Seagate 10TB Backup Plus USB 3.0 External Hard Drive with USB Hub

Great Drive for Backups
Used this on my new computer for backups. Easy to connect and use. Backups are inherently slow so write speed is of little consequence for my application. I copied the backup to a second hard drive connected via one of the USB 3.1 ports on this drive. Easy as dragging the file from one folder to the other. 180 GB backup file copied to second drive in about 90 minutes. I was surprised it copied that quickly because of my experience with an older... Like drive but 2-Month Adobe Membership did not work
This is the second of the Backup Plus Hub drives that I have purchased. the first 6GB version has worked well for years. The new 10GB one seems to be working well once I got it properly to support Mac OS's Time Machine. Note the quick start instructions should not be followed if you want to format this drive for use with Time Machine! Seagate should mention this in their quick start guide, however the information on how to properly format you... Show More

Good solid backup option
Seems like a good solid drive. Starts on boot-up so no on/off switch which is really redundant anyway. Comes formatted for Windows and Boot Camp and you can configure it to do Time Machine backup on installation or of course you can reformat it for Mac, but that removes the Boot Camp ability so you will not be able to start up in windows from the drive. Since I'm Mac only I reformatted it into two equal 4 gig partitions and use one for Time Machi... Show More

Unpredictable At Up First Time
Well I have two MAC computers. A laptop which is High Sierra and a desktop which is El Capitan. On the El Capitan the disk first wouldn't mount, but the software automatically loaded (even though it was for a PC) So I plugged it into my laptop where is showed up, but ope having errors reformatting in MAC Os, even though it was suppose to be MAC ready. Copying files between 1.42 - 5.7 MB/s which is very slow!
From what I can tell this is abnormal and not typical. Not every single one of these Seagate backup plus Hub Drives will be faulty, but it seems to have a higher number of failure than other backup drives. Now I'm stuck having to deal with Seagate hardware warranty which is 2 years and having to find a solution for storing my data while not having the drive. As always B&H is super helpful, I purchased it for work while budget was approved but did... Show More

Worked 15 Minutes and Died
Set up for non-eventful. I transferred two folders. During the third folder transfer, the unit quit working. When I clicked on the icon for the device, my iMac froze, a rare happening. After re-booting, the drive was not recognized by the computer. After struggling with the mess, I contacted Seagate Customer Service via phone. After a long time, Seagate concluded the drive was defective. Then they informed me shipping for the replacement drive wo... Show More

Don't even try re-formatting this thing
This is my second shot at this device. I returned the first one after the drive became totally un-mountable after attempting to re-format the drive from its native NTFS to the more efficient AFS for my Mac. Using Disk Utility has never failed me in this task ever on any other drive. This one however, no success. Multiple attempts, two different units. Unexpected issues
Issue #1: I have been able to format Seagate 0.5 TB, WD 2 TB, and WD 3TB drives to exFAT so they work directly with my Windows and Mac computers. Not so with this Seagate 8 TB. Formatting to exFAT causes this drive to be unrecognizable by Mac. I had to format back to NTSF and install the Paragon driver. Issue #2: Mac - Seagate 8 TB - Seagate 2 TB works just fine. The Seagate 8 TB is acting as a USB hub, and both drives are usable. Mac... Show More

It's okay.
I don't like its speed. Though it says USB 3.0, but when I transfer video files from another external hard drive (WD 8 TB). Speed first shows 130 MB/s then down to 100 MB/s finally after about 2 minutes it stays stable at 76 MB/s, which is only half of what they claim: 160 MB/s. Another minus, I don't know why they can not do it? The LED light when files are transferred. They should add that LED light. It does not cost anymore than few pennies, w... Show More

Some annoying things . . .
This drive seems to be fast and works as a drive should. Two things bother me about this drive: I own 2 other Seagate 4-TB drives, and they get done copying my files and stop making sounds. This 6TB drive keeps on clicking for many minutes after it shows 100% copy of files or folders. Does this mean that it is not really done copying? And, second, I am still running Win 7 Pro, and every once in a while the shortcut icon to this drive shows up with a question mark over it on booting up which stays there until the next boot, although it seems to work OK as a drive even with the question mark.

Not bad actually
While it's not the fastest drive on the market, it seems to be pretty reliable as a backup/storage drive. I find that when trying to edit 4K video on a drive like this, it can slow down the process when comes to rendering effects, etc. But overall it seems to be performing quite well for me as a storage drive. I think one key factor to extending the life of this hard drive is to not keep it connected to your computer continuously when not in use. Also, not keeping it plug to a power source when not in use helps.

Absolute Junk
Bought this to backup a NAS that has 6TB of data on it. Transfers (rsync) started out at 30MB/sec (not great) over USB, but by the time I got a couple of TB on this drive, transfer speeds had dropped to less than 1MB/sec. I seriously doubt it will even be possible to copy all 6TB from the server to this drive. Additionally, when totally idle, this drive continuously thrashes the head around for no apparent reason. Serves me right for buying Seagate. If you buy this drive, you have only yourself to blame.

5400 RPM drives... slower than the 6TB of the same line
I have the 6TB version of this and it was the fastest of my 4 external drives, so I bought 2 of the 8TB drive in the same line.... Nowhere on B&H, or Seagates websites is there any mention or RPMs... well, for some reason the make it up as they go along. The Backup plus hub 8TB drives are 5400 RPM... to slow for my video work :-( Why would the 6TB of the same drive be 7200RPM? Who knows, but I took these out of the external case to use as a RAID internally, so I guess I just got suckered out of $300+ :-(

Serves a Dual Purpose - Will buy More
I have a WD My Cloud Server (12TB) that has two USB expansion Ports on the back, I has used up both and was wondering how to easily increase the capacity and be able to continue doing so without having to configure more cloud servers. The 2 USB ports on the front of the Seagate drive mean that I can Daisy Chain Disks. So I can expand my storage cloud easily. I can buy a cheaper non Hub Drive for one of the Ports and another Seagate/Hub Drive for the other for practically limitless expansion.

Junk
I bought 2 of these. One has failed and is currently sitting at a data recovery company to get the FCPX projects off of it.. Although we always back up footage the actual projects / libraries were on this drive. We will be out around $1000 to get our data back. Plus we have to take parts from the other one to use to get the data off of the first one. The recovery company said they see a lot os Seagate drives..Save yourself from the hassle that these drives will cost you.

Excellent product
We now have two of these Backup Plus hubs in our home environment as backups to our two main workstations. Backups are VERY fast, simple to set up and manage, and after a few weeks, I can say very reliable. File or data recovery is simple drag and drop. The USB 3.0 ports on the front also simplify connections and provide those extra ports so we don't need to sneak around behind the hardware. I like it! Good work, Seagate!

Surprising Slow Performance
While I usually have good luck with Seagate products, this one is a disappointment. The unit was slow. One bulk transfers I could hear constant hard drive noise and the transfer rate rarely went over 70 Mb/s. Other USB 3 drives handle bulk transfers at speeds over 170 Mb/s. This one was returned as defective and I went with a competing brand (with much better speeds).

Large hard drive
I have used this hard drive for a few weeks on a Win 7 computer, and am generally satisfied with it. The drive is extremely easy to set up (simply plug in!) and very quiet. It is fairly slow, and therefore best for those who want to have a lot of storage space at a low price, but dont mind waiting a bit longer for large storage jobs to finish.

Neat
It's a thicc external hard drive that requires you to plug it into a wall to use. If it could run off phantom, I'd be amazed, but it still kind of sucks that you need to plug it in. I entirely understand. Four stars because I haven't had it long enough to really judge how well it can hold out, but it looks promising so far. Knock on wood.

No on-off switch
The drive seems to work well (I have two Seagate 4TB USB pocket drives that have worked well so far for a couple of years) but I was surprised that there is no On-Off switch on this 8TB units. So I often hear the disk spinning even when it hasn't been in use for quite a while. Maybe it's not a big deal, but I mention it just as an FYI.

Yes I would recommend this product and will purchase again.
So far this external hard drive is my blessing from the sky. Its capacity of 8TB for the outside dimensions is superb. Have is running for long periods of time without any slow downs. The only thing that I'm not too enthusiastic is the fact that it has preloaded programs that may be necessary but don't used then or not fully used.

8TB Hard Drive
I was really excited to receive this large hard drive to back up my video files. The only down side I can say is the installation. It wanted to use the Seagate software that was on the drive. At first it didn't really work properly, but finally got it working with some experimentation. Now it works great.
