WD 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive

Excellent ext drive with security
WD drives have worked well for me in the past, and after about a month, this model is performing well. The additional security feature is a big plus.

Too slow
With only 1 USB port and no other type of connection, it took nearly 6 days to backup 5 TB. I wish they would have put day an "on light" so that you can tell unit is powered up.

Excellent external hard drive - easy to set up
great - my windows 10 system recognized it immediately - lots of storage - highly recommended

It works.
It does the job but I miss the blinking light that shows when the drive is transferring data.

Stopped working after 4 months
I can no longer access my files, and everytime I try it freezes my computer and I have to restart. Horrible purchase

Great Drive
Very quiet. Very fast. If you're going to reformat to APFS, which I did, I suggest finding instructions online first. After I did that, I had zero problems. As always, B&H has great prices and fast shipping.

Works Fine but Start-up Was Problematic
After installing this external drive I downloaded Acronis True Image WD Edition software from WD's website. After imaging my computer's HD Acronis shut my computer. When I tried rebooting my computer got stuck. I called WD tech support and used it on another computer with them to determine that the imaging worked. The tech rep formatted a very large free partition for me to use for backups. And I could get this WD HD to work on my main computer (... Show More

DOA ....
WD generally makes pretty reliable HDs. This newer My Book looks ok (except for no activity/power light) but it never made it past USB recognition. I tried it on 2 PCs and one Mac including switching out cables. Kudos to B&H for easy and prompt return.

Works well, no complaints
I use 2 of these hard drives to make bootable clones of my MacBook and iMac. So far so good. Time will tell.

GOOD SIZE FOR MY NEEDS
FIRST HARD DRIVE CAME AND SOUNDED LIKE COFFEE GRINDER. RETURNED PROMPTLY TO B&H. THEY REPLACED IT AND SECOND ONE FORMATTED AND TESTED GOOD RIGHT AWAY.

Reliable
I keep buying these hard drives because they last and don't fail. I use these hard drives to store photos on. I have six that I'm continually rotating and updating. I keep three in a safe deposit box at the bank incase of fire or theft at home. My house was broken into and most of my hard drives were taken and I lost many photos. A Mac technician told me that to not use more than a 2 TB external hard drive that the computer wouldn't handle it . but 3 or 4 tb work just fine. Very reliable these hard drives other brands don't last.

Garbage
Doesn't work well with my brand new Mac. After 14 hours, it's only 7% done. Contacted WD. They sent a replacement. My computer can't even recognize the replacement. I ran diagnostics. Nothing is wrong with my computer. These are poorly made.

Works as expected
I am using for 2nd copy of backup images and the drive is only online during data transfers. Arrives with drive formatted as exFAT. If using only with Windows, drive should be reformatted as NTFS to improve performance. I did this using Windows Disk Management (Computer/Manage/Disk Management) rather than bother with a WD utility. Drive does make more noise than older smaller capacity WD My Books but not as much as my computer's fan. It does not ... Show More

Excellent
Easy to use and a one-time cost. I used another brand and found out you need an annual subscription after I bought it. A great feature is that you can back-up files exactly as they are.

Great
Fast and reliable. In the remote chance that their drive fails the warranty from Western Digital is superb. Always use more than one backup drive.

Beware of drive limitations
The drive performance is as expected, even if a bit louder than I'm used to. It never occurred to me, however, that an external hard drive would lack a power switch like this one does. Lacking a power switch means the drive can wake up at inopportune moments, such as when the operating system for some reason decides to probe all the drives. When it does so, whatever application you are using can grind to a halt until the drive finishes waking up some seconds later. Because I use the drive only for backups, this is quite annoying.

Does its job
I use this drive to back up my images, therefore it is a drive that I use once in a while, only when I have new images. It is working just as it should. It seems reliable so far. I am satisfied.

noise level is beyond tolerate level .
the clicking noise of disc spinning is so annoying and it's so loud. it's constant spinning. please help. I bought this for less than 10 months .

I will buy again.
I have 20 WD external drives, including about 12 Desktop. Most are full and are archiving/storing information. It was easy to print the contents of each in order to recall information. So far, so good regarding reliability.

Good product.
Great price for the drives. Work well, no issue with the 2 I got even months later. Decent speeds.

WD Hard Drive running quietly, with no drama
My 3 TB WD USB 3.0 external HD is attached to my new iMac running High Sierra. Having owned a similar 2 TB Firewire WD HD for years, I expected no trouble and have not been disappointed. The drive is behaving as it should, quietly, with no drama. Since I use CCC backup software vs the backup software that comes with the drive, I simply re-formatted it after arrival with Disk Utility. It is now in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, divided into p... Show More

Bad product, 1/4 speed of previous generation?
40 hours to transfer 4 TB? Compared to my earlier generation, WD 8TB external? And an audible hummmmm sound? No activity light? Nothing to like. I was able to location new copies of the older design, and bought those. This half-half split design is a turn in the wrong direction, for the 3 reasons up top here... I returned it as soon as the old-generation replacement arrived, then ordered 2 more of the older style!

I'd buy it again
Excellent product and this new one is surprisingly silent! I'm using it as my Back Up Drive ( I already have three WD My Book HDs with different capacities )

I would not buy WD external drives again.
Love Western Digital My Books and backup software; WD Smartware. I bought another 8 TB My Book for backup and wanted to take my old 8 TB My Book Duo offsite in case of a fire. Turns out the new 8 TB MY Book is not compatible with WD Smartware! And the new WD software that it is compatible with doesn't do automatic backup every time you modify a file. I would not buy WD external drives again.
