My Beyerdynamic M 201 TG is effective in venues where other vocalists and instrumentalists are also using dynamic mircrophones. My woodwind sounds are distictive and transparent from those using a Shure SM57 or SM58. For "Live Performance" I consider my Beyer to be superior in reproducing the color and clairity of my tone.

Love this mic on my snare. The top end is a little more crisp and detailed than a 57 but still rejects the hihats nicely. The low end is where this shines, so much depth and so punchy. Would be great on toms as well.
