I've been using the venerable Sony MDR-7506 headphones for decades now and am very used to their sound. Some people say the 7506 is a little bass heavy. I have used these headphones for live-sound reinforcement, as well as mixing some videos at home. This is just some background information for the review. When my new phone didn't have a headphone jack, I looked into headphones that have bluetooth built-in. The ATH-M50xbT is one of the other common studio headphones that many sound engineers recommend besides the 7506's. Audio Technica released the M50x in a bluetooth version which seemed to fit my needs. Now that I've had them for 5 months, I love them! They are a little more bass heavy than the 7506's and I appreciate that. So much so that I gave my wife the 7506's and only use the ATH-M50xBT now. The 7506's sound thin, clear but thin. The bluetooth part pairs easily with my smartphone, and my windows computer. I love that I can use bluetooth to listen to podcasts while I shovel the driveway, or mow the lawn, or whatever. The cord that connects to a headphone jack has a built-in microphone and uses the common TRRS plug to connect to the computer. It works well. Since the cord had a built-in microphone, i wasn't sure if the headphones had a built-in microphone for using them as a bluetooth headset/mic while on the phone. The answer is YES it does. I'm not even sure where the microphone is located as there is no visible hole in the casing. Maybe it's picked up in the ear-cup? The controls on the headphones are slim, with a physical power switch, next, back, and pause. I think the large circular logo on the left ear also does something but not sure what, maybe answer/hangup? As for durability, the joints are metal, not plastic. ... More

I have the ATH-m40x and I absolutely love them, so when the M50xBT came out I thought these would be perfect too, and for the most part they are. They sound amazing, feel great, relatively affordable. Unfortunately I had to return mine due to one small issue. I'm a video editor and in my software, when I hit play, there is about a half second pause in for the audio. The audio and video are not out of sync, but there's just a slightly pause before the audio starts so I miss that bit of audio. I think for 99% of applications, this is a non issue. but for me when I am starting and stopping very frequently, it's kind of annoying. They are still great headphones and I would still recommend them to anyone, as long as they are not video editing. ... More

These headphones have everything you could ask for if you just want a great-sounding, quality pairs of listening cups. The sound-isolation isn't perfect but it's very good considering how loud it can get. The build quality is very good, definitely above-average. The headphones look good and aren't as huge as some other headphones of this type can get. The headphones definitely offer enough adjust-ability to accommodate heads of all sizes and the quality, matte-surfaces are pretty fingerprint-resistant, which is a nice bonus. It has a vast-soundscape due to the emphasis on deep, punchy-bass and clear treble. It definitely seems to glide through the mids and lets the highs and lows dominate but I definitely enjoy the sound. Some bluetooth-functionality is a plus too but it's not a huge priority for me so it was just an added-bonus. ... More

I use a Mac, and for some reason the Bluetooth connection constantly needs to be reset. If I'm using Premiere Pro but playing iTunes or Youtube in the background, if I hit pause on either of those things, it simultaneously kills the audio in Premiere (even though the track is playing). I don't know what is causing this, but it's not the case with my AirPods Pro, so I think it's something with these headphones and how they do bluetooth. Luckily they come with a cable, so I can deal when wired to the desk. It's fine.

I received these in the mail recently and I am blown away by the quality. For years I've been using a pair of cheap wired studio headphones mostly to play my Yamaha DGX-650b keyboard privately, and a pair of neck-worn bluetooth earbuds for everything else. These are light years ahead of both, and I am thoroughly enjoying listening to my playing and my music library all over again. You can hear so much more detail and nuance with these headphones. Unreal. Cannot recommend enough. As a bonus, these are popular enough that many other products are available to customize and augment the ATH-M50xBT e.g. with decal skins, different ear cups, and even a boom microphone attachment to make these usable as a gaming headset with consoles and PCs. It's an awesome thing to have so many options to really make these your own. ... More

Great headphones, sound quality is amazing, going wired to Bluetooth is an awesome feature. Some people said there's a slight lag with audio sync in Bluetooth, there is lag but it's very minimal and doesn't hinder the watching experience. However the biggest flaw is the 3.5mm headphone cable design. The cable is specifically designed to plug into the headphones with its recessed collar, you cannot use other 3.5mm cables as they won't plug in. The cable that comes with the headphones is way to short for any type of desktop editing work or podcasting. If it wasn't for this cable, I would have rated 5 stars and this concern may be the only reason I'll return them after some more testing. ... More

I also own a pair of Bose QuietComfort 25 which don't sound anywhere near as good but have great sound canceling so I use them for mowing the lawn. They've turned out to be fantastic, and since then I've purchased additional pairs. They are rock-solid/well-built, sound great, and are super comfortable. I purchased the BT wireless version (ATH-M50xBT) to use with my iPad and some other devices and they're fantastic.
