I have never used sound recording equipment before. I bought this microphone to go with a digital recorder, in order to do homemade Story Corps -- interviewing relatives to get some of their stories recorded. I have done one such 45-minute interview, and the mike worked very well. It had to be held at a constant distance from the speaker's mouth (about 4-7 inches?) to get consistent sound levels, and thus required me as interviewer to act like a TV interviewer, holding the mike back and forth between me and my interviewee. For a while, she held it herself, but then sometimes she would vary the distance between her mouth and the mike, as she was not as careful as I was trying to be.Anyway, the mike seemed to work great, just as directed. It also seemed sturdy -- I carried it in its pouch, on the bottom of a knapsack, through five airplane rides and while traveling in between, and ended up pretty confident of its relative toughness. The mike required a special low to high impedance matching transformer to connect to my recorder; ... ... This microphone is probably the best dynamic mic for the price. The only competition is from the SM57, which has a meatier, darker sound compared to this one. If you're recording drums, bass, or anything that has a darker tone, you'd probably want the 57, but for everything else the SM58 is probably better. It has a brighter sound, which is perfect for not only most vocals, but also for acoustic guitars, snare drums, and most acoustic instruments. I've been using this mic for about 2 years, and I've known professional recording engineers who've been using it since before I was born. I had to return my purchase because the interface I bought for it wasn't compatable with my computer, but that has nothing to do with the mic itself. I honestly cannot think of a single flaw. Its extremely durable, I've had drummers whack the thing and not even dent the grill (by accident of course, I don't condone using this as a mace). ... More

Shure SM-57 & SM-58 Manufactured by Shure Bros. for decades without ever undergoing any notable changes., these two dynamic microphones have been the foundation of countless legendary recordings. Every studio, no matter how large or small, should seriously consider keeping a couple of these little workhorses around. The SM-57 produces a unidirectional pattern, limiting unwanted noise, while capturing a warm, fat response. This mic is great for recording loud guitar amplifiers, horns, vocals, etc. and can usually be purchased new for around $100.00 The SM-58 produces an omni-directional pattern, and is great for lead vocals. I have used this microphone for nearly every imaginable recording at one time or another. When all else fails, the SM-58 can always be depended upon for a clear, even response. Like the SM-57, this mic is also available new for around a hundred dollars, and is worth every dime. http://www.soundfoundationent.com ... More

I am the sound guy for my school and have done audio for my home churches kids camp. While there is nothing that I can say in a review that hasn't been said already, I can share some of my experiences with the SM58. The simplest way to say it is this: don't buy anything less than the SM58 for vocals. This mic willoutlast any other micand does so while also being versatile and great sounding. If you are looking for a lower cost microphoneto use for speech, Shure's 48 microphones (ie PGA48 and SM48) are great choices, but for vocals, the SM58 is king. Our SM58s are used by students who don't treat audio equipment well, but these have not failed us yet. I am sure that they will last longer than most of the equipment at our school, and that makes me confident in suggesting both the SM58 and other Shure products to anyone. You can not go wrong this purchase. ... More

Not a pro anymore (retired) but I used to be. SM58s were all we ever used for vocals, and SM57s for miccing acoustic instruments, amp cabinets, drums, etc - everything else. All I can say is - I spent about $100 on SM58s back in the '70s and '80s.... and they're still around $100. Nothing has changed - as far as I can tell they're just as rugged and just as good as ever. This mic has become the most-used vocal mic for a reason. They resist feedback onstage. They sound great. You can't kill 'em (and even if you do - it's a 2 minute job to solder in a new cartridge if necessary. There are a ton of competing great quality mics from EV, AT, etc etc... but they're not $100. You're gonna pay 2-3x the price for something that's only marginally better-sounding and most likely nowhere near as bulletproof.
