Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary Lens for Nikon F

Tack sharp. Macro convenience.
I have the Nikon D3200 dSLR with 24Meg pix APS-C sensor. With my lens, it has a snug fit to camera body. Sharpness is well within my expectations. The outer filter ring does block slightly the focus bright light on the camera body. having the macro function is a big plus. The company is very proud of their made in Japan designation.

A good general purpose lens
I was attracted to the Sigma 17-70mm by its f2.8-4 aperture range and several positive reviews. I have used the lens with my Nikon D7100 and D3200. The lens is sharper than both the 18-55mm and 16-85mm Nikkors. The zoom ring is very smooth and shows no sign of creeping with the lens pointed up or down. The focus ring does rotate when auto-focusing but this has not caused any problems. The lens focuses extremely close, down to 8.6. With the lens z... Show More

dissapointed
I don't know why, but I had a different experience than most others here with the sigma 17-70 contemporary. First I tested it for sharpness against my 18-55 WR kit lens by shooting a test sheet/chart with each lens (using a K-30). The sigma contemporary was sharper, noticeably sharper, but not by leaps and bounds. I then shot photos around the neighborhood, the same scenes with both lenses. I was surprised to see that the kit lens was consistentl... Show More

Great Product
I began to upgrade my equipment and needed a non-prime lens. I had purchased a used 30mm ex and fell in love with sigma. I read a lot about this lens and it was a toss up between the canon 17-40 or this one. I chose this lens and instantly fell in love although there is a little lens creep. Pictures are sharp and i mean sharp. I do a lot of night photography and althoug there is slight flare its easly edited. Over all this is my everyday lens. Other lenses sigma 30mm, canon 50mm, lens baby spark.

Great lens!
I bought this lens to be a walk around, general lens. I used it to take some portraits and loved it. The low light capability is a big step up from the kit lens. The macro is also a very nice to feature to have. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Image scroll issue with D7100
Giving one star to attract attention. I read dozens of reviews before I bought this lens, and found not a single mention of this issue. When mounted on D7100, in image playback mode, image scrolling requires repeatedly pressing up/down/left/right navigation buttons. Holding a button to scroll no longer works.I googled the issue and quickly found a thread on DPreview.......

Very impressed !!
Just got this lens for my Canon 7D. I had the older version which I never liked. This lens is about 1/3 smaller than the older version and has a much nicer finish, and just like many of the reviews here say it does take better quality images. The image stabilization seems to work better too. I tried the lens hood out immediately due to other reviewers complaints. The hood works fine,,,does not feel loose or wobble like some people have reported. ... Show More

Fantastic Lens
Absolutely a fantastic focal lenght for my APS-C sensor. This is real winner for my wedding and events.

good lens for the money
This is a very positive step up from a kit lens. Only negative is it steps from 2.4 to 3.2 very quickly when zooming. Otherwise it is very sharp and the autofocus works very well on a Canon body.

Love Sigma lenses, but returned this!!!
I'm not ready to buy the top-tier pricey super fast lenses for my Canon Rebel T3i, so I love Sigma lenses for the excellent overall quality, and price -- but the quality can vary!! I've tried out five Sigma lens, and now own three --two returned. First lens was a Sigma wide angle 10-20. Love it for creative close-ups, vivid color. Second lens was a Sigma 50-150. SUPER love it for fast-moving event shooting. Though low-light can be an issue, that'... Show More

A fine 'walk around' lens
I recently took stock of my gear and decided that given a couple of upcoming trips where I wouldn't care to lug around my whole bag, that I would reconsider my 'walk around' lens. For a number of years that's been a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom. It's a fine lens and I have no truly serious complaints about it. However, it is heavy and does suffer from barrel creep and like a lot of lenses, the hood wants to come off.I also recognized that I rare... Show More

What a great lens
I used the wide angle lens to photograph my log home raising. I could get in close for pictures without have to stand two miles away.

Good for Photo not so Good for Video
It's a great overall, lightweight lens for photography, but not well suited for video applications, which was my primary reason why I bought this lens. The HSM, Hyper Sonic Motor wasn't all that quiet and smooth in auto focusing on my Canon 70D. Also, I wish that auto focusing ring would be wider/bigger and smoother for better fine tune capabilities in manual focusing.

Great lens
This lens replaced my Nikon 16-85mm and my Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 VC. Both of those lenses had an annoying property where they required different autofocus adjustment settings for the extremes of the zoom range. Adjusting for 16mm meant 85mm was just out of focus, for example. The USB dock with this Sigma ensures that this lens won't have this issue, if it does, it's easily fixable. What point is having sharp optics if you can't get your subject in s... Show More

Feels great - Good image quality
I use this lens as my general walkabout on my D5100. I primarily shoot architecture and nature, so focal range works well for me. It has a nice weight and feel to the components. The fairly tight action on the zoom, which I like, gives a nice feeling of control. The macro (+/- 9) and fast f/2.8 make it a great overall versatile lens. Good sharp image quality, not fantastic, but good for the price. Autofocus is reasonably fast. No vignetting, but ... Show More

my next lens!
rented this lens as i am debating my next all purpose lens for video. considered tamron and sigmas 2.8.... but im sold on this lens. blown away with this new sigma lens as i have an older sigma which i never really liked. i really wanted a lens with 2.8 all the way, but the 70mm and macro is a huge benefit for me. i shoot wedding video so the extra 20mm comes in handy. i messed around with the macro shooting some stills and was AMAZED with qualit... Early Verdict is High
I just received the 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC lens for Pentax. Although it may be to soon to provide a more complete review, my early verdict is high in these aspects: 1) I'm very satified with the picture quality of indoor images, even with no flash; 2) the lens performs very well on the Pentax K5, including auto focus, vertical carrying position (lens creeP), weight, look-and-feel, and 3) I have experienced neither noticeable/distracting distortion at... Replaced my nikon 16-85 with this!
This has become my main walk around lens. The extra stop in speed allows enough selective focus for nice portraits at 70mm plus focuses close enough to cover the flowers etc. I couldn't do this with the 16-85 nikon. It seems sharp all the way to the corners, even at 17mm which some reviews claim it isn't. I'm highly pleased with the performance and usefullness of this lens!

Great All Around Lens
I bought the lens to replace a Tamron 17-35 that was a good lens. This lens is amazing! Solid build, focuses quickly and the images I get are tack sharp. I love photography, so I am interested in great images, not the technical details. There are plenty of people that do a good job of providing all the specifics. When researching, I saw some complaints about the lens hood being easy to knock off. Mine is fine and I would have to work at it, to lo... Show More

Much better than expected.
I purchased the new Sigma to fill my need for a longer zoom range than my Pentax 16-45 F4 zoom. This defiantly filled my needs. In comparison to the Pentax lens, the only weekends is at 17mm - where the Pentax shines (with the exception of CA). This is the first Sigma lens the I have really liked.Pro:Great zoom rangeGreat build qualitySharp images from 24mm upFast silent focusingLow chromatic aberrationsFirm but well dampened zoom ringCon:Soft corners at 17mmUsed on a Pentax K5iisI have and will recommend this lens to friends

Great general purpose lens
I was looking for a step-up lens from a kit lens. I researched various sources and came to rely on DXOMark. While kit lenses are rated 9-11 of 40 points, this lens scored 16-17. I have had the lens for a couple of months and it has exceeded my expectation. The images are very sharp, the stabilization effective and the focal lengths very useable. It has become my go-to lens.

Incredibly versatile
First thing you notice is that this is a pretty lens. Sigma's re-design is elegant and understated; it's very attractive in my opinion. The fit, finish, and materials are all excellent, especially at this price point. This is the sort of product that can give plastic a good name. The action of the turning rings and switches feels precise and controlled. In terms of ergonomics, the only complaints I have are that the zoom ring is a little stiff (o... Show More
