A Twist of Fate

Sennheiser ME 66 Supercardioid Shotgun Microphone Head Review

Sennheiser ME 66 Supercardioid Shotgun Microphone Head

I normally have a lot of trouble with microphones, being more of a video person than a sound person. So far however, this microphone has proved to be an invaluable tool in my one man filming arsenal. As so far I'm doing all the jobs on my films, having something that is efficient, high quality, and easy to use is always a plus, and of course this little beauty performs marvelously well.

Thoroughly Swell

I'm a freelance videographer, and have used this mic on camera, freestanding, and boom. It's got great range and flexibility. I once used it to capture intelligible interview audio while somebody was running a chainsaw in the background. Is that recommendation enough for you? While I'd say it's not the best mic for indoors, I can't say much of anything on the negatives of it.

This mic is an indie industry standard for a reason. Wonderful clarity, even better than the $1,500 MKH 60. Granted, it doesn't have the construction of the MKH, that mic is nearly indestructible, but it is still a solidly constructed mic, and a great bargain for the quality.

I couple the ME66 with the K6 power module, and use it for audio coverage at weddings as well as on indy movie sets (on a boom pole) to record actors' dialog. The super cardioid pattern is great for picking up audio up to 4 feet in front of the mic. Best used on a boom pole and angled slightly (instead of pointing straight down) because the shotgun mic can pick up audio from directly behind it.

I have a Panasonic HVX200A and the mic on the camera is of poor quality. I'm not an audio person so much as I am a shooter, but working with this mic has been a dream. I have it attached to my camera with a nice shock mount and I am still impressed by the distance and isolation this mic will pick up sound with.

I recently purchased and used this mic on my Canon XH-A1 to video an elk hunt in Montana. It's directional capability was incredible in picking up the diferent sounds that the bulls were making, even at a great distance. I'm very satisfied with this product.

I use the ME66 for oral history and for nature recording. Very versatile. When used with the K6 power module, it doesn't require external phantom power, which allows it to be used with small, portable recorders like the Oly LS-11. The build quality of the mic and power module are excellent. No complaints.

Excellent Sound quality for the price. I have my mic running through a Firewire 6 Channel Mixer, on a boom pole into a laptop running Cool Edit Pro and I have also used a condenser to get softer more dialouge rich sound.

The Senheiser K6 line of mics has for years been my choice whan a good quality affordable mic was called for. I especially like the ME66 short shotgun. I've used this mic mounted on the camera, on a boompole or handheld and am not disappointed with its performance. Great presence when used close-up, low noise in quiet situations and rugged enough to take some knocking around.

Great price, great sound quality!

I'm a DP, not an audio guy. If I was an audio guy I'd probably buy some way more expensive shotgun mics (just for the name). These, however, are the best bang for the buck. I have one that's 25 years old and still sounds identical to this new one. Built like a tank!

I compared it to the same mic I have from 15 years ago. This version seems warmer and has less sibilance. Does what it does really well. I bought an MKH 416 T as well but that was dead on arrival. I await to see how that shall be resolved by BHphotovideo. This is a solid buy for its price to performance capability.

This mic I got as a gift is excellent for film and video sound recording. It delivers excellent quality and is esy to use, it has a good off axis rejection, but also is very forgiving when you are aiming a little wrong to the subject, so if you're recording on a noisy environment, I'd suggest you look for a more directional long shotgun, but for most uses works great.

I've used the ME66 a few times now and am very happy with it's performance. I chose the ME66 because it is short enough to mount on a camera without partially blocking your shot and it's pickup pattern suited my needs. I've used other Sennheiser products in the past and have never been disappointed.

I had the opportunity to rent this mic to see if it would work with the productions I record. I was very pleased with the results. After figuring the annual total to rent vs. buying it outright, it was more cost effective to buy and own my mic and have use of it for years to come.

I have used this mic in many environments, and have never been dissapointed with the quality. The ME66 always produces audible speach and it picks up many other sounds quite well. I haven't found a shotgun mic that sounds better under the $500 price range.
