OK for video, but terrible for photography

Sep 20, 2017

Purchased instead of another 5D. Although some of the features are great, such as the low light ability and 4k, it still has a lot of room for improvement and would not buy again. For me, it will end up being a third backup in my bag, and used for the rare low light shots I sometimes need. Terrible for action. Terrible for photography. Terrible for most applications outside of low light. Focus is very very slow. Also, still have to use Canon glass as the Sony lenses are also terrible.

Marvelous camera!

Jan 16, 2017

I like to shoot wildlife (especially deer). Usually the best time to do this is very early in the morning & on a dark day. Finally, someone built a camera whose ISO can be turned up to fairly high numbers to compensate for the low amount of light, & yet, you still get VERY nice quality pictures, without having to use Photoshop to clean up lots of unwanted artifacts etc. This is the camera I have always wanted, but no one ever previously built one that can do what the A7S ll can do.

Awesome low light and 4k

Apr 15, 2019

Considering its a few years old this thing is still the low light king (Until the A7siii comes out). Amazing reliable camera with a few down sides such as the LCD screen, battery life, cropped 120fps HD but honestly doesnt take away from how brilliant this camera is. If youre into video and need the low light versatility, I recommend this 100%. Used it multiple times for our YouTube video Ill put the link below on an example shoot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vHynJLvaYs&t=25s

Power Filmmaking tool

Mar 8, 2016

As most people know this is an incredibly powerful filmmaking tool. It definitely has it's flaws, but overall worth it. Some downsides include the battery life which is fairly solvable by buying extra batteries and the battery grip. The size of the record button is a bit irksome as well but you can program other buttons do this. The picture profiles have their flaws as well, I've found it super important to test out the picture profiles that work for me and how editable they are.

great camera

Jul 22, 2016

I was interested in the Sony A7sii for their ability to internal 4K recording, make shots at 120 fps and take pictures of good quality. I have a couple of sessions of work done with sigma m11 adapter and the camera responds very well with my mount lenses canon. I have also conducted interviews and sound left me satisfied, working directly with wireless lavalier direct to camera, with very good results. It is a comfortable and versatile team. Even knowing for technical details.

So far so good

Feb 15, 2016

Love it so far. I own multiple of 5Dm3 for wedding cinema. This sony takes care of the other half of the creativity that canon has not privided yet. I am a canon but feel like they aren't really picking up on the video aspects for us like sony did. So the question is who do i stay loyal to? Also will i come back to canon? Only time will tell. I'm very picky with my reaearch and so far I'm happy with this a7sii. For what you pay for we definitely get a lot more out of it.

I am excited to try out my new Sony Alpha a7S II!

Dec 30, 2016

Can't comment a lot since I just received my camera, but based on the reviews I'm expecting great performance. My only concern relates to the poor reviews I've seen regarding Sony's customer service if there is a problem with the camera. From what I can tell, Sony has a great product, but lousy customer service if something goes wrong. I hope if I need Sony's customer service in the future, it is better than than others have reported in reviews on various Internet sites.

Good camera

Apr 13, 2016

The camera is really decent. For the price though I really think there were some things that could be better. The screen is not touchscreen and the focus peaking is not anything like my GH4. The shutter button not being used for a record button is pretty annoying as well. Overall though the camera seems good I haven't gotten down editing in S-LOG 3 yet but it looks great when others use it. One other drawback is when shooting in 120 FPS the camera goes into crop mode

Beautiful pictures in manageable file sizes!

Feb 28, 2017

I went backwards to 12mp and couldn't be happier. This cameras beautifully clean and small file size make this camera the best for web viewing pics ever. I wanted to minimize my work flow for snapshots I share and the race to 100mp just adds time and bloat for that. Obviously if you are printing huge landscapes get another camera, but if you enjoy just taking pictures and sharing them, this camera makes the most beautiful pics of any I've owned. So happy I regressed!

Best Camera I ever owned

Mar 22, 2016

I recently sold my Canon 5d2 and Panasonic Gh4 and puchased the A7sii. This piece of gear is brilliant. I am a videographer always on the move and the internal 4K recording delivers breathtaking crisp images. Most of my client want Slog 50Mb images for broadcast. The A7sii fits right in this bracket. The 120fps option also delivers beautiful images. Sony delivered what we asked for, a compact 4k Camera with a 35mm sensor made for traveling. Thank you Sony!!

Best bang for your buck!

Aug 2, 2017

The A7sii is definitely one of the best Cameras for the price on the market today! The low light capabilities are amazing. I did research for about a year before buying a new camera and I'm very happy that I got this camera. You can produce some beautiful images and video if you know how. One of the main deciding factors for me was the 120fps in 1080p. It has added significantly to my production value. I plan on keeping this camera around for a while!

Mean Piece of Machinery

Dec 14, 2015

With only a week of use I couldn't be more satisfied with all the features my new A7S II offers. Its full frame sensor not only allows me to take full advantage of my lenses, but it also delivers a fantastic range of colors to my files. Much better dynamic range than its predecessor with good detail in highlights and shadows. Light sensitivity is great for dimly lit shots. All in all a great piece of equipment for a decent price. Recommend it!

great small video camera

Dec 17, 2015

great futures packed in to this small camera. You all read about good features, so here are negatives; Don't expect miracles, it is a small camera with limitations. It will not a replacement for FS7. Codec good enough but only 8 bit Video record button is very very awkward... come on Sony this is a video camera.... Screen tilt is limited Heavy for its size Battery life very short, you will need 4 batteries for few hours of serious shooting.

If you can afford it buy it (I use it for filming).

Jan 11, 2017

This camera is incredible, low light, high light, incredible sharpness, 24 or 30 fps at 4k and 100 or 60 mbs, 60 to 120fps at 1080. 3 axis Image stabilization, customizable buttons and menus, opportunity to use a slew of cheap, incredible old lenses, great picture profiles including Cine 4, log 2 & 3. Even right out of the box, with no menu set up, this camera is incredible. All of this in a portable and light size, that i take everywhere.

Perfect for my needs

Dec 28, 2015

Too many features to discuss. Basically any bad reviews for this items are ridiculous. This camera will take care of your needs. The user interface was a bit different at first but really not that complicated after a day. Quality of video and photos are top notch. Battery life could be better with any item that takes batteries, no big deal for me to buy a few extra batteries for superb results. That's the least of my worries.

My favorite body yet

Mar 26, 2017

I do both video and stills so this camera was the best option for me. This camera is a beast at handling noise even though for stills I still prefer ISO 50 on everything. For all of those debating on this camera body or the a7rii, I would say probably best to go with the a7rii. I would of liked to have the higher res pics for prints. However, I am happy with the disk space I'm saving with shooting 12mp raw files.

Little Beast

Mar 11, 2016

I was saving up to buy a used A7S and somehow talked myself into the A7Sii. It came bundled with the Rode mic and Lexar SD card which are great things to have. I am really pleased with the quality of this camera body, it's solid, feels great in the hand and performs insanely well. I am so happy to have all the features and will likely have this camera for years to come. Thank you BH Photo for the great bundle!

Stellar!

Mar 22, 2016

The A7s II covers 9/10 bases. I use it for run and gun shoots, so I need to be mobile and fast moving. Because of the light footprint of the a7s II I can do this. Love the 4K, and the IS makes using an 85mm lens handheld a breeze! Of coarse the low light and S-Log kick butt as well! The only thing thats a drag is some of the features are buried in the menu and take a little bit of time to access on the fly.

Disappointed in low light performance despite the hype

Nov 1, 2015

What I like: Handles nicely, compact, great viewfinder and LCD, both of which are stellar in low light. What I don't like: Performance at moderate ISO e.g. 1000-6400K was no better than my Nikon D610. At ISO 25K there was perhaps a 2 stop improvement over the D610. Above about 32K there appeared a significant purple band of noise on the left side of the frame. Finally the battery life is atrocious.

Great camera

Oct 17, 2016

Really enjoying the camera. I Use it more to film and im very satified w the product. I have been using it for over 3 months and i can say that-buy extra batteries. Also, Ive noticed that when shooting moving objects say like from a car or train, the buildings or objects tilt. I have understood later that the camera processor isnt capable to adjust that. Anyway, also great to shoot with low light.

One great camera

Feb 16, 2017

I have been looking to upgrade from my Canon T3i (600D) for the past two years. This camera offered everything I was looking for. Its also arguably one of the best all around cameras at its price point. Solid build and a ton of reviews / tutorials online to get you started. There is a bit of a learning curve coming from Canon but after a week of shooting it feels pretty intuitive.

Never look in a mirror again

Dec 8, 2015

This is the best low-medium budget camera I have used by far. From the canon 5d and 6d, the Panasonic gh4, and the Nikon d40. The 4K 30p is great for downscaling and the color profiles with a little bit of tweaking shoot great flat color footage for post production color grading. On top of all this the camera is very easy to learn and the menus and button layouts are fantastic.

VIDEOGRAPHERS: This is the camera you need!

May 10, 2017

Videographers: THIS IS THE CAMERA YOU NEED. I spent hours, days, weeks searching for the right camera. There were so many biased options online that it made it really tricky to decide what camera was right for my needs. I made the switch from Canon to Sony and I am AMAZED by this camera. If you are a videographer in the dslr market, this is the camera you are looking for.

Great for what I do

Feb 2, 2016

I do real estate and other smaller type production videos and this camera works great so far. The in-camera stabilization works wonders when paired with my ronin. Walking up stairs, sidestepping, even running, smoothes out the footage to make it look like I'm gliding. Also a big perq is the 120fps recording at 1080. This is great for my surfing videos - 4X slo mo baby...
