This is a must have mic for any active musician. This mic is excellent for stage use, but it is also very useful in a studio or project studio. This mic has been my main stage mic for over 15 years. The SM58 is known to be great for live use but it is also great to use on vocal recordings. The SM58 is also a great mic to use on a snare drum (especially since it is durable). If you are an active gigger, or recording artist, there is no doubt you've run across at least one of these mics. Extremely cheap, extremely reliable, and great sounding. Although this is mainly a vocal mic, i have used it for instruments, even drums, and gotten an acceptable sound(although we later layered the recordings). If you have big bucks, i would not recommend this mic, because there are many other expensive mics that would do vocals much better. However if you are a low budget musician such as myself, then i would highly recommend this mic for vocals, and as a last resort for instruments, although i would not recommend it if it can be avoided. Unlike one of the other reviewers who commented that the sm58 is "ok" for those who don't care how they sound, I couldn't disagree more! The sm58 may look plain but it's one of the most dependable durable microphones whether you're playing local clubs or touring miles from home. It is especially one of the best mics to have for those who care how they sound! I gig 2-4 times a week at many different venues in town that have all sorts of various acoustics to contend with and this mic provides consistent clean and crisp vocals with a lot of gain before feedback. I'm a drummer so the on-off switch is a good added feature and it's only a few dollars more than the sm58 without the on-off switch. I've had my 58 with the on-off switch for several months now and I've had no problems. I had an sm58 about 10 years ago and foolishly got rid of it so over the years I've tried many other mics from many other companies, some I thought were good like the Crown headset mic, the EV 767 and Audio Technica makes some good mics but very few overall compared to the sm58. The only other Shure vocal mic probably a little better is the Shure Beta 58 but it's also more expensive and for most vocalists it's not necessary. The regular 58 is simply a great mic at a decent price as is the sm57. Both have been around before most of us were even born and will probably still be sold at music stores long after we're gone. ... More

The Shure SM58 microphone is the most widely used microphone for vocals in any situation. This mic is always the first choice for vocals, but also sounds good on instruments, especially acoustic instruments like 6 or 12 string guitars and certain drums. The SM58 is a workhorse and built to hold up over years and years of constant use. It's simple to set up for live or recording use and so easy to afford.

This is a great mic - it's tried and true and holds up to it's reputation. I have used it for a few live performances so far and have no complaints. Only thing is the switch doesn't seem very robust like the rest of the microphone. I haven't had any problems yet, but I think that Shure could have beefed up the switch a little more. Starting to wish that I had gotten the standard SM58 - I'm going to stick with the 58S, but I'm a little concerned that the switch might fail some day.

I just bought the SM58 Mic because I needed a new dynamic mic and i had a very tight budget. The person who helped me out told me that I would be 100% pleased with the mic and it sounds as great as its higher priced couterparts. At first I was sceptical But after getting home and plugging it into my trusy peavey I was blown away. This Mic has a very crisp clear high end sound. Buy it it's totally worth it.

I've had my SM58 for a few weeks now, and I don't know why I didn't have one sooner. When playing with my band, the vocals are clear, even though we're loud in a tiny little room. As far as live performance goes, you can't get any better than this in the price range.

I am a PRCA rodeo announcer and have used the SM58 w/switch for years. It really brings out the bottom end of my voice like no other mic has. From rockin rodeos to jammin monster truck shows, its dynamic enough to still give unbelievable clarity even with blaring music behind us. It's also tough and can take alot of abuse. In fact, I put on the professional rodeo industry's top rated announcer's school and this is the mic that I recommend to all of my students. Thanks Shure for making such a great product!
BAD REPUTATION

It's the industry standard, and there's a reason for that. Yes there are other mics that cost more or whatever, but I can guarantee you, no matter where you play at, or who you play with, everyone will respect this mic, and know that you take your craft seriously. And don't be fooled by the ranting about this being a "LIVE" mic, it can hold its own in the studio too, in fact it may out perform a "cheaper" brand condenser. You can't go wrong with buying this mic.

The Shure SM58 is a standard and well respected for stage and studio use. For good reason this classic mic has been around a long time and every home studio needs one, or two. The package at GC with the boom stand and mic cable is a great deal. Do note this item does not have an on/off switch. If that is important to you, there is a Shure '58 with that option available.

I purchased the Shure SM58 Mic with the intention of another cheap microphone, but i was wrong! this Mic can withstand a lot of abuse even though its accidental and it still sounds brand new every time i use it i recommend this beautiful Mic for any vocalist or for use on the snare drum. it was worth every penny, also great for live shows and band practice and recording in a studio SM58 #1.

Was surprised to see that there was a marked diferrence between my first regular sm58 and the newlly aquired, sm58s. Maybe in time the two mikes will come closer together in sensitivity? Other than that...it works well, and is built like a tank in construction...a good thing! TP

I've read from reliable sources that the SM-58 and the venerable SM-7b actually share essentially the same mic capsule (the heart of the mic) but differ in the 58's not having any filters or low-cut switches, and that the size and optimization of the diaphragm on the SM7b are designed to emphasize the low end. This mic is pretty uninflected; I don't find the mic putting its 'signature' on the sound you get from it. Read online about the SM58's and SM-7b's similarities (there are several comparisons, some including actual sound files). Good luck telling the different apart in a blind test! So, for $100 you get an SM58 mic that has essentially the same sonic 'bones' as the SM7b and sounds a lot like it, too (AND you save $250). Sounds good enough for me. The only thing that is a slight bother: the handle on the SM58 is pretty short, actually, and there was more handling noise than I had expected. Gotta keep your hand still, and then you'll have a durable, crisp, unexpectedly warm-sounding mic. ... More

Been using these mics since the 1970s. The Shure SM58 is super reliable with an effective cardioid sensitivity pattern and a reasonably flat frequency response as long as you stay more than an inch or two away from the windscreen. Yields a pleasant bass boost when used closer -- the famous "proximity effect". These are great workhorse microphones that will never let you down. Great for both studio and stage. This mic is comparable to the Sennheiser e-385, another fine workhorse cardioid dynamic mic with similar characteristics and pricing. The Sennheiser has a wee bit more high-end response, yielding a slightly brighter signal. The Shure SM58, however, works a bit better with loud sound sources. As a karaoke singer and former DJ, I got tired of using Nady and other cheap microphones due to the distortion in the sound and the pickup of noise. I bought a pair of SM58S (with switch) microphones about 3 years ago and have never looked back! They really are that good. I have been around sound systems for 30 years and have been told many times to buy only Shure microphones but did not listen due to budget restraints. I finally broke down and bought my very own Shure SM58S microphones and WOW, what a difference!!! There really is a difference. It is like night and day. No distortion. No background noise. No hissing, popping or sputtering! Just clean, crisp vocals. The microphone actually makes people think I can sing! All kidding aside---do not buy an inferior microphone to save a few bucks. Industry Standard Does Not Mean the Best

This thing has been the standard for so long. Now there are a lot of mics in the same price range that naturally try to improve on that benchmark. And they are better. The president uses a 57. Does that make it the best vocal speech mic? No, although the 57 is good for just about everything else. The 58 was originally part of a sound system that wasn't tuned quite right, so they compensated by giving the mic an eq scoop. Some people say they like the eq of the 58, but often the house eq will have a happy face eq curve to make up for the increased mids. The problem is, that now, with so many mics that are better than the 58, one doesn't stand out as a new stadard. But watch the latest performances of bands today. unless they are using a house system, or they don't care much for details, you will see a lot less people using the 58. One that I like is the EV N/D267a. Good clean sound, strong signal, and better feedback control. So search around and see what else is out there before you buy the same boring standard equipment. ... The SM58 microphone has been an industry standard for vocals for as long as I can remember. My work as a comedian needs the switch on and off feature and the quality only SM58 offers. Most performers do not need the on and off switch feature but where you want quality vocals and control over your microphones without using a sound person to set the levels this is what you need. I have never used sound recording equipment before. I bought this microphone to go with a digital recorder, in order to do homemade Story Corps -- interviewing relatives to get some of their stories recorded. I have done one such 45-minute interview, and the mike worked very well. It had to be held at a constant distance from the speaker's mouth (about 4-7 inches?) to get consistent sound levels, and thus required me as interviewer to act like a TV interviewer, holding the mike back and forth between me and my interviewee. For a while, she held it herself, but then sometimes she would vary the distance between her mouth and the mike, as she was not as careful as I was trying to be.Anyway, the mike seemed to work great, just as directed. It also seemed sturdy -- I carried it in its pouch, on the bottom of a knapsack, through five airplane rides and while traveling in between, and ended up pretty confident of its relative toughness.The mike required a special low to high impedance matching transformer to connect to my recorder; ... ...
