Part of my work is videoing interviews. I needed a workhorse lavalier micrphone which would allow me to mic up interviewer and interviewee. I already own an old Sony ECM 50. The ECM-44B would be the second microphone. The sound quality compatibility between the ECM 50 and the ECM-44B is great. Since both microphones are omni-directional, they are picking up roughly the same amount of ambient noise. The ECM-44B is an interviewing microphone. It does not compare with my AKG Evotion vocal microphones. However, the ECM-44B is perfect for the documentary video maker. I must confess that its output is a little low, but usable, with my Panasonic AG-HMC70 video camera. When the situation allows, I am connecting the ECM-44B through a older Mackie 1202 VLZ mixer to the camera. When I get a few more bucks ahead, I intend to buy at least one more Sony ECM-44B lavalier microphone. One drawback is the fact that you must use the battery rather than phantom power. I am using rechargeable AA batteries to overcome this problem. ... More

We've used this mic for several years to grab the voices on my church's weekly video announcements. After losing it for a month, I bought two to ensure we'd never go without one again. No shotgun, cardioid, or wireless we had in inventory compared for that application. Some detail: 1. Pickup range is perfect midtones for voice, with a little more low end than top. Fairly narrow range, eliminates most unwanted ambient sound. Mic can get overloaded if talent is screaming. 2. Reliable. There's just something about having a solid connection between mic and camera to give you peace of mind. The AA power souce lasts nearly forever, and is cheap and easy to replace. No pops, cracks, or static, ever. 3. Durable, in a tankish sense. Rides around in a vest pocket. Spends time in the dust. I've even taped it to the outside of a car, near the tailpipe, on a rainy day, and it's emerged unkilled and spiffy. what more qualifications do you really need? Only downside I can think of is the stock windscreen, which doesn't screen so much wind when there's a good amount thereof. ... More

This microphone has excellent clarity in many positions and scenarios. I had to film a dozen quick interviews in the middle of a loud and lively conference and I'm very satisfied with the results. Many people had clothing that wasn't ideal for a lapel mic so in most cases it wasn't pointing in the best direction but I still got a clear and bright signal. It does an excellent job of picking up the person's voice and minimizing background noise. It also doesn't sound like most cheap microphones i.e. it's not boomy or muddy and suffers from no interference. I record with a Zoom H4n and there's no noticeable increase in the noise floor that is obviously present in the Zoom. The cable is quite long but is nothing negative; it's manageable. The microphone is a decent size. With the windscreen it's the epitome of conspicuous. I have no complaints with this microphone. ... More

I work at a journalism school and we have about a dozen of these. And let me just say: they get used and abused! They go all around the world when students film their documentaries, and they really hold up to the elements. They are much more reliable than wireless. I would recommend this, but also a cardioid model, because the omni-directional just captures too much ambient sound. The quality is great in quiet situations, but in noisy places the voice can get lost. Cardioid lavs tend to be really expensive though.

I ultimately chose this microphone over the ECM-77B because I was hoping that for a cheaper price, it would still yield comparable quality audio. I've never used an ECM-77B, but I can safely say that the quality of this lavalier is exceptional.I can record voice over in my own home, take out a bit of the natural hum/room tone with an EQ effect or noise removal program like Audacity, and it sounds like I recorded it in a soundproof room. I had to shoot a person speaking in a location that was a noisy nightmare. It was right next to an airport, surrounded by busy streets, and strong winds were blowing that day, yet my audio still came out sounding clear.I absolutely love this microphone. Just be sure to always check your batteries before using it. ... More

I have been using the Sony ECM-44B in my studio work for years. It has always had great fidelity and response. If you use these just watch out for two things. One, there is no ON/OFF switch so you need to remove the battery to keep it from discharging when not in use. Many engineers will put the battery in backward to store it but the case has a place for a battery so your don't have to. Two, the weak spot on this mic is the cable coming out of the battery case. Eventually it always seems to start to short out and it would cost more to fix than replace. At least for me. But I still like them a lot. ... More

I have owned and used regularly 5 Sony ECM-77 Lavalier Mics since 1984. They all still work but the cords have taken a beating. I was looking for a less costly replacement. The ECM-44 is perfect. The mic head is slightly larger than the ECM-77 but certainly not too big. The sound quality appears to be equal, and the cord is possibly a little heavier duty. Also, the cord is some 10 feet long allowing the power supply to easily rest on the floor without putting any strain on the mic. It is capable of using phantom power or a single AA Battery in the cord mounted power supply. I am very happy with this purchase. ... More

I used the microphone for an interview with a woman who generally talks rather quietly. I was recording straight to my Canon D6. This product did a great job of picking up her voice in a natural way. I, however, have a voice in a lower register. My speech pattern is also quite different from that of my interviewee. When I tested the mic on myself, it accentuated my S's and made them very whistley. Bottom line: this mic was great for my subject, but may not work for everyone.

I purchased a pair of these Sony ECM-44B mics from B&H (great people to do business with) a couple of weeks ago.
