The best bang for buck on the market - a video perspective.

Apr 28, 2017

This camera is an extremely powerful tool for shooting gorgeous, gradable, professional videos. While all of the bells & whistles of this camera are great it's important to keep in perspective what kind of content will be created using this tool. I work at the Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning at Western Kentucky University where we produce a number of different types of video content. From Video Cams to DSL Mirrorless Cams

Jul 30, 2018

I know, most people go the other way, but I researched and hoped for a year that a better video camera would come out near this price level. Of course, there is nothing that does 400 mb/s 4K in 4:2:2, 10 bit for under $2K WITH Hybrid or Vlog Log gamma and variable frame rates - in this quality range. I have been using Canon HDV, Sony EX-3's and Panasonic TM series cams for a wide variety of private and corporate projects for years and wanted... Show More

Panasonic GH5 A Winner Sight Unseen

Dec 7, 2016

I know it's a little pre-emptive to write a review for a camera that has not yet been released but for me, I can already rate the GH5 5 star and I will tell you why. I'm a full time content creator with a video focus and I own 2 x GH3 and a GH4 camera systems. For anyone wondering about the Panasonic GH5, I wanted to fill in this blank space here on my all time fav store and let you all know that even sight un-seen, I know this camera is going to... I have had the GH5 for over 5 months now. I use this camera for my sports videography job and for short film use. Feel free to view some videos I have made with the camera with this link (most often filmed using the metabones XL with the canon 24-105 mk i). https://abmuell.myportfolio.com/portfolio COLOR: The 10bit color really makes a difference in many of my images compared to my co-workers who have opted for the Sony route. Everything you read about focus issues is true

May 26, 2017

I own a production company and approve all purchases, so when some of the up and coming team here requested this camera we bought it. But despite all of the great resolution features, if you can't rely on video manual or auto focus, then it's pointless, as it's really the one thing you can't fix in post. This review is based on this camera, paired with the 12-35 ii Panasonic Lumix lens. First, autofocus. We use all Red manual focus cameras here, ... Show More

The perfect mirrorless camera for video

Apr 27, 2018

Since DSLRs and other large sensor cameras have been used for video, I've always loved the look they create, but hated the process of getting there, until now. I spent years working in broadcast TV, so a small camera that has no XLR audio inputs, no ND filters, is challenging to focus accurately and hold steady has been frustrating, but I dealt with it to get the look that my productions demand. I jumped ship from Canon DSLRs to Sony a few years... Show More

Overall good camera poor but noisy indoor.

Oct 6, 2017

I have switched to GH5 from Sony FS5. Before i worked on Canon 5D Mark 3, Sony EX3, Canon C300, C300 MK2 and many other Sony DV cameras. I think GH5 is very good considering it's price. I am using it with Sigma 18-35 1.8 & Sigma 50-100 1.8 and Metabones Speedbooster Ultra; for a couple days i've had Panasonic 25mm F1.7 and i've been using it for photos. Overall i am happy with the camera performance for its price. I shoot mainly corporate videos ... Show More

Great camera, but could use improvements

Jul 23, 2018

So far, this camera has done a good job in meeting my expectations. It's definitely not a low-light device and does not like situations that require a very high dynamic range. However, the colors and the overall quality of the footage is fantastic. I did not come to the GH5 from the GH4. Instead, I used Sony and Canon. IMO, the menu on Panasonic could be better. It still takes me a while to locate certain menu items. I usually have to a... Show More

I got a lemon

May 18, 2017

It takes good enough pics, but it's sketchy in terms of working and not working. It's bells and whistles, such as focus peaking, works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't, whether it's turned on or not. I'm returning it and the lenses I bought with it. All of which reset the camera settings, when I change lenses. All the lenses were native, Lumix 12-140mm f3.5-5.6, 12-35mm f2.8, 35-100mm f2.8. Also, both the MP4 & MOV. files shot in 4K do not open... Show More

A GREAT UPGRADE

May 30, 2017

I have been using a GH4 to fill in a third point of view between a pair of DVX200's. With the upgrade to a GH5 I now have a waveform monitor. Also I am getting familiar with the multiple focal plan feature of the DVX200 and was thrilled to see it on the GH5. If the GH5 is lacking, it is in having built in ND filtering. But that is easily overcome with a Variable ND Filter. If you plan on shooting shallow depth of field outdoors it is an essential... Show More

Fantastic value - versatile hybrid camera that delivers!

Nov 18, 2017

Fantastic, versatile, small, and lightweight camera that punches way above its weight class. Can easily replace a dedicated video camera for many scenarios/use cases if you combine it with the DMW-XLR1 mic adapter, a good variable ND filter, and the right lenses. Great for sliders, jibs, and gimbals and for traveling light. A truly great hybrid photo/video solution. I use the GH5 primarily for corporate and training videos, outdoor event videos, ... I preordered this camera based on what I now realize was marketing hype from select reviewers and panasonic employees who didn't show the autofocus but assured me (personally) it was super fast and reliable and the only reason they couldn't show us was because it was pre-production firmware. Not exactly magic for stills photographer

May 26, 2017

Used a GH4 for 3 years and looked forward to its successor. Well, not exactly magic for me. GLASS HALF-EMPTY 1. For high-ISO low-light noise, still (RAW) and FHD-8bit-100M-60p video seem only one stop better than GH4. 4K-8bit-100M-30p video seems two stops better than GH4. Shoot your own controlled samples and then judge. 2. IBIS with Panasonic 12-35/35-100 O.I.S. (Mark I, Dual IS) are marginally less shaky for video. Any still photographer expec... Show More

I have been using the GH5 for over a year. I have not used my Canon or Nikon DSLRs since I got comfortable with the camera. Professionals with specific needs still benefit from full frame platforms, but for enthusiasts the GH5 is the swiss knife of photography.
