Great price, preamps more noisy than other interfaces

This interface is a fraction of the price of similar interfaces, such as the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, the NI Komplete Audio 6, the Roland Rubix24, and the PreSonus Studio 2'6). So, the question is, what is the catch? Well, two: 1) This interface is frequently out of stock and hard to get 2) This interface has more noise than other interfaces In particular, when running though the MIDAS preamp, my UMC204HD has an unweighted signal to noise ratio of 90db, which is fine for 16-bit audio, but too noisy to use with 24-bit audio. My older first generation Scarlett 2i2, using the same test, has a s/n ratio of 97db. If I bypass the preamp by using the insert in the back as the input (which requires a special cable or adapter), I get a signal to noise ratio of about 96db, comparable with my older 2i2. Besides the noise, it's a great interface. The drivers in Windows 7 are quite stable. It has considerably less full round trip latency (as measure by RTL Utility) than my older 2i2: 44.1khz has 7.7ms latency and 96khz has 6.5ms of latency. Unlike the older Scarlett interfaces, I no longer feel a need to increase the sampling rate to keep latency down. The drivers are a download from Behringer's site, and install smoothly in Windows 7; they are quite stable and I have not had a driver problem yet. Unlike other interfaces, there is no digital audio workstation (DAW) software included with the program. Since most DAWs included with interfaces are limited near-demo versions of the software, I don't consider this a significant loss, especially since one can buy, say, Reaper along with the UMC204HD for less than any comparable interface. In conclusion, for people who already know which DAW they like to use, this interface has a great price but the preamp is a little more noisy than I would like. ... More

I purchased this primarily for recording guitar/vocals on my laptop in my home studio. I was using Line 6's UX2, but was having issues with the unit shorting out intermittently, and mediocre recording quality. I can't stress enough how satisfied I am with Behringer. This device blows any competitor out of the water when you factor quality and price. Crystal clear sound, low-latency and sturdy hardware make this a great buy for amateurs and professionals alike. I was leary at first, because the pricetag was considerably lower than the competitors, however don't let that fool you. It's worth every penny, and I would recommend this to anyone looking to record at high quality at an affordable price! ... More

When my M-Audio ProFire 610 began exhibiting noise in one of the channels I looked into a repair of it, as I really enjoyed the incredible performance of that unit. Finding the estimated repair was $125, it gave me pause knowing the Behringer offered great value for the money. After looking at extensive reviews of the U-Phoria UMC204HD, I decided to take the plunge. After unpacking, I was pleased to find the quality of construction was equal to that of audio interfaces costing twice and more. The controls operate smoothly and the plug and play operation was flawless. I tried it with GarageBand and it was recognized instantly. Operation was invisible, adding nothing to the recording. If I were to quibble with anything, It's that the UMC204HD offers only a single headphone out. This is a drawback, when there are additional individuals that need to hear the mix. Fortunately, I was already in possession of a Behringer HA400 MicroAmp, a 4-channel stereo headphone distribution amplifier. This surpasses my old ProFire's 2 headphone out, allowing even more flexibility. These are inexpensive units and I highly recommend picking one up to compliment the Behringer interface. If you're thinking of grabbing one of these, I strongly recommend that you do so. The accompanying image gives you a size comparison of the ProFire (bottom), the UMC204HD (middle) and the HA400 (top). ... More

I am happy with the converters everything sounds so clear with very little hiss... The quality I hear in stereo monitor is the same on playback... Took me 10 minutes to get everything balanced out and set up but I love it and for the kickazz price i will buy the same unit if this one ever craps out, no hesitation...

I had a steinberg ur22 (first generation) and when I realized that I prefer to have the pickups of my guitar closer to the strings the steinberg clipped it didn't matter what, the 204hd comes with a "pad switch" which makes the trick, the steinberg or focusrite with a "pad switch" are aprox $110 dlls more, and yes those two brands have new drives every 2-3 months (don't remember very well, but very often), Behringer like once a year, in any case it has worked very well and for the price even better (never tried the mic), it defenitly doesn't have the quality (sound is as good or better as the ur22 I had - but maybe we have to think about degradation, aging, heat, I had it for maybe 4 years). If the volume of the phones is past 2 or 3 (at least my unit) the floor noise will come out suddenly, so I have to increase volume anywhere else when I get closer to that point. I only record guitar. Now, back to the drives, recently I found there is a new drive, the 4.38, I did the update and after that I could not watch video or listen music that wasn't coming from an app using ASIO, it took me like five days of struggle to pinpoint the drive, I contacted behrniger one night and by the next morning I had an answer, very nice and fast this guys, I asked for the older drive that it's not in the web page and I got it and now everything is happiness. ... The UMC204HD is very easy to use, is well-built, and offers more features than alternatives anywhere near the same price point. I was up and running within minutes of setting it up. No drivers or other software apart from your DAW is required if used with a Mac; Garageband recognized it immediately. Sound quality is excellent, and is more than sufficient for demos. The preamps seem to have plenty of clean gain. It is USB powered, and lacks a front panel power on-off switch which would have been convenient. That is the only material design or functional deficiency I have identified, although meters instead of a simple clip indicator LED would have been nice, if unrealistic to expect at this price and in such a small form factor. ... The U-Phoria does many things: first, it is a USB interface for audio in and out; secondly, it is a mini-mic mixer. As a mixer it has volume controls for either two mics or line inputs. It has mono, so you can split an input into two outputs, plus the USB interface. That's three outputs! Very practical device. For example, in a webcast, a mic can feed the webcast while also feeding a PA system and a recorder. Downside: Windows 7 and 10 did not automatically have a driver. I had to download a driver. Once installed, I had to reboot and on another occaison I had to fuss with the driver. On the Mac side, the device was recognized immediately and worked the first time. The second time I tried, I had to plug and unplug the driver. For both Windows and Mac, these are minor problems, but worth being aware. ... More

The best feature on the UMC is the mix knob that lets you toggle between the wet and dry signal when recording. It completely eliminates any lag. It's great, especially if you're using an older system with a slower processor. It's super portable and doesn't even need a wall plug. It runs right off your USB power.
