Glyph Technologies 3TB Blackbox Pro 7200 rpm USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C External Hard Drive

Rugged But Heavy
This item was purchased specifically for storing raw video files to be shot while traveling in different countries. It has vast storage space, which is good because I just got a GoPro Hero 5 and plan to shoot plenty of 4K footage. Its casing is made of thick rubber and feels very solid. I've used it a lot already (only bought it in September), and it seems very robust and reliable. That said, it weighs a ton. I have packed it in suitcases and alw... Show More

Working great
I purchased this Glyph drive on the recommendation of B&H. I needed a drive to transition to when I buy a new MAC Computer. This unit is supplied with two connector wires - USB 3.1 and Gen 2 type-C , so I will be all set. I know I will buy adapters, but a direct connection would be the fastest. I will probably buy another one in a few months. One cant have to many backups. It has an on and off switch, and Glyph tech says I can turn on and off at ... Show More

I would recommend
As some of the reviewers mention, the device does make some noise while working. This is subjective, but it is not too distracting. It is solid and heavy, which is an advantage to protect valuable work. It looks appealing with rubber encasing. However, the one important detail is the reformatting to Windows. While this is not too difficult, it is not as easy as people keep saying. There was no information on the company website on how this is done. The company does assist in doing the reformatting by phone if contacted by phone.

Stopped responding in less than a day
Ordered this drive for backup of video content. When it arrived I formatted it for Windows and started transferring content - got good speeds, but halfway through the transfer it disappeared from Windows. I checked the disk manager and it didnt even show up there. The HDD was still powered, but for whatever reason it had stopped communicating with the computer. Powering off multiple times did nothing. Not worth the price - especially when you can find better HDDs for less money elsewhere.

Nice Hard Drive
Have a G Tech for my new iMac and needed to back it up due to the fact that the external is my primary hard drive for my computer. I needed to back up my main external and purchased this one. Connected the USB C to my iMac and wow. Copied and downloaded the files on my existing external and it was super fast. Might get a 2tb to back up the 4 and store it away from home just to be safe. Also love the BandH shipping. Ordered it on Wednesday and was at my door on Thursday.

The USB 3.1 is really fast!
I have another Glyph drive and have found it very reliable, so when an older (another brand) backup drive failed, I knew I wanted a reliable replacement. I've had good luck with refurbs and this one qualifies in that regard. Out of the box to up and running in minutes. I'm using it with 4k video files on an iMac Pro and they play very well together. Like any good hard drive, I rarely think about it because it works well and without problems.

noisy drive
When I turned on the drive and started uploading photo files I noticed it was making a noise. I called the Glyph technical support and they told me they are not buying the drives from the same vender because of the noise issue. They also told me there isn't anything wrong with the noisy drives, but is the noise I'm hearing a normal noise or the drive failing? They are replacing my drive, but I had to pay to ship then noisy drive to them.

WAY TOO NOISY
It is alleged that this hard drive is very quiet except for the sound of the disc spinning. NOT TRUE. There is a very distinct and very audible clickety-clack even when the drive is sitting in idle. When the drive is being written to, those clicking sounds are constant and totally aggravating. The Rocstor products blow this one out of the water. Which is too bad, because it has a very nice appearance and seems solidly constructed.

Best option for price, quality and noise level
I just purchased a second Glyph Blackbox Pro after seeing good results from my first one. The enclosure is solid and heavy. Seems very rugged. The noise level is the quietest I have experienced in a 7200 rpm external drive available from B&H for this price point. My only complaint is that the power supply and usb cables are too short and do not offer many options for location other than close to the computer and power source.

Traded up
I bought a WD passport 4t and after backing up 500gb of hard drive, it would no longer mount. Scary. Tech support was incomprehensible, but my buddies at b and h expedited the 3t glyph to me after they received my return package. This unit is rugged, smooth, and powered. Very low noise, and fast! Pro grade all the way, although a little larger than some for practical field use.

GLYPH - Solid as a Rock!
Been using Glyph Gard Drives for 10 years. They are the best along with B&H! Just purchased a GLYPH 6TB Blackbox Pro 7200 RMP as a main drive. Couldn't be happier. Quite as a church mouse. Gives me confidence all my hard work is safe and sound. BTW...Glyph service and tech support can't be beat. Give a call, you'll love it.

Trustworthy, fair price
I use these frequently on tv/film production for media management. Ideal for a download station with power, or as a long term storage drive that you can edit on. 7200 RPM and USB-C connection means faster download times, which means a lot when your downloading often or multiple cameras.

Does everything right
when I updated to High Sierra time machine could no longer backup to my WD HDD, even after reformatting. Found similar issues on net. Glyph has been a joy to use; fast and I assume will last longer than my other brands that I replace after a year or two.

BlackBox Pro Drives are Great!
This is my fourth one fo these drives and they are rock solid. The reliability and speed are great for my workflow and I don't ever consider buying other brands anymore since I discovered these. Highly recommend.

Working like a charm
I'm using this on a mac for external storage, not time machine. I connected it and had no problems copying data onto it. I do not hear it at all and it is just warm to touch, not hot.

ok drive - though ran hot for me
but the biggest issue is support. This is the first time I had a drive fail and instead of swapping it out (under warranty) I was told to buy software $135 and then it didn't work.

Great drive except...
Great drive except that it failed after about a year and a half. Thankfully its still within warranty so I can get it replaced and restore from my backup. Always have a backup.

Solid machine
I cant speak to longevity, but this hard drive is built like a tank. USB-C connectivity to my Mac laptop make file transfer easy.
