Most amazing mic ever for doc work

Sennheiser MKH 8060 Moisture-Resistant Short Shotgun Microphone Review

Sennheiser MKH 8060 Moisture-Resistant Short Shotgun Microphone

For the past 4 years, Ive used all Rode gear, especially the NTG3, which I grew to love. Then, on a recent shoot for a client, it stopped working. I got it fixed and it remains an important part of my arsenal, but the experience made me think about an upgrade, and then using the NTG3 as a backup. It was a very difficult decision to make, since, for whatever reason, its way easier to justify the purchase of a 2k lens than it is a higher end microphone. Weird. Finally though, after a lot of deliberation and tests, and I got the 8060. The main word that comes to mind after using this on a few shoots is: Wow. Its small, light, and draws very little attention to itself. Its far shorter than the NTG3. And this mic makes dialogue sound like you were actually there when you re-listen to the footage. Its hard to believe. There are a lot of times now where I dont bother using a lav at all since I know this mic will capture exactly what I want. What Im getting at is that, as much as I liked the NTG3, the 8060 blows it out of the water. Theres no comparison. As a one person crew a lot of times operating in dangerous locations around the world, its important to keep a low profile, while also capturing the best audio possible under difficult circumstances. If thats what youre looking for, look no further. This mic will seriously change the way you think about, and plan for audio on shoots. Dont get me wrong, a good lav does wonders in a lot of situations as well, but I found this mic to be ultra clear, and perfect for my purposes. It was also amazing for ambient pickup, and slightly off axis pick when people are having a conversation. If youre on the fence about this, two words of advice: dont be. Its maybe the greatest equipment purchase Ive made in the last 4 years. ... More

What can I say? You get what you pay for. I bought this to use on my Canon C100 as a camera mic and to detatch and boom with because I wanted top quality sound with a low profile. Well, I got it. Sounds amazing, and it's amazingly small. I shoot mainly documentary, and I can't tell you how many shots I have of people staring above the camera at an indimidating long shotgun mic. I wanted great sound, but without making people feel like they had a gun pointed at them. I also plan on traveling overseas, and wanted a great mic that wouldn't attract as much attention. Sound is more important than image, and why not spend the same money you'd spend on a lens on a great mic? I haven't road tested it enough to know it's durability, but it's a sennheiser and I'm not too worried. ... More

I got the redesigned version of the mic(where Sennheiser fixed the earlier issue of intermittent static noise, see JWSound for more). PROS: 1. Excellent clarity of recordings, decent bass response. Unlike MKH8040, it does not go too low to create rumble problems. It also has a presence boost to help distant recordings. 2. Very portable for a shotgun mic, especially inside a cinela pianissimo windshield. ( This, being a shotgun mic, is definitely more wind sensitive than my Rode NT55.I found that fur cover for pianissimo IS NECESSARY when recording faint distant sounds even in a light windy day. Low cut filters help too ) 3. Very sensitive (66mV/Pa!) with low self noise. Might be ideal for bird-call recordings, as it has reasonably good reach. CONS: I'd be happier if the mic had an inbuilt pad/ higher max SPL ratings for loud situations. So far I'm using external pad and Y-cable with my MixPre-D to get around that. ... More

I ordered this microphone primarily for recording dialogue in educational videos as part of my job. I couldn't quite afford the 416 as it is about 3x the price, but I knew I wanted something with a similar sound profile and directionality. The mic is a standard shotgun microphone, so it is very directional, and does a great job of rejecting off-axis noise. For its price-point, it is very low-noise, and has a great sound profile for dialogue. Rich and clear low end, with a bright treble and no harshness. The only problem with this microphone is that it is extremely gain hungry, and needs to be as close to your sound source as possible. This can be difficult to achieve for anything other than talking head type shots where your speaker is occupying most of the frame, and you can have the mic boomed just out of frame around 12 inches away from the mouth. With this positioning, on my Audient iD14 interface I have to drive the pre-amps at about the 2 o'clock position to get a decent amount of gain (peaks at -20 dB, and averaging around -30 to -25 dB). I'm not sure if my unit is simply defective, or if this is par for the course so it would be great if BH Photo Video could comment on this. Other than this quirk, I do find that the microphone has an adequate quality of sound for my purposes. However, the limitations of positioning due to how much gain it needs makes it a bit inconvenient. ... More

Beautiful, clean and clear sounding. I use this mic for recording bird songs in the Pacific NW. It yields a nice, finely detailed recording that I've been pleased to see extends well above 32k (as visualized in iZotope's RX, recorded at 96k and 192k). I hadn't even realized birds had harmonics that high... Off-axis rejection is excellent, making recording in noisy environments possible when other mics were failing. My ONLY problem with this mic is that Sennheiser has yet to make a figure-8 match for an M/S stereo pair, meaning I'm on the open market looking for an alternative. Come on, Senny... ... More

Great mic. A significant upgrade from something like a rode videomic pro. More pro XLR connection, so you can boom it, and much better build quality. Also, if you pair it with a 32bit float zoom f3/zoom f6 field recorder, it takes EQ like a dream. Very beautiful sound when you have a 32bit float recorder w good dual gain digital preamps. Not afraid of damaging it or humidity. Its a workhorse and versatile for a reasonable price. You need to phantom power it, and I wouldn't recommend using the internal battery feature, since it can add noise with some recorders, but phantom powered, it sounds very clean. Sennheiser once again delivering good value for money and a high build quality. Definitely not a toy mic. ... More

A wonderful mic for the right use, excellent for outdoor field recording especially, loud signal and low noise floor. I found the extra included here mostly needing replacement, and not great quality : The wind cover always suffers from wind noise outside- with the short mic doesn't completely cover the holes at the same time as the shock mount rubber grips can hold onto it (this might be remedied by a better shock mount from Rycote) The cables I thought would be fine but the angled connectors shake around! Terrible idea for location recording when you are moving around. If you need one, The boom pole is quality and is maybe the only reason to get this bundle in my opinion. The handle can pretty much be tossed, not sure that it is worth having in your sound kit. It could work but its not a good solution, and easily gives handling noise. ... More

This Sennheiser MHK8060 has a real nice flat line sound across all frequencies. I have used it for outdoor video shoots and it effectively reduces the surrounding background noise and wind when booming it over my subject and using a Rycote Windshield WS3. I do notice slight muffling of my subject's voice when 45 degrees off-axis, but that is common with this length of shotgun mic. I love that this is a modular system and can be made into a digital mic also. Now I need to get the MKH 8040 & MKH 8050. You cannot go wrong with Sennheiser!!

The only drawback is the price, as one can find something pretty decent for a lot cheaper, if willing to sacrifice some degree of sound and build quality.

Pros: Good rejection in small size, high output, low noise, has less off axis harshness or thinness, reasonable max SPL rating and immunity to moisture. Cons: Off axis dullness. See the polar pattern for 16kHz, post 15 degrees off axis, it falls off drastically compared to other frequencies, this is NOT the case for longer shotguns like MKH60 or 416. This means recordings sound muffled when sound source is wider than 30 degrees. I am somewhat regretting not buying the pricier (holy grail) Schoeps CMC641 which has the ideal supercardioid pattern.

Don't expect magic if the source is already questionable but this will capture what is there in a natural way. Cons, of course, will be the price. The results have yet to overcome the price that I have paid for it but only time will tell.
