WD 1TB My Passport USB 3.0 Secure Portable Hard Drive (Orange)

Ask me again in 10 years
This is a 4 TB USB 3.0 hard drive. It's a commodity item - either it stores my data for 5 to 10 years (ideally longer) or it doesn't. If it suffers a catastrophic failure next week, I'll be able to write a bad review. But if it performs well I won't be able to write a good review for a decade or longer. I've had good luck with other WD drives, but as they say, past performance is no guarantee of future results. My only comment really has nothing ... Show More

WD MyPassport 4TB Portable External Hard Drive (Yellow)
If Western Digital made in an 8 TB shirt pocket portable external hard drive I could buy at a low enough price, I would. However, currently, it appears that only the 4TB size or capacity My Passport portable external hard drive is available. The current one I got is yellow, because that's the color I want it this time. I like to get different colored portable hard drive so I can more easily distinguish between them, since I keep different c... Show More

For backup
I recently paid out almost $2500 to recover tens of thousands of image files when two external hard drives failed within a week, and not all of the files were salvageable (about 3500 permanently lost). So I bought enough of these to do double back ups = two of these to store duplicate backups for each working external drive. The program that comes with them permits backup on a schedule = hourly, daily, weekly. I set the six I'm using on a monthly... Show More

Hard for Me to Use
I use a computer every day, but am not knowledgeable about the workings of computers. The device was not easy for me to use. I did not know terms used in the User Guide, and I was unable to install the device myself. The User Guide stated that the kit included a "quick install guide", but none was included. The User Guide stated to run "WD Discovery.exe." to install the device, but the menu for the device on my computer did not include "WD Discov... Show More

Solid purchase, no buyer's remorse.
I haven't had a lot of time to get to know the limitations of this product yet, but a lot of times with electronics you can get a feel for the quality within a week or so. The hardware is solid (not solid-state, just sturdy), and it feels very secure, but I would recommend purchasing some kind of case to keep it in, just to protect from drops and for piece of mind when carrying around. Great hard drive, (curable) problems with using it on Mac
This disk became a brick after I re-formatted it for MAC. I returned it in exchange for another disk, and I had the same problem. However, I found a way around this problem. Apparently one should not format these drives by the latest Mac software 10.13 (!!!), only by the older versions 10.12 or older. This is what I did. After that, it works without any problems on my Mac running High Sierra 10.13. Perhaps WD people know it because at their websi... Show More

Dead after 10 months
I bought TWO of these about 10 days apart (Oct 2018). One was going to be my working drive (I do photography, media, flyers, etc. for a local animal shelter) and the other was going to be my back up drive. The back up drive was written on 5 times only and the 6th time it crashed while backing up, never to recover...replacement is on the way. 3 out of 6 failed
I have purchased three of these 4TB MyPassport units. One of them failed (won't read, write, or format). Luckily I adhere to the rule "two backups is one, and one backup is none" so I had two more identical copies of my photography archive. The one that failed had been now twice "replaced" by WDC under warranty, and it took more work then just buying a new one. I had to wrangle a shipping label, I had to wrangle the second replacement, and n... Show More

Small and beautiful with plenty of storage.
First off, like all Western Digital Portable Drives, it is small. The orange is beautiful, bright and easy to distinguish between my other portable drives. At 4TB, it has plenty of space for all your media needs. I got it to clone my other drives, just in case because it's inevitable that drives will fail at some time. Reformatting the drive for my iMac was a breeze. I even partitioned it into 2 separate sections..... 1/2 for my GoPro footages an... Show More

real compact. good quality. but needs protection
I received the item in a very well-protected box. The price I got for mine is just right, compared to the price of the same items here in my country. Upon opening, I was surprised to see that it's much smaller than expected. Cables and accessories also very good quality. The power brick is virtually larger and heavier than the hdd itself. So said it's just 5400rpm and not 7200rpm, but so far the speed is good and never had any hiccups. If there b... Show More

Perfect for my needs!
I had a couple of goals when purchasing this portable hard drive: 1.) I wanted to use it to store photos while using my MacBook air, due to the fact that the Air has only a 256 GB hard drive. 2.) I also wanted to transfer photos and data from an older Toshiba PC laptop onto this portable drive. 3.) I wanted to set up Time Machine for the Air on this portable drive. Very satisfactory external HDD.
I have thoroughly tested this external HDD (with WD's software), reformatted it for larger sectors, and bought a high-impact case for it. It will hold all of my photos from Lightroom so that I can easily work on everything using my desktop while at home and on the road with a laptop. I will soon set it up with Bit Locker and find the cheapest way to back it up on the cloud. I wish it had a faster interface, but USB 3.0 will suffice. Please note t... Show More

4TB has plenty of storage. The set up went pretty well. The Drive seams co conflict with my laptop (windows 8.1 with Classic shell) in that an error message on shut down whether I have the drive plugged in or not. Outstanding image quality
No, this is not a gaming monitor. VA panels offer tremendous contrast and you can get very accurate colors, but the pixels don't turn on and off as fast as other technologies. It's phenomenal for photography, and almost as good for video (extremely fast action has some choppiness), but the 3000:1 static contrast ratio is the reason to get this monitor. Benq also offers eye-care backlighting, which does not use flickering to control the intensity ... Show More

Good capacity drive for extra capacity
The 4TB Passport seems to over good capacity for the money. The product was as described online, although I would have preferred the metal case model (was told it was continued 2 weeks after being on back order.) While the WD backup utilities seem to be doing the job, the interface is lacking as it tends to want to operate in the background and does not give out a good interactive screen so you can see more about what it is actually backing up. WD 4TB Portable Hard Drive
I have been a fan of WD Drives for some time and this product has continued to impress. The build is sturdy and pleasing to the eye. I use WD drives to carry business and leisure files when I travel and the capacity of this one means I can reduce the weight of carrying two or three lots of storage. I have had no problems with WD drives which seem to be extremely reliable and I believe my new 4TB drive will continue to give me the reliabiity I need. Although slightly more expensive than some other makers' products I still feel they are value for money have already recommended them to friends.

So far so good.
Bought this for my PS4 (yes, I know there is a PS4 version, it was more expensive and from what I was told this should work too). My PS4 instantly recognized and reconfigured it and it has been working fine. Its nice and small and fits right on top of my PS4 and looks as if you needed to travel with it it would pack very well (and only needs one USB cable to work with a device as it powers through it). Cant say much for reliability as Ive had it for maybe a month if that but so far I really like it :). It was rated one of the best externals to get for the PS4 which is why I got it.

Great Size Physically and Digitally
I have used prior Passport cases and I was worried that this new case design would not work for my older case, but it still is the same size, despite the new digital size of 4TB. It runs quiet. But I have not been able to test it for long use. I have had older Passports and would use them for about 3 years and they are always rock solid stability. A great external drive for storing pictures on a laptop. I use it with Lightroom and have no problem editing my pictures on USB 3.0. The drive comes in NTFS but you can format it to any format you want such as Journal for Mac.
