I bought these mics as my first condensers. They are inexpsensive and they sound great. The 990 works great for vocals, acoustic guitars and as a room mic. The 991 is a highly sensitive mic and works well for recording ambience or the fret board of an acoustic. Using these two mics together produce a great atmospheric sound. These are the first mics I've purchased for recording and I'm pleased with them. If you're an amateur at recording or not looking to spend alot of money these mics are for you.

This is one of the best packages I have bought to this day. If you are working with an acoustic artist I recommend buying these mics. (and pick up the 990 shock mount). The 990 is great for vocals and the 991 is amazing for close micing on a acoustic guitar. Make sure you grab this deal before its too late! Happy Recording :)

At first, I was hearing bad reviews about theses mics. When I went to Guitar Center, I saw them for a good price and at that time, I needed a good mic for Vocals and overheads but I was limited on money. I bought this expecting a average mic, and turns out it is GREAT! I always use these mics for Acoustic guitar, and the 991 for overheads. I recomend these mics for the recording musican short on cash!

I love it!

This is a great package to get you started. The 991 is excelent for recordig an acoustic guitar, use the 991 around the 12th fret and then use an MXL V63M near the body of the guitar (move it around to get the desired low end) and you will capture an excellent guitar track. The 990 is built tough and it works well when you need to mic a cab. The mic also works well as a drum overhead mic (get 2 so that you capture the kit better). I could not believe the value you get at the low price. I have 2 of these packages in my project studio and I use them frequently. The case is built well so you can take it with you for projects on the run. Once again MXL delivers a great product at a low price! ... More

I purchased these mics back in 2003, and they have not let me down since! I have used them on many different units, including a Behringer UB1202 and a Presonus Firepod. Either way, the mics sound amazing! I actually use both mics when recording acoustic guitar... the 991 on the fretboard and the 990 about six inches away from the soundhole. The result? Clear, crisp, and powerful sound. When recording drums, I usually use the 990 as an overhead above the left side of the drumset, and the 991 as a direct mic for the hat, in addition to the other mics I have placed around the kit. Amazing sound comes out of just those two! The point? BUY THESE MICS! You will not regret your decision! The price is cheap, but these mics will last you a lifetime! This combo is awesome. The 991 pencil mic works perfect for acoustic guitar or bright sounds and does not capture much reverb off of walls (big plus). The 990 is awesome for vocal or amp micing. I am very pleased with the quality of the products. No on/off switch but thats easy to work around.

I tell all my friends & people I meet about this mic - there's no stopping me now! I may have to buy another 1 this to keep in the plastic & show to people. THANK YOU FOR SUPPLING ME WITH THIS!

I'm not a major pro or anything, but I do have my slowly growing collection of microphones. The 990 is the one in this package that really impressed me (when the reason I bought the package was that I got such a good deal on the 991 - better than I could buy a 993 separately). Anyway I lined up my vocal mikes and set them identically on the board. To my ears, the 990 is much warmer than say the 220 perceptron that cost me more than twice as much. The 990 has a low end warmth that sounded similar to the proximity effect on an SM58 when the singer is up close.(which is what I want sometimes for intimate vocals) but the large condenser 990 is much clearer, fuller, and brighter. No surprise as a condensor that its a "hot" mike, and when used with a judicious bit of compressor, it felt easy and relaxing to sing with for a male or for an alto female. The downside is that I heard distortion faster than my other mikes at higher SPL. Might not notice if you didn't have it turned up like I did for a certain song, and certainly controllable by the singer. All in all a very happy accident, but I don't have any of the extremly expensive options to compare it with. ... More

I saw this in a flyer from guitar center. I needed a microphone badly, and I bought this pair of condenser microphones for only $100. I was amazed at the sound when I recorded acoustic guitar. It sounded almost as good as a Led Zeppelin recording. I'm not that experienced in recording, but I've been playing music for years--three years on guitar, two years on violin before that, and even before that I was interested in a little keyboard that we had. I've gotten back to that recently, with a much better keyboard. Anyway, this pair of micophones is great for recording acoustic guitar. If you put the 991 up to the 12th fret and the 990 a few feet away, it sounds wonderful. Honestly, I wish they could have included another 991. They could have done that and added about $30 on the price tag. Anyway, it's a great pair of microphones, for acoustic guitar, drums (not the 990 for that), and even electric guitar for the 991. ... To start, let me point out that these are two $60-$90 mics that are put together in one package. So it is a good deal. These are good lower quality mics and a great starting point for learning. The mics have a bit of a digital/metal sound coloring. This this might not be a bad quality, and can sound nice for certain styles. Also, it can be fixed through some simple EQ so it's not such a big deal. The average listener might not notice this but it is very obvious when listening to a dry unprocessed recording. The box and mic holders that come with this package are made from cheap plastic. In this respect, there are better mic packages out there that are the same quality or better and have a better visual appeal. I would consider other mic packs before finally deciding. ... More

I've had these for about 2 years. Over that time period, I used these and other microphones from various companies. The only real selling point for this product is getting two microphones. If you're on a budget, these aren't bad, but I'd advise shelling out an extra 50 and getting one GOOD microphone. While I don't have anything truly BAD to say about these mics, they aren't the greatest - everything tends to sound either extremely harsh, or have way to much bass, regardless of the acoustic quality of your studio or the placement of the mic. If you absolutely have to have 2 microphones for $100, ok, but I would seriously advise spending just a little bit more for one great mic that'll sound good regardless. ... More

Be careful not to get too close with the 990... they'll pick up the slightest breath. Recommend a distance of about 10" and a good spit screen. The 991's I use as a pair for acoustics. WOW!

I'm sure you can get a better mic but you will have to spend a whole lot more money. I compared the sound of these mics vs several dynamic mics I have and the difference is amazing. The 990/991 mics have a much fuller and clearer sound for both recording and live performance. Next to the Fishman SA200 solo amp, this may be the best purchase I've made. The package includes a nice carrying case and mic stand adapters for both mics. For the money, you can't beat it. I bought this set a couple of weeks ago. On testing it I was very happy with the results. First, the adaptor on the M990 fit an old stand I had downstairs that required the smaller threaded mic head. So that was a good start. Next, the sound quality of both of these are fantastic. I also like the fact they come in the padded case. I use a PreSonus Firestudio Project and have been recording all of the elect/acoustic guitars inline. The M991 will give me the opportunity to double record a guitar inline and also thru the mic and get some softer more acoustic sounds. Someone on here wrote this was a great buy for the price they asked, and I have to say that I agree with them. ... More
