Great Directional Mic

Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone Review

Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone

I'm a video professional, so most of my shooting is done for a paying client. When I bought this Mic, it was for a sports-related shoot where a lavalier Mic would have picked up too much rustling from clothing, etc. and a boom mic wouldn't have captured all of the sounds from the actions on the screen. The DM-100 Mic, though inexpensive, did an excellent job of capturing all of the action in front of me, canceling out extraneous noises that happened out of the shot, thus preventing me from having to do a lot of audio processing during the editing phase of the project. Kudos to Canon for making a killer mic! ... More

I bought this originally for my Canon HF100 and will also be using it for the Canon HF S10 that I will be getting soon. It comes with what looks like a dead rat to cover the mic to protect from wind noise. On the HF100 where the hot shoe is at the very back of the camcorder, the mic sits well above the zoom level and photo button so there should be no trouble using them under the mic unless you have very large hands. This won't even be an issue on the HF S10/S100 camcorders where the shoe was moved forward. The audio quality is good and the small noise you normally hear with the built in mic is absent. I normally use it in the Stereo 90deg setting which picks up everything that I need. The shotgun mode works well but not as well as some shotgun mics I've used in the past. Its a good mic for the money I paid for it which is cheaper then when it first came out. The fact that it doesn't need an external battery is a bonus to me as it keeps everything lightweight. ... The reason I give it 3 stars was because of not being able to see a noticeable difference in recording with this vs. recording with the built-in microphone in my camcorder (Canon HFS100). I am not sure if it is because the built-in was good or because this external microphone is not that good. I had to do some quite room recording tests to see if there is a real difference. At first, I got very hollow sounding voice. I think it still continues to be there. But, It does catch the sound little amplified, which is good.

This microphone is vastly superior to the on board mic on my camera (HF21). The sound quality this thing provides is outstanding, but I'm just a casual user who's never owned something like this before. The included wind sock also works very well - If there is any moving air near your camera you'll want to use it. The difference is night and day. The only problems I have with this mic is that it's only attachable to the camera. The ability to mount it to a pole of something similar would be helpful for getting better quality audio, such as dialouge, from a distance. Especially with a noisy background. The directional switch also seems a little pointless - It didn't really made a difference in actuall recording angles that I could noticably tell. Overall, this was a great buy and I'm very happy with it. I would definitely recommend this to anone with a Canon Camcorder. ... More

I was amazed at the quality sound that the microphone picks up. It's also very small but matches the size of the Canon Vixia HF10. Just slide it on and go. The settings are right in front and easy to access. I initially was going with another mic but noticed that the hot shoe is slightly lower/recessed into the body of the camera, so if you don't go with the DM-100 make sure that one - it fits the recessed hot shoe, and two - that it registers with the camera (you see the s hot shoe logo in the view finder when the mic is working). I use it for interviews, recording church music, musicians, bands, podcasts and general video for the web. In some cases I'm about 30 feet away from the singer and it still does a great job of recording. It also didn't drain the battery as I thought it would. The only improvement would be to lower the price. ... More

Still on the fence about this item. It seems like it does fairly well picking up sound directly in front (what I bought it for), but also picks up a good deal of ambient noise - which I was hoping to use this to avoid. I've only used it a couple of times so far. The construction seems solid, and it plugs right into the camera with no fooling around. One thing that lacks is a case to put it in when you're not using it. Leaving it attached to the camera looks like a good way to break both pieces of gear. ... More

I bought this microphone for my camera Canon HF100. Simple and necessary thing. The workmanship is very good. In this Canon as always on top! Works expected. Of course, this can not be compared with a microphone, which has a wire to length and it is always about the person whom you are shooting at the moment, but that is not to be expected from this microphone. In general, a very powerful one, if you need to improve the sound quality. The sound it records exactly better than built-in microphones, another question - whether this improvement is the money that ask for it. It's up to you. And one more nuance to those who are going to buy it - keep in mind that in the mode of the gun, he wrote only mono sound, stereo modes, is possible only when 120 and 90 degrees. ... More

This microphone will take your camcorder to the next level, allowing you to capture the sound at the source as if you are there. The shotgun setting gives you zoom recording with very little sound leakage from outside the zone allowing you to match audio and video zoom. Great for speeches, street interviews, and recording performances. all those long distance jobs that are plagued with extranious noise sources. the sound quality is good to excellent on all settings and the wind shield works without damping sound. The only worry I have is with the hot shoe connector, the metal contacts are easily bent or broken off. Take care! Canon, how about a plastic slipper to protect the contacts when not in use? ... I take a lot of video of high school marching bands with my Canon HF20 HD video camera and from the stands the sound usually has a lot of fan noise especially when I use a wide angle lens to get more of the field in view. This microphone picked up all of the sounds of the band from well over 100 feet away and reduced unwanted sounds to a pretty acceptable level. I do this for fun and to build video shows for the kids to see. The combination of great sound with HD quality video makes for a great show. yep, a bit pricy but if better audio (on a Canon video camera with the mini advanced accessory shoe) is what you're looking for it's a great product and very easy to use. I have not used the mic enough in various situations to really provide an indepth review, but I can say the performance so far has been good. For the price, it's an inexpensive way to significantly increase the audio quality when recording video. It's not practical to rely on the built in mic on most pro-sumer level cameras. I use it on my HF-G10, it attaches and detaches very easily, and I was pleased that it came with wind screen for outdoor use. It does feel a little cheaply made (mostly plastic), but what do you expect, it probably can't be made out of other materials as this would significantly increase its weight. Con's: As others have noted the mount feels a bit flimsy. I'll have to be extra careful with it. I was a bit disappointed that it picks up handling noise very easily.
