WD 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive

Bad product after years of being good
I had WD 6TB external for years, and currently have 4 of WD 6TB and 1 of WD 8TB - older versions. This new 8TB is without an activity light, and it produces a constant hum vibration which can be felt through the walls too, even though it doesn't touch the wall itself. It's not loud unless it's quiet in the room and it is at 4ft height. At 2ft height and hidden I don't hear it. The transfer speed is 1/2 of what it is on my old drives. 5TB transfer... Show More

I will wait to see if I will buy one again?
There is NO led to tell you when the drive is active, but it is LOUD when it is working. I have not put anything on it as yet and it sound like every 10-15 sec. the drive is active. I hope it well last?

Great Hard Drive
I have been using a My Book 8TB External Hard Drive for the past two years now and it works great, the only negative would be that it takes a few seconds for it to wake-up after a long period of time (over an hour). But really, a few seconds, maybe 15 to 20 seconds. I have lost no data, have been able to use as a portable device between my desktop and either of two laptops when traveling or exhibiting at conferences. I use a large amount of stora... Show More

1 of 2 Dead in 10 Days
I bought two. One died in 10 days. Still within the RMA timeframe, thank god. Let's hope the replacement lasts a lot longer. Not that I dropped mine, but have read reviews on these drives, not the physical drive, but the drive and enclosure, if dropped, even from like 1-2 feet onto the carpet will kill the drive. So i would highly recommend that these drives are stored on their side or somewhere where the HDD and its Enclosure would not drop or f... Show More

Failed within 3 months
Had started loading on overflow as a backup and within 3 months failed completely. Crashing my computer on boot and disk utility. Took it to hard drive recovery (If you're in the Philly area I recommend tri state data recovery, don pulls off miracles) said it failed due to bad sectors. This is probable the 3rd western digital drive I've had fail on me over the years.

Works as advertised but no drive activity LED
I formatted with ext4 to use with Linux and mirrored my 4 TB drive. Everything works as expected. I knocked off one star because there is no LED to indicate drive activity. Come on-how cheap can you get? I suppose this a new trend that we will have shoved on us.

It happens, a dud, but I look forward to the replacement
Drive did not work after arriving. It did not show in Windows 10 as a usable drive. In Disk Management, it showed as an unallocated drive and unitialized (No partition system (MBR/GPT) and no File System (exFAT)). I tried to initialize it with GPT but it failed. WD Drive Utilities status check failed. Spoke to WD tech. support and they agreed that drive was bad. Sent drive back to WD for replacement.

nice
these are much better than the 2tb drive they put out, the ones that were bus powered. anything over 1tb had better have external power supply

Probably not. Probably should check out Carbonite.
Do not like the fact that you cannot connect this drive without plugging it in and then unplugging it when you turn the computer off. Without doing this your desktop will not boot.

OK
For the price, it's great, I guess. The only negative thing is it goes to sleep so often and takes time to wake up.

Definitely recommend
I love WD hard drives! Simply plug it in and you're good to go. As a video producer, I'm amassing quite a collection of hard drives. I love the 4TB capacity of this drive because it holds a ton of files.

Definitely a good purchase!
I'd rate this drive a 5 except that it does not appear to have a light to indicate it is operating. Other than that, the drive seems to be an excellent back-up solution. The power module is small, and the drive is nearly silent. One thing to keep in mind however is that while you are backing up a drive over its USB 3.0 connection, all other USB devices will slow to a crawl.

I would recommend this item.
I love this. I use it for everything and I love that it can be used by both windows and mac.

Recommend for large external storage needs.
I bought two of these. One for general backup for my iMac and other file storage. The other for backup storage for images. It was easy to set up, even on the Mac, and functions as described. I transferred many files and transfer was smooth and fast.

I am very happy with this drive
I put off buying an external hard drive for a long time. Now that I have finally bought one I am very happy. Set up was extremely fast. The unit is almost silent and does not take up much space on my crowded desk. This drive will be used to store all the images from my photography business.

Excellent and a large place to store photos.
I am a professional photographer and use external hard drives for backing up photos and this one will back up my back up. I have 3 that no longer work.

Pretty good. It works well.
This serves as a desktop expansion and replaces a failing Seagate 3TB. Since I use it for everyday storage and frequently generate files larger than 4GB the first thing I did was to reformat to NTFS and re-partition the drive. In my experience the preloaded back-up and drive tools should given ye olde heave-ho straight away. Don't bother with them as they are given minimal resource development by the vendor and rarely updated. Gaping security hol... Show More

No activity light!
It's a typical WD My Book, except in a cheap move they've eliminated the activity light. You don't know how handy that little light was until it's gone, you get no confirmation of the drive operating. AND, they don't tell you before you buy it. WD has the worst web site on Earth, as far as disingenuous advertising. You simply cannot discern the differences in the products, which is often just the styling of the case. If you call you get absolutely clueless kids reading off of canned blurbs. A very annoying dense corporate layer of advertising fudge, it's too bad, the devices are fine.

How I use the 8TB WD drive
I use this particular WD drive as a hot backup of all my system's application programs and associated data files. I set it up to automatically backup any changes I make on an hourly basis. Just remember to switch the default sleep mode of 30 minutes, which is how the drive ships, to OFF when you first install this drive on your computer. Setup by the way took less than two minutes. I've found from several years of use that WD drives are highly re... Show More

Great product from a great store
Plugged the hard drive into my PS4 when I filled the internal drive. Plenty of space and great transfer speeds means I should be covered until the next generation of consoles comes out. B&H was a pleasure to do business with- I will definitely be back.

So far, so good.
I have a number of these drives. The new iteration doesn't have an activity light which is too bad. It also makes some muffled sounds when operating. Other than that it is operating as intended thus far.

Good product !!!!
I have been working with WD products for 7 years and never had an issue so far, I added my 8 TB recently and is doing a good job overral, I noticed a noise that the 3 and 4 TB's don't have I guess is normal in this unit, I also noticed is a bit slower when transferring large amounts of data. I am using my 8TB as a back up unit for all my data. I have 12 3 TB of data that I would like to consolidate into larger drives and the 8TB unit is a start. I will buy more of them soon.

Good Capacity
I bought two and they are as fast as external usb 3.0 usually are. The disc is slow to build up to operating speed. Since I turn off my pc at night, I have to start the drives 15 to 20 seconds before I boot up my win 7 pc. If they last more than a couple of years, I will up my ratting to five stars.
