Seagate 8TB Expansion Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive

Pretty good drive but a few issues
I have Windows XP and I purchased a PCI card with USB 3.0 ports on it to interface with the Seagate drives. Unfortunately, In the small print on a PDF I got from the Seagate web site, not in the published sales information, was the requirement that it required Windows 7 or later OS. My USB ports connected to the drives but the OS did not recognize them. I then purchased a used desktop computer with Windows 7 installed and 4 USB 3.0 port... Show More

Effective way to expand storage
For context, I am using a Linux mini desktop as my primary home platform. I reformatted the drive with the EXT4 file system. It is one of 4 expansion drives in my configuration. 2 of the other expansion drives are backups (using rsync), while this and one other drive are my primaries. I am moving a net of around 20GB of data per day onto these drives (adding around 35GB and removing around 15GB per day). All of the drives are between 60% and 75% ... Show More

absolute disaster with my MacBook Pro
As context, my computer is a top of the line, MacBook Pro 2016 in immaculate condition running all the latest software. The drives (I got two of them) worked fine when I first plugged them in. I formatted them moved loads of data to one drive, and setup Time Machine backup to a second one. I tested them, was able to save and retrieve files, and run TM backups to them, so I thought all was well. A day or two later, I realized that my internet was ... Show More

Slowest Drive Ever
Drive sees USB 3.0 ports as USB 2.0 on my machine and shows a warning every time it starts up. Seagate advised updating drivers. No improvement after doing so. Seagate then said a bad cable shipped with this unit -- but ignored my request for them to replace it. The plug that goes into the drive is not like any USB connector that I have ever seen. No idea where I would find another one. On a Windows 7(64-bit) pc, with a quad core CPU and 6GB of R... Show More

After switching from Canon to the GH5, my file sizes were upped in a big way. After a ton of research, I decided to not spend almost double the price for G-tech drives or LaCie. I know both of those are really reliable drives, but Ive never had any issues with any Seagate drives Ive owned. The first 8tb I bought has been plugged into my PC since Ive had it... that means a TON of run time. On Black Friday 2018, I was on a mission for 2 more 8tb dr... Show More

Good quality drive
This is my third 8TB Expansion drive. I formatted it as a Mac Extended (Journaled) drive. It seems to be working great with the Mac. The other two drives were formatted as Windows 10 NTFS drives and have been in service for a couple of years. Absolutely no glitches yet. I have used many Seagate drives since the 1980s. I have had only two failures in all that time. One was 35 years ago and I was able to recover that drive. The other was about 15 y... Show More

It is indeed a bit too loud.
Before buying it, I saw many reviews saying it is very loud. But since I do not use it as a cloud storage, so I don't really care if it is a bit loud. Speed is good enough I believe. The speed between USB 3.0 storage transferring large files usually starts at 150m/s, then goes down and stabilizeat 100m/s. And for windows system, you can just plug it in and start using it. The real storage size is 7.27 TB. Just in case. And for the noise part. ... Show More

Two Seagate 3TB work in tandem
I don't know why the vendors expect us to review drives when we first plug them in. How can I give a hard drive a 5 star rating until they've run for 4 or 5 years with no issues. So far so good, however. I use a product called Crashplan for cloud and local backup option and I recommend it. I find it works a little smoother on Macs than Carbonite, which works great on my wife's Windows PC. I use one STEB3000100 3TB for my data, and a 2nd one as ba... Show More

I just installed a pair of these on my iMac to support various photo and video projects. It's too early to say much about reliability, but so far so good! They worked right out of the box, though I reformatted them for use on a Mac (a quick and easy operation). One thing I wondered about before purchase that I can clarify in case you're wondering too. Affordable drive that does the job.
This is my 2nd purchase for this model drive. Haven't had any issues with them so far. I had to format these before using, which takes about 24 hours, which helps insures my writing on these later without errors. I'm using these on my server to store movies on my Plex, which I haven't had any lag or hesitations on movies when watching them. They do rattle a little at times when reading/writing but not enough to bother me. The drives do run a litt... Show More

Excellent external hard drive
I have a 3 year old Dell 2tb computer which is full, mainly because of photos, large photos from a Nikon D800. I have tried backing up my files on small portable hard drives oh, but it gets confusing on where everything is. Im so glad I got this hard drive as I have transferred over a hundred thousand photos to a folder, just by dragging and dropping, and I still have so much room. So glad I went with the a terabyte external hard drive as I can keep everything more organized. I highly recommend the Seagate 8tb expansion desktop external hard drive.

My 3rd Seagate: because they last.
First Seagate was an internal add-on to my Mac G5. It lived as long as the computer (years) with no issues. Second was a 3TB external, now several years old, used with my previous iMac--the 3TB still works fine. This drive was bought for use with the new 2019 iMac--I wanted more space for large photo and video files. Reformatting for Mac is effortless and takes only a few minutes with Disk Utility. One thing I like about the Seagates is that they make little noise when working. Some drives sound like they are shredding your data--not these.

Good value for large, relatively slow storage.
I'm using this as a big local backup drive for a 5TB and a 2TB working drive. It serves well for this purpose. Like others have said, transfers tend to start off fast and then settle into slower speeds. This makes it fine for backup, but probably not recommended as a working drive for photo/video editing. Drive noise is negligible. Will the drive eventually fail? Who knows, but most drives eventually fail - that's why I got this one as a backup after all! At least this one's relatively cheap so replacement won't break the bank.

Very Easy Process
I put this drive on my Xbox One and it formatted for games right away with absolutely no issues. I then copied my games from my 3TB external Seagate drive and again it was without issue. I am now using the drive for my Xbox One external storage and it is working flawlessly. I have never had any issues with my Seagate drives. The only drive that I ever had an issue with was a WD drive. I know others have different experiences but if I were going to buy another drive I would purchase Seagate.

Perfect for a NAS backup
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS network attached storage box and I used this 8TB drive to backup my NAS. This is not a fast drive and I wouldnt use it for anything but a backup and to store large files that you dont use often. It works perfectly for doing incremental backups After the initial copy (which can take awhile if you have a lot of data) Im only updating files that change. My NAS is setup to automatically copy and adds/changes/deletes and this drive is great fit for that task.

Solid Storage
I've only used this hard drive for a few weeks, so I can't judge its longevity, but it's working well. I've typically only purchased Western Digital drives for video work, but I bought this one as a large solution for Time Machine backup with my iMac because it was less expensive. Even though the drive is only listed as compatible with Windows out of the box, I can attest that it works fine with Macs as long as you re-format it with Disk Utility as soon as you get it.

Seems great so far!
I've only had my drive for a few weeks however as soon as I got it I ran all of the usual tests like S.M.A.R.T. and short/long read/write tests and it passed them all. I wrote about 5TB of backups to the drive over the first couple days and had 0 issues with it at all. Drive isn't loud and when writing to it at batches of about 250-500GB at a time it barely heated up. Assuming it lasts this will likely be the hard drive I keep buying as/if I end up needing more space!

So Far, So Good... backup at a bargain price
I own three of these drives, which house the 8TB Seagate Archive Drive. These are not speed demons, but they are not intended to be. I am currently using two for alternating Time Machine backups under macOS (Sierra) and a third for long-term offsite storage. Although hard drives are always a crapshoot, I've had no problems with Seagate external drives as backups since I started using them when they maxed out at 2TB. Odd are good you'll get a good one of these.

I would buy this product again.
I was very surprised that I connected up the 8TB hard drive external for additional storage and it came right up with the computer recognizing the full 8TB. The last time I brought on additional storage it was nightmare trying to get the computer to see the full 3TB it only showed 1TB. As soon as it was up I started downloading big movie files I have and the new hard drive took it all. Took 15 hours to download with no problems I was impressed.
