What more can I say? This is the "Industry Standard" of kick drum mics. I've seen this mic being used on the kick drums in national act concerts more times than I can count. This mic kicks butt. I originally bought the Audix Kick drum mic that is supposed to be so great, but I returned it and bought this one. I got exactly what I was looking for. This mic has great lows, punch, and click(slap). I love it and I'm glad I own one.

Another Industry Standard!!!!

I use this mic in my recording class and also my own live applications and it has by far exceeded my expectations. Its just as good as the AKG d-112 and I use both and love them both. The Beta 52 is the best way to go for all live and recording applications!

This is listed as one of the top kick drum mics for a reason. It captures the punch and keeps all the nice low frequencies in there for a mixable Bass Drum sound. I have it positioned inside the drum (fyi). I was using an Audio Technica low tom/kick mic. I hooked up the Beta and instantly the sound was more like what I hear in professional recordings. I still use the Audio Technica for the floor tom, and am happy with it. Thanks Reverb.com! Chris M

After decades of using my workhorse D112, I ran into a problem with a new, vintage Ludwig kick on which I wanted to keep the front head intact. Too much attack, way too little bottom. It seemed like every sound tech on theater gigs was using the Beta, so I relented. I was a little put off by the close-to-$200 prices I was finding, then searched Reverb. $128 got me a used mic that looked new and came with all the peripherals (case, stand adapter, even Shure sticker!). The mic kicked serious ass in my first use (on a SHU suspension mount, facing the beater head from just in front of the resonant head, near the bottom of the drum, with an Evans EQ pad). I don't like these at all. To me they sound too boomy and bassy, but in a fake inflated way. It's not enough attack for a kick drum mic for my ears. Some people can mix these well in a live setting, but most just get that poofy crappy sound that muds in all nasty with bass guitar and makes my head hurt. I like kick to have more attack so I can distinguish it from the bassist's fingering. But that's just me. I think it's too expensive and just inferior compared other dynamic mics.

I've been engineering live and in the studio for 12+ years and have used every common or fancy kick mic under the sun. I'm never unhappy with how great a Beta 52A sounds and I barely every have to EQ or process it. It's got the best EQ curve for a kick drum mic, in my opinion, and it's PUNCHY AF!! Am I surprised? Hell no, SHURE kills it with microphones. SM57's, SM7b, you name it.. It will always be built like a tank and sound great.

Many "Professional Bassists & Drummers" use the "Shure Beta 52A" in front of their instrument or speaker cabinet with a low profile mic boom stand & microphone cable to record their sound. The Shure Beta 52A is a very tough high quality "Bass Speaker & Kick Drum Microphone". Frequency Response: 20 to 10,000Hz. The DR Pro Low Profile Mic Boom Stand & XLR Gear One microphone cable are both very high quality. Works with both analog or digital mixers & recording equipment.

I do allot of home recordings. I consider myself very experienced 30 years and thousands of hours. I wanted a kick mic for my DW Collectors kit so I bought 3 to test. The Beta 52a when recorded without any compression or EQ sounded like I was hitting a cardboard box. After I compressed and EQ'd it got better but it has a high click in the tone that the other 2 mics don't have. The Audix D6 and Sennheiser evolution e 902 had a better sound out of the box punchy and fat with out EQ or compression. I'd recommend both. I ended up choosing the Audix D6 but they were both very nice. ... More

It's all pretty much been said about this mic, but just here to confirm that this is a great solution for micing a kick drum. When placed properly on a well-tuned kick, the resulting signal is nearly ready for mix even without eq, compression, etc. You may want to flavor it to your taste, but it delivers the basic goods in an amazing way. Low cost, what more do you want? Highly recommended!

I believe Shure has a bundle offered from them that includes 3 SM-57's with one of these Beta 52A Mics. If you are a beginner, needing to record drums quickly, minimally, but still with quality, or on a budget. These are all you need. You don't need a $1000 bundle until you at least get some experience and these will help you to do that. Shure always is impressive for cost.

Just put it right in front of the hole in the front head, no equine, and it sounded great. Typical Shure quality. I couldn't b happier. Highly recommended.

I've been using all sorts of extra mics and a couple of mics from lower end drum mic kits to try and get a fat sound from the kick. With this mic the difference is huge. The type of sound I previously got with aggressive EQ and processing is now going straight into the DAW unprocessed. Very happy with this mic for a kick drum.
