4K footage is well worth the price

Nov 9, 2016

I use this mainly for weddings and small commercial shoots. The internal 4k is fantastic - I upgraded from an A7s where I had to use the Shogun to get 4k footage and sometimes its not practical with the battery life and the size to get in and out of tight spots. The footage from this is great - so much sharper when doing side by side comparisons with the older A7s. I have mixed feelings about the stabilizer. For stills, its fantastic. I've taken ... So far, so good

May 17, 2017

I got the Sony a7S II to up my video game. I've previously been shooting with Canon DSLRs, a variety of camcorders, GoPros and the like. I'm adapting my Canon EOS mount lenses and some manual lenses via both a Fotodiox smart adapter and the same company's ND Throttle. So far, I've been doing test footage to get used to the controls and how to expose footage via the different picture profiles. And how to grade the resulting video. Luckily, there a... Show More

very impressive, with a few issues

Jan 3, 2016

The video quality is amazing. I got this camera mostly to shoot in low light and for astro-timelapses as I use an fs700 with a Odyssey 7Q recorder as my workhorse, but with the slow motion and audio of the FS700 aside, the image quality of the A7sii is so good it would be hard to justify the bigger camera. Photos are very good as well. Here are the main problems I've run into. -Batter life sucks (well documented at this point) -It's very easy to ... Show More

Revolutionary

Only camera of its size and capabilities. I love the 4K and 1080 at all the frame rate. Things to take into mind when buying this camera: -It will overheat when recording 4K internally. Mine does around 40 mins. (Sony fixed this with the A7rII recently so hopefully it'll be fixed with this soon). Use an external recorder during long event recording for uninterrupted recording without overheating to combat this issue. -File naming sucks. Every tim... Show More

True performer

Oct 29, 2015

Coming from the original A7s, this updated version has been on my radar before it even got announced. I already purchased the A7RII and was impressed with the 4K quality in S35. But the FF 4K footage was disappointing, especially when turning up the iso. In terms of noise, the 4K footage from RII (S35) and SII is comparable up to about ISO 12.800. The A7SII is what I was hoping for with the addition of Slog3. I can see a slightly improved iso per... Show More

Great Camera, but...

Great Camera. Would have been nice to have10 bit 422 out of HDMI. I used the two A7SIIs i purchased with the metabones to canon ef mount. Terrible! I really, really wanted this to work. BH was very helpful in trying to get me an adapter that worked but couldn't. BH was great but the metabones was not! I had aperture control half the time i used it. I had two productions shoots with these cameras and both time i had to revert back to my Canon 5D3s... Show More

Great upgrade from a7s.

Jun 2, 2016

I owned the a7s and loved it for the last year. I didn't really think it was possible to change things enough to make it work it. Then I got the a7sii. First off, the build is a night and day difference and the camera finally doesn't feel like a toy. It truly feels like a well built camera. The extra addition of a new custom function button is awesome and allows even more flexibility in what is routed to the button. Also, you can route the record... Show More

Perfect Companion to my FS5!

Mar 8, 2017

I had heard amazing reviews prior to purchasing my a7sii. Especially in the low light situations. This little guy is a perfect companion for my Sony FS5. Fantastic for movement shots via gimbal, as well as run and gun b-roll the steadyshot is money! Because I use this as my #2, I'm not concerned with the battery life so much. The little ones can be a slight pain because I'm used to my larger Sony batteries for my FS5. But I also have a portable u... Show More

So I am not sure what I can write here that has not been covered by the many full length reviews about this camera. We use it exclusively as a video camera and so far we have not been disappointed. The image is amazing in both 4k and 1080. The low light is as good as they claim. The areas where this camera struggle are: battery life as the batteries are tiny...if you are used to GH4 run times you will be in for a shock. The 29 minute runtime for ... Show More

Love It for Video

Jan 18, 2016

Coming from a Canon 5D mk III this is so much better for video. The internal 4K is wonderful, the image quality is great (even at 8 bit), and having 1080p at 60fps for slow motion is a nice option to have (I don't use the 120fps since it's cropped). It's also nice to have S-Log options for color grading. The gamma assist is nice, but it would be even better if we could load our own LUTs on the camera. The menus are a little difficult, but I spent... Show More

Great camera (Best for video use)

Apr 20, 2016

It's a great camera. I bought it as an upgrade of the A7s. Is it worth it? For me, yes: internal 4k video and IBIS (that's a really nice feature indeed). The rest it's the same. Rolling shutter too... Or maybe worse? With my Rokinon Cine 85mm it's ridiculously unbearable, you really can't do fast pans. But at least I can shoot hand-held with a 85mm unstabilized (thanks to IBIS). That's life, nothing it's perfect. So, you can't go wrong with this ... Show More

Two Words For Sony: Amp Glow

This camera produces a beautiful image and the Full Frame aesthetic is quite superb. However if this is advertised as a low light camera why is there amp glow? The amp glow appears on most cameras on the left side of the image at approx. 12,800 ISO in movie mode. This mode is optimized for movies however with the strong color noise apparent in the image is and can be very distracting. I really would like to see Sony admit this as an issue and fix... Excellent Camera, Positive Buying Experience

Very happy & excited about our purchase of the A7S II. This mirrorless camera fit our company's baseline budget constraints while still serving as a high quality camera we can use for a variety of corporate video shoots on a consistent basis. The low light performance that the A7S II provides is a huge factor for us as we often need to shoot in locations where we do not have the ability to control lighting as well as we'd like. Nov 11, 2016

I've loved this camera so much I own two of them. The low light way better than the RED and other top end cinema cameras on the market. I love the 30min shooting time and 120fps rates. If I had to criticize something: I'm not a fan of the cropping it does when shooting 120fps, and the camera physical build doesn't feel and strong and weather proof as the Canons. Even the buttons don't seem to respond as well as Canon equipment. I have had times w... Show More

Apr 4, 2016

The camera is really great in low light as advertised. The trade-off is the 12 meg/pix which makes crop mode almost useless for photography. (it is about 5 megs). My other large complaint is that the auto white balance is really bad with florescent and LED home lighting. You really need to white balance manually with those lights. The dead silent mode is great in situations where you need that. I just wish that there was a better indicator tellin... Show More
