I had d7100 for 1.5 yrs and was looking to upgrade to FX. D610 was not attractive due to its 39-AF points (D7100 has 51) and I find D810 unnecessary being an enthusiast, even if I can buy it. I will admit, having owned and used extensively six DSLR cameras over the past ten years, this is my first full frame camera. Exceeds my (high) expectations

Great follow up to D700 legacy
Purchased D700 from @ when D800 was out and it turned out to be a happy decision. D700 was dependable and offered solid pictures and performance. File size was very manageable. I've owned the D750 for about two weeks now and have taken about 500-600 (mostly test) photos with it. I want to give it a 4.5 but I can't so I'll round up to the 5. The D750 is a great upgrade from DX
I upgraded from my 5 year old Nikon D7100 to the D750 and having taken numerous pictures with the D750 I can say that I am very happy with the upgrade! I shot so long with the D7100 that I had gotten to the point where its weaknesses were apparent to me. The improvements in the D750 over the D7100 are: 1. Better low light autofocus capability. 2. No, it is not a D700 but that's not such a bad thing.
I have used Nikon cameras for over twenty years but i'll confine my comments and comparisons to their FX Dslrs that I own or have owned (d700, d800, d610). I shoot weddings and events and most of what I have to say is while using it in that kind of situation. This camera feels good in the hand. It has a thin deep hand grip. I had recently purchased the Canon 6D and loved it for the last 6 months. Ok, so it lacks 1/8000 th of a second and does have some moderate controls similar to D610 or 7200. But beyond this there's so much more. Build is very good, and the tilt screen is more then help. I decided it was time to upgrade my aging D70. My wish was to upgrade to the world of full frame DSLR, which narrowed the field down to D610, D750, and D810. I learned film on a Pentax K1000 and digital on a Nikon D90. When I outgrew the D90, I got a K-3.
