Seagate 6TB Backup Plus USB 3.0 External Hard Drive with USB Hub

Great Drive for Backups
Used this on my new computer for backups. Easy to connect and use. Backups are inherently slow so write speed is of little consequence for my application. I copied the backup to a second hard drive connected via one of the USB 3.1 ports on this drive. Easy as dragging the file from one folder to the other. 180 GB backup file copied to second drive in about 90 minutes. I was surprised it copied that quickly because of my experience with an older... Surprising Slow Performance
While I usually have good luck with Seagate products, this one is a disappointment. The unit was slow. One bulk transfers I could hear constant hard drive noise and the transfer rate rarely went over 70 Mb/s. Other USB 3 drives handle bulk transfers at speeds over 170 Mb/s. This one was returned as defective and I went with a competing brand (with much better speeds).

Solid Product
Seagate has a well deserved reputation when it comes to hard drives, and this unit falls right in line. I have three of these to back up an extensive set of photos and movies. Great product.

Unpredictable At Up First Time
Well I have two MAC computers. A laptop which is High Sierra and a desktop which is El Capitan. On the El Capitan the disk first wouldn't mount, but the software automatically loaded (even though it was for a PC) So I plugged it into my laptop where is showed up, but ope having errors reformatting in MAC Os, even though it was suppose to be MAC ready. I was on the phone with Apple Care for over an hour and then they said to try calling Seagate. I... Show More

8TB Drive Plus two USB Ports
The drive was delivered quickly and in good shape. Connected it to my system, plugged it in, and started backing up my smaller 2TB drives. It was as simple as that!

Good storage great price
It's nice that it doesn't have a separate power switch, just plug it in to turn it on. I keep past project video files on it. Good storage for a great price.

Not bad actually
While it's not the fastest drive on the market, it seems to be pretty reliable as a backup/storage drive. I find that when trying to edit 4K video on a drive like this, it can slow down the process when comes to rendering effects, etc. But overall it seems to be performing quite well for me as a storage drive. I think one key factor to extending the life of this hard drive is to not keep it connected to your computer continuously when not in use. Also, not keeping it plug to a power source when not in use helps.

Unexpected issues
Issue #1: I have been able to format Seagate 0.5 TB, WD 2 TB, and WD 3TB drives to exFAT so they work directly with my Windows and Mac computers. Not so with this Seagate 8 TB. Formatting to exFAT causes this drive to be unrecognizable by Mac. I had to format back to NTSF and install the Paragon driver. Issue #2: Mac - Seagate 8 TB - Seagate 2 TB works just fine. The Seagate 8 TB is acting as a USB hub, and both drives are usable. Mac... Show More

Junk
I bought 2 of these. One has failed and is currently sitting at a data recovery company to get the FCPX projects off of it.. Although we always back up footage the actual projects / libraries were on this drive. We will be out around $1000 to get our data back. Plus we have to take parts from the other one to use to get the data off of the first one. The recovery company said they see a lot os Seagate drives..Save yourself from the hassle that these drives will cost you.

Great bargin.
We got this in the "Deal Zone" for a great price. Ran out of room on a couple of 1tb secondary drives so we got this. Transfer of each 1tb drive was relatively quick. We have it connected to our RAID drive for "easier" access. Works well so far.

Very useful & reliable & after much searching cheapest 8TB
Very useful & reliable & after much searching cheapest 8TB I found. Very useful with extra USB sockets-saves having to transfer things through computer & so is much faster, also less ware & tear on computer-all controlled & viewed through USB cable plugged into computer.

LOVE THIS DRIVE!
I own two of these for photo backups. They are fast and reliable. I love them. I switched to Seagate three years ago from Western Digital, after multiple WD drive failures. I have never had a seagate drive failure.

Nice HDD, fast, but very noisy. I have a 3TB Seagate and they do not compare in terms of noise.

Excellent product
We now have two of these Backup Plus hubs in our home environment as backups to our two main workstations. Backups are VERY fast, simple to set up and manage, and after a few weeks, I can say very reliable. File or data recovery is simple drag and drop. The USB 3.0 ports on the front also simplify connections and provide those extra ports so we don't need to sneak around behind the hardware. I like it! Good work, Seagate!

Don't even try re-formatting this thing
This is my second shot at this device. I returned the first one after the drive became totally un-mountable after attempting to re-format the drive from its native NTFS to the more efficient AFS for my Mac. Using Disk Utility has never failed me in this task ever on any other drive. This one however, no success. Multiple attempts, two different units. Just to make sure I didn't do something wrong, I verified the steps I took with Seagate's instru... Show More

Best price per TB right now
We use a lot of these drives, mostly for backup and editing HD video. USB is too slow when editing 4K, but until the price comes down on Thunderbolt 3 drives, these remain an attractive alternative.
