WD 4TB My Passport USB 3.0 Secure Portable Hard Drive (Black)

UPC's:
WD 4TB Portable Hard Drive
I purchased this for home desktop backup and file transfer & storage of work related items. I like the fact it can be secured and password protected for sensitive work files and peace of mind on everything else. Transfer rates are pretty good and I like the color options, this helps separate my easily from others ( I chose Orange). Backed up my files and then loaded work files to transfer and still had 1.5 TB left on the drive. You can't beat WD products as everyone I have owned is still working flawlessly and I have 4, 1 is still going strong after almost 10 years.

Very good design. Colors are great to differentiate projects
I bought this as an old drive I used for Time Machine backup showed some issues. I went to B&H and WD portable drives were the best value for price / capacity. I could have gone for the 3 TB drive, but the 4 TB was just marginally pricier and allowed me to keep more backups. WD offer several colors and it is a great option to differentiate projects / uses for each drive. Even the USB 3 cable is orange, and make it is easier to unplug the right drive when needed. For my Lightroom catalogs and photos I use smaller / faster SSD drives, yet these WD are a great option.

small, adorable, affordable and secure
small, adorable, affordable and secure. didnt do much with it to figure out how powerful it is but so far for backups its perfect, i wish 4T would really be 4T and not 3.63, i also didnt figure out yet how to lock the drive, i thought it would be simple in the installation software but didnt see it yet, i am also feeling that it might be slower than my 2T HD, i guess it needs more power from the USB to move things around, i will do video tests later to know for sure if this is a working HD or a backup HD. All in all, great price for a very well made product.

Perfect For The Photographer On The Go
Any photographer who shoots RAW and does a lot of editing knows how much memory the process devours. The WD My Passport USB 3.0 is the perfect solution for the photographer on the go. This device is conveniently portable and well built, with Western Digitals reputation behind it. Easily hooks up from my PC and laptop within the time it takes to plug it in to a USB port. With four TB of memory, you wont have to worry about running out of storage anytime soon. I would highly recommend this unit to anybody lookin for affordable, yet reliable external storage.

Space Savings All Round!
To be honest, I THOUGHT I was re-ordering my usual WD My Book 4TB drives (I have 9 of these, on a shelf in my office), at a fantastic price...so imagine my disdain, when an undersized parcel arrived. Nevertheless, I hooked them up, and found that they function just as well as the My Book drive, plus theyre smaller, and (especially important) QUIETER! I can stack a bunch of these puppies on top of each other, and still back up my photos / video jobs...and theyre about 30 bucks cheaper than the bigger, noisier desktop drives. Ill be buying these in future!

Bus Powered 4tb HD
Every year I purchase 3 hard drives for my photo business. 1 bus powered drive that to use as my work drive that goes with me from my studio and to home or where ever. In the past 2tb were about the max and fit my budget. About 8 months into the year I would have to delete some raw images that more than likely were never going to see the light of day. Now with this drive i will be good for an entire year and the 4tb drives to back up to at home and studio will now be used to the fullest. Only 2 days into 2018 with only 1 shoot so far and so far so good.

WD 1TB My Passport Replacement for WD 500GB Passports
I have two WD 500GB Passports which I bought at Costco and thought would suffice for quite some time, but building a personal library of my documents and books and building a law library has used up a sizeable portion of one of the 500 GB drives. And building a movie/video library has also used up a sizeable portion of the other 500 GB drive. Western Digital has long been a good drive, going back to the days when a WD 3.2GB was a big drive for me. I figure these WD drives (and perhaps some additional) will be part of the legacy I will Leave behind.

Good for backups
I run my own photography business and bought this to backup my photos and such. I run a raid 1 with two matching internal drives and I use the WD My Passport as an external backup for safety. I use the WD software that came with the drive and set it to back up twice a week. The initial backup my take some time depending on how much stuff you're backing up but thereafter it's quick and seamless. It works great, backs up what it's suppose to behind the scenes and give me piece of mind knowing I have all my data all backup. Peace!

WD drive is great
Drive works as advertised - and as always B&H service was great. The only thing I would like to advise, if you do want to password protect the drive, write the password somewhere because if you forget it you will have to erase the drive and start all over, because WD does not have a function to restore your password,. I know from personal experience, but luckily I had 0 files on the drive when I added the password and promptly forgot it. Getting old is not for the faint of heart. Otherwise I would buy again and recommend it to a friend

Re: Shipment hard dive packaging
Most drives are not that susceptible to shock when the drive are not spooled up because the needles/arms inside are in the stowed position. You could probably drop most modern drives that are not connected and not have any problems. I dropped a 2tb portable drive years ago from about 5 feet in the air onto a hard floor and I lost some data, but for the most part the drive was fine. If the hard drive is spinning, though, and you just barely drop it, it may experience damage as the needles/arms are not properly stowed.

Fast, reliable encryption, simple
I bought four of these in 2017 for archiving my photo library and backing up my laptop. Very easy to set up, the encryption has been reliable with no bugs or hiccups (unlike Bitlocker or NTFS). The drives are generally low use: plugged in for a few days each month doing non-stop file sync and transfers, then placed back into storage. One pair are in my air-conditioned office, and one pair are in my warm humid home, Ive had no issues using them over the years. Very fast transfer speed on USB 3.0. Would buy them again!

I would buy this again
These drives worked great on location. We recorded HD videos with a Panasonic GH4 during the day and I would load the footage onto 2 4TB My Passport portable Hard Drives (one for back up) at night. We did this for 3 days which included 20 interviews and about 1TB of storage. They're fast and reliable (so far). It's been 6 months and I'm able to edit the footage directly off these drives using Premiere CC. They worked for our budget and continue to do the job. Small, fast and easy. Note: Capacity is actually 3.63TB.

It's A Boring Hard Drive That Works!
Hard drives are hard to write reviews for because they are so boring. But, I can say that I love my WD 4TB My Passport. I have used Seagate external drives before, but this time I went with WD. I have used both over the years, and I have had good and bad experiences with both, so this is not a pro-WD or pro-Seagate post or anything like that. Facts: it is fast on the USB 3 port. It seems very quiet so far. It hasn't given me any problems yet. I have one on my Xbox One and one on my PC. I'd buy it again.

Great product, horrible packaging by B&H
I've had 3 of these a couple of weeks and they have not failed, so I expect they won't. I've bought probably a dozen Passports over the years and none has ever failed. But B&H shipped these in an oversized box with NO padding. They rattled loose in the shipping box all the way from NY to CA. I can only hope that the delicate drives don't show damage later on.The Passports rate 5 stars if they keep working. B&H rates 1 star for shipping. Love everything else about B&H, but not its shipping department.

Great for extra external backup
I use the 4TB Passport USB 3.0 to back up a 27 iMac and a G-Force external RAID 1 drive that I use for all media like photos, movies, audio, etc. I partitioned the Passport USB 3.0 so 1TB is used to back up the iMac's SSD main system drive and the remaining 3TB are used to back up the G-Force external drive. The ability to use the included USB 3.0 cable for power as well as data makes it easy to store the Passport USB 3.0 in my safe deposit box for a very secure external copy of my entire system.

New Design and Colors with the WD Ease and Reliability
I am glad they offer these drives with 4 Tera bite storage capacity - amazing in such a small unit. The drives are easy to use and I really haven't tried another brand as they are quite reliable, I've been using for years. The new color offerings will help identify the drives while plugged in as they have matching colored cords, that is smart. I've been naming my drives with the new color as a name so last one was yellow4 that works great with the new choices - I think I will buy orange4 next.

Always a dependable product
This is not my first My Passport, and it was as usual, very easy to set up. I have a MacBook, and it was recognized immediately, reformatted for the Mac in the blink of an eye, and ready to save files. My other one I use solely for Time Machine backups; this one will be used for saving various files and photos I want to archive or work with on the side. If you have a Mac, it will recognize it, tell you it wants to reformat it, and all you have to do is tell it to go ahead. Simple process.

Finally getting enough space
As an avid semipro photographer I'm accumulating hundreds of thousands of pictures. Instead of spreading over six external drives from the space-limited past, I'm starting to aggregate them onto this drive. I checked it with a deep scan and it's perfect. It's small enough to fit my bank safe deposit box as an archive when we are away from the office. I bought orange because I want to use it as a special storage space and stand out from the other drives. So far so good. Happy customer.

Stopped working after a few months
The hard drive was working fine initially. Then it started ticking amid working just fine. Now it gives I/O device error. It can't be recognized by my computer while another WD passport hard drive is still working with the same USB cable. Even formatting can't be performed. I also rebooted my computer several times, it doesn't help. After a phone call with a tech from WD, they offered a replacement. I have to pay the shipping cost. Also, the time AND DATA lost in it!! Not recommended.

Basic inexpensive, capacious portable drive.
Basic inexpensive portable hard drive, which I use for Time Machine backups. I do not monitor the speed but it seems fine through my USB-C ports. One nice thing is that the drive's case is of a non-slip material so it stays on the table, reducing the likelihood that it will fall if it is tugged while connected for backups. Do not bother buying the same drive pre-formatted for Mac if it is more expensive than the Windows version. These are easily reformatted for OSX.

NOT bootable!
This is a well designed amazingly small package. However, I had some significant issues creating the partitions I needed - PLUS the WD My Passport disk is NOT bootable, sopmething not recealed in any of the ads, etc. I am an experienced computer builder and and a reasonably sophisticated user, so I don't believe these issues relate to my inadequacy. C'mon, Western Digital, please be much more honest about the limitations of the My Passport product!

It's a lot smaller than it looks in the pictures.
It's a small portable drive that doesn't require external power and does what I ask of it. I have no complaints, it's a good drive. If I were to change anything, I'd tweak how the activity light works. It just blinks at a constant rate when the drive is accessed. It's really like it if the light better indicated the actual data access from and to the drive. There is a utility to turn off the light completely but that's really a solution.

High-capacity backup - works great
I have used WD Passport portable drives for years without ever having a failure. When it came time for a larger capacity backup, I chose the 4TB model. It works flawlessly on my two Windows 10 64-bit desktop systems. Note: if you have an older computer, make sure it can address a drive this large. There once was a 2 terabyte drive-size limit on computers and versions of Windows. If in doubt, contact the computer's manufacturer.

It Works
Well, the thing is doing what it is supposed to do, so I guess that deserves 5 stars...I've only had it for less than a month, so I cannot comment on long-term dependability, but all my 4 other WD external HDs are chugging right along after several years of usage. What is most impressive about this new one is the small size. For a 4 TB hard drive, it is only a little bigger than a deck of playing cards. I use it with my laptop.
