I use the ECM-VG1 shotgun mic with a Sony PXW-Z150. I nearly got another Audio Technica ATR-875R, but that would have meant getting another fuzzy and this comes with (as pictured). The surprise? The included fuzzy has a cage inside so the mic element is truly isolated from the wind - this is very different when compared to using a foam windscreen under a fuzzy add-on and more like using a much more expensive zeppelin. I had a Sony ECM-XM1 that came with a NEX-EA50UH, so I was familiar with the mic's characteristics - but I sold the EA50UH with the XM1... and I like the ATR-875R. So... I flipped a coin. I am happy with the ECM-VG1 and would buy it again... the included fuzzy on a plastic cage makes a good mic great. ... More

I bought this mic after being recommended by B&H live chat. For the price point that this mic is at, I was expecting something mediocre. It turns out that I really like the audio quality. The design is very intelligent and shows me that Sony knows what they are dong and they have experience with making diamonds. The XLR cable that comes in the box is light weight. The mic is light weight. They provide an excellent wind screen. It fits well on my Sony PXWX 70 camcorder. I would even use this as a boom mic for short film work. I think that Sony is under rated and that if put to the test, it may even be better than some of the Sennheiser and Rode mics. My advice is for you to try it for yourself. It is an electret mic, so keep it away from condensation and water. ... More

Compared to the Sony ECM-XM1 (which I have used for several years), the ECM-VG1 is marginally superior in that it has a low-cut switch to help minimize low frequency rumble. Otherwise I do not detect any significant difference when mounted on a video camera. I have not used it in a more controlled environment, but I don't believe it would measure up to the Sennheiser ME66 K6. It is a little longer, overall, than I would have preferred, but I would not hesitate to buy it again.

The SONY ECM-VG1 is an excellent microphone. The quality is far better than some of the more expensive other brands. I used it in a wedding shoot this past weekend and it far exceeded my expectations.

This mic is a sort of 'must have' if you purchase a compact Sony Cinema Camera system. Recently bought for my FX3 and the size and effectiveness is just right and is priced pretty fairly for it's performance. I have an audio technica shotgun mic but it just was too long to mount onto the camera...and I had an on camera Rode mic that didn't fit well either and I don't trust anything but an xlr these days. This is designed specifically by Sony to work in tandem so just do it and you won't regret it.

I am just getting started with video production and I have a budget that resembles that. For a mic that is under $300, it has done more than I could have asked for.

First of I got this on time. Installation was easy, however, I like Sony to print more details of the assembly. After connecting to my Sony HXR-NX80, tested the mic in several environments and it worked fine. There is a big difference between the internal mic and this. It adds up to the capabilities of the setup of the camera.

I would purchase again.

This is a decent shotgun mic for a decent price. The low pass filter works well to get rid of a lot of enviornmetal noise both outside and inside. It works much better than the onboard mics.

If there are multiple sound sources, it tends to garble them all into one terrible recording. I was using a Sony, PXW-Z90V, and it drains the battery about 1-2% per minute of use. It also doesnt fit well on the camera extension that is made for it. Even with the spacer, it still wobbles a lot. Its decent when there is a single source. The range that it can record well is about 5.
