Good performaer, fun lens

Jun 3, 2015

This lens is a solid performer and it's deficiencies are easily overcome. Good imaging performance and a creative wide angle of view make this lens enjoyable to use. It is full manual, which actually is fun for a change, and also shows quite some vignetting in the corners, but this is easily correct for in Lightroom. One additonal point I hadn't considered, but should have is the inability to use filters given the convex front element. I understa... Show More

Bang for the Bucks!!!

Dec 13, 2015

I caught this baby on sale during Black Friday and it's worth every penny. I'm very happy with how sharp my copy is and please make sure you a comfortable with shooting manually. I believe many people are attracted to the price and how wide this is, but not equipped with the practice to shoot manual. That is one reason why someone would give this lens a low rating. You have to be willing to learn if you're coming from straight autofocus (AF) ever... Show More

Value for the Price

Dec 12, 2016

I did a review earlier but for some reason it did not get posted. Recently bought my first full frame camera after using crop angle for years. Wanted a fast lens for night time / astrophotography / low light lens to go with it. Purchased after reading the reviews and a good deal from B&H. Tried it at Golden Gate Bridge (below is the photo). 100 ISO, 1.3, at 2.8. It is excellent for low light. A little soft but good at this price. If you need a ul... Show More

Good wide angle lens for the price

Jan 28, 2013

This is a great wide angle lens for the price, especially considering how hard it is yo find a cheap wide angle for the canon EF mount. With a max aperture of 2.8, it is ideal for low light situations. It does not have auto focus, which was not particularly an issue in my case as i was using it for video. My main complaint about this lens was that it distorts on the edge of the picture frame like a fisheye lens would. It's a subtle distortion, bu... Show More

great lens if you get a good sample

Dec 11, 2016

Saw many photos online taken with these lenses plus some glowing tests by the lens tests sites, and it made me want to get one. I also read about poor quality control, and had first hand experience with that as well. I had to try 3 lenses before I found a really good one. first one was unusable, second one was just OK. third one was fantastic. A good sample of this lens compares to Nikon and Canon lenses costing 5X as much, and is sharp wide open... Show More

Pretty Good Ultrawide

Dec 29, 2015

This lens is extremely sharp at f4 and up. This is my first ultra wide and I particularly bought it for landscape work. No complains in regards to sharpness on a 5Dsr, but the distortion can get pretty severe on certain shots. I would not recommend this for group portraiture unless you really know how to control the distortion. Using a lens profile (not included) in Adobe CC helps. Also focusing is a challenge looking through the viewfinder; much... Show More

Great for Astrophotography

Jul 10, 2018

I used this lens for astro-photography and wide landscape shots. I compared it side-by-side to Canon's 14mm L series lens. Honestly, this Rokinon is sharper and has much less chromatic aberrations. The only downside to this lens, unlike the Canon, is its relatively intense distortion. (This is why you pay $2000 for the Canon) This will be noticeable when shooting horizontal landscape lines and cannot be fully corrected. But if you're plannin... Show More

But I like the results, if you focus good you get nice clean pictures.I wish i have FX body to use whole potential for wide angle, but at least pictures are super sharp on my body.Focus ring is realy slow, so i would not recomendet it for some weddings or portrait shooting, but for landc... Put the Rokinon 14mm F2.8 with AE Chip on my Nikon D850. Having the AE chip certainly helps focusing. I compared the Rokinon with my 16 year old Nikon 17-35mm AF-S lens. Took the same shot at the same exposure. Not surprisingly the Rokinon is not as sharp as the Nikon, but it is sharp enough for what I want it for - taking pictures of large murals and interior rooms. One surprising discovery, the chromatic aberration was less noticeable in the Ro... Show More

Perfect lens, if it is NOT defective

Apr 15, 2012

Well, I was pretty amazed how sharp this $ lens is. I was not expecting much, but it is incredibly sharp at f/8! The CA is well controlled and it can easily be removed in Photoshop for no CA at all. The construction is great, feel solid in hand and the focus ring is extremely smooth. Tne only problem is that my copy had an issue. One of the glass element was de-centered and created a tilt shift like effect. The left corners were as sharp as cente... Show More

Ultra Wide and Ultra Affordable

Oct 14, 2013

I've used this lens quite a bit since I got it and I really like it. I've been shooting mostly architectural and landscapes with it and I like the sharpness plus I don't mind the manual focus or the missing exif data and so far I only have a couple minor issues. 1) the front bulb is a little hard to keep clean so I now have lens wipes and lens spray in my bag. 2) There is allot of distortion and chromatic aberrations, not a huge issue, but if you... Decent lens for the price, but has limitations

Dec 18, 2016

By giving up the auto focus capabilities, this lens provides ultrawide angle at a very significant cost savings. At such wide angles, one can argue that autofocus is perhaps not all that necessary, and I would agree with that sentiment, so the lack of autofocus is not the limitation of this camera. Rather, in my view, the true limitation of the camera is how soft the images it produces, particularly along the edges, heck, anywhere except the cent... Show More

Good images at a reasonable price

Jun 23, 2016

This lens is lots of fun at a very good price. The Canon AE version allows you to use focus confirmation indicator/beep. Aperture is set in the camera like other Canon lenses; it does not have an aperture ring, contrary to the web photo, Center is sharp even wide open, Corners are less sharp, but pretty sharp when stopped down. It's very easy to focus using live view with 10x magnification. You may think you have enough dof that it doesn't matter... Show More

The Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 at this price point is hard to beat. It's manual of course (oh what did we do before auto focus? This is sarcasm). The lens is plastic but well built with a smooth click less focus ring. It's moderate weight is not substantial, but attached to a Canon 5D Mark iii, it's well balanced. Focus is sharp from 2.8 on up with minimal fall off at higher stops. Overall sharp lens for exploring a more creative view. I use it for Milky... Show More

Hidden gem

Perfect lens for landscapes/night sky photography. This lens makes super sharp pictures, but keep in mind this is a MANUAL focus. The confirm chip however is there to guide you to achieve perfect focus in addition to the focus ring that is huge and easily maneuverable. The lens produces noticeable mustache distortion but this is easily fixable using Lightroom lens presets. Also not forget it does give 115 view on a full-frame (35mm) but only arou... Show More

Good Lens For The Money

May 15, 2014

There was a gap in my lens arsenal I needed to fill, & I could not afford to pay over $ for a Canon 14mm 2.8. Even used on ebay lenses approaching that quality were 3 or 4 times the price of this lens (& not in great condition either), so it was a no-brainer. I did a shoot with it and I have to disagree with Sam Rockwell's review: it in fact IS a very useful lens to have in the bag. I would like to have the focus confirmation chip as in the Nikon version, but it is what it is. If I somehow come across a better 14mm down the road I have no doubt it will hold most of it's value should I sell it.

Very Sharp!

Nov 15, 2012

This is an awesome ultra wide angle lens. I couldn't afford the Canon 14mm 2.8 II so I picked this up instead, after reading that it is a really great lens. It's very sharp from corner to corner. It also solid, has a very nice build quality. I dont mind the manual focus so muc because I mostly have it on a tripod with live view at 10x. I think the only con is the whisker like distortion. If you take pictures of objects that have horizontal lines, they get distorted. But this is easily correctable in lightroom and photoshop. I'd highly recommend this lens to anyone wanting an ultra wide angle.

Very sharp, very wide angle of view

Mar 13, 2017

I've been laboring between getting this lens or Tamron's 15-30 for my D750. With this lens I'll shoot interior real estate shots for publication in the MLS. I took it out the day after I got it to shoot a small condo and this lens did a great job. The images were very clear and sharp with consistency from corner to corner. With a lens this wide, you're going to have lens distortion shooting in close spaces so that's something to think about. My last lens/camera set up was a D300s coupled with a Nikon 10-24mm DX. This lens produces better images than that combo. Worth it at twice the price.

Excellent product

Dec 16, 2015

It is a great lens! Super wide with some distortion, but it is expected with the focal length, and considering this it is not bad at all. Good use for this lens would be landscapes and real estate pictures, also timelapses and of course video. The manual focus can be tricky at times, but I believe that I just need a bit more time to get used to it. The lens feels solid and sturdy and the focus ring is super smooth. The lens itself isn't as big as I've expected it to be, so it's always a plus. Overall I consider it a very good and thrifty buy and I look forward to using it in the future.

Fantastic Value!

Jul 10, 2014

I purchased this lens specifically for night photography, as it is fast and wide enough to capture landscapes including the Milky Way. The lens handled beautifully, and to my surprise showed very little distortion, if any at all. I decided to include the sunrise to blend into my Milky Way image, and what really impressed me was with just minimal blending in post-processing, this lens captured the scene very accurately, with excellent sharpness and color rendition. The reason this impressed me so much is due to this lens not being able to accept filters, but still get the job done.

third time is the charm

Sep 17, 2014

I do photography as a active hobby and use this lens on a Nikon D600 and D7000. This is the third one of these lenses I have tried, the first two were from a different vender and had off center focus points and bright spots. The other two lens had coma on one side and were soft along one edge or the other. This lens from B&H, how ever is right on the money. I have used it for photographing the milky way and the stars are almost pin point right out to the edges. Focus is a bit of a challenge, so I use life view for critical focus and f/8 hyper focal point for general shooting.

Nice lens for astrophotography widefield

Sep 22, 2014

I use this lens for the main purpose of taking widefield milky way shots of the sky at night. The results turned out great! It's a manual lens, so you have to adjust f stop and focus on your own, which isnt too big of a deal and shouldnt be for any dslr user, though i guess have the option to have auto would have been nice. Heres some tips for shooting the sky. f/2.8, set focus to infinity, exposure 20s to 30s, ISO 800-6400, though i generally use 3200 from my location. For the price, this lens cant be beat. It feels well made, heavy, and the pictures speak for themselves.

Excellent value

Mar 6, 2017

Just received this lens and took some test shots using a Canon 6D -- results so far are very good, which I expected since I rented this lens (without the AE chip) before buying. A pleasant surprise was that the AE chip, in addition to providing focus confirm, allows the camera body to control the aperture setting -- the manual aperture setting ring on the lens as shown in the photos is not present on the AE chip model. Also, the AE chip model sets the EXIF Focal Length and Lens tags to 14 mm and 14mm, respectively. (The non-AE chip model I rented did not set these tags.)
