This was an addition to my HF G10. It's an expensive improvement over the on board mics. The mic fits nicely on the camera and works as well as a small unit might be expected. It's inconvenient to have to turn the camera off to change settings on the mic. There's a learning curve with the settings and knowing when to use each one. It's also a good idea to set the mic input levels manually so the audio doesn't clip.

For the price, I would expect a lot more. My method of testing was simple- I set the recording level manually to 90% on my Vixia HFM31, then recorded a segment of audio at various distances. I removed the microphone and repeated the test. There was very little difference, if any, in the playback level, while the segment with the microphone did yield slightly better clarity. The DM-100 may give you a slight advantage in background noise also. I've used other similarly priced external camcorder mics that blow this thing away. I was expecting a lot more! It does come with a good windscreen, and I'm hoping it will pay itself off since I'll be using it frequently in outdoor/windy applications. Don't expect a miracle upgrade here, it's not. ... More

I bought this DM-100 mic to record stage productions from the lighting/sound booth 80 feet from the stage. I connected it to the hot-shoe on my Canon Vixia Hi-Def HG20 camcorder. A rehearsal video, without the PAC sound system operating, picked up the cast with remarkable clarity in shotgun mode. I'm very happy with my decision to purchase it, and B&H delivered it on time. I had also purchased the Canon camcorder from B&H a few years earlier, so I knew I would get great service from them.

The DM-100 Canon mic works well. The plus: focused audio, less handling noise and quick on and off mount. The included wind sock is very effective. The minuses: light construction, the audio lacks in the bass dept., probably to minimize the wind and handling noises. You can get a fuller sounding mic. in the same price range but you will loose the convenience. For what its designed purpose is, I would buy it again.

I recently bought a Canon digital camcorder and attempted to record my band at a concert that we played at. The camera was setup within the audience. The video quality was good but the audio track was overwhelmed by the audience noise really making it hard to hear the music that we played. I searched the Internet and found the DM-100. Last week my band played again. With the new DM-100 directional mic, the peripheral crowd noise was minimized quite well, not completely but much much better. The stereo effect also enhanced the audio track. I'm quite happy with this mic. ... More

I purchased the DM-100 to mount on my new Canon HFS-21. I have used a Canon DM-50 on my Optura Pi camcorder for 10 years with very good results. I recorded my great-niece doing a piece for an acting job. I placed the switch on the DM-100 in the shogun position and listened to studio quality sound on my Mac computer. To say the least, I am elated! The furry looking wind screen is an added plus as I recorded the young lady in my backyard when a breeze was blowing. The mic has a 3-position switch-- shot gun, 90, and 120. As with the DM-50 on my older digital camcorder, I am leaving the DM-100 mounted on the HSF-21 as I will not settle for anything less than good audio. ... More

Find it to very sensetive to in shotgun mode nice for birds and conversation. I just used it at the fout of july fireworks at waterfont in portland Oregon and my experiance and use I should have set then mike on my vixa 10 to manual and kept the peeks bursts just at the max then I wouldn't get the constant gain contral from the camera that was eratating. The stereo is great with the 2 setings and it is lite, fits in my case with the camera, and I take it with me on my bike. It would be nice if they had a high and low cut off switch to make it a little more range of use. Tim; ametrure for 30years ... More

I use this microphone in order to get better sound than the onboard mike. This little unit really improves the sound quality! The only setback is with its windscreen. Canon could have done a lot more in this area. Although it helps a bit to have it on, it really isnt all that great. There is too much physical contact between the mike and the interior body of the windscreen which significantly reduces its effectiveness in noise reduction. Otherwise all the other functions are absolutely great!

Sounds great. Shotgun setting is very directional with really good side noise rejection. Shock absorber mounting good and wind muffler works.

We had trouble with wind noise and extraneous sounds when filming interviews of people outside in public places. This mic improves the sound quality. It is easy to install and uninstall on our Canon Vixia HF200 and it automatically overrides the internal mic. And people love to comment on the cuteness of the furry cover.

This mic is perfect for my Canon G30... No need for mic batteries or a wire. This mic turns on when the camera turns on and mic level is adjustable on screen.

Convenient! No need for wires or additional battery concerns; this works the same as the built-in mic, i.e. no need to turn on/off, and it runs on the camera's battery. This is the main reason I purchased it. Sound is good, though, honestly, I haven't tested/compared to similarly priced microphones. If you don't mind using external batteries and aren't afraid you'll forget to turn on the external mic during a key moment/event (eg. wedding vows), this is a quality, convenient mic to use. A little pricey, though.

I had to film outside on a very windy day. I set the mic to shotgun and the results were astounding. Very happy with this product.

A great addition to the camera for gathering audio from subjects directly in front of or at a distance from the camera. Extremely small in size (compared to other 'monsters' I've used)but highly capable. Ah, the benefits of improving technology! Includes a fuzzy wind shield I keep on all the time. Note: Is compatible only with 'Mini Advanced Shoe' capable cameras!

I video tape games for high level soccer coaches. They wanted to get good video as well as good audio to evaluate how players were communicating on the field. I use the Canon Vixia hg21 which got the video needed but the audio was not as useful. Now I can get the audio I need by just popping on the DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone. I don't need to worry about carry around a lot of extra equipment or batteries. I was pleasantly suprised by how well the microphone performed.

The external microphone is used with a Canon HFS-21 camcorder to film lectures in a large hall with high ceilings and a large open area. Results with this external mic results in improved sound over that of the internal mic but not not as much as hoped. Recommend not leaving the camera in auto for volume but manually adjust the volume to up the level. The size and the way it fits in the camera without needing batteries or wiring is a plus.

I am using this microphone on a HF-20 camcorder. The microphone works as expected. No directional microphone completely blocks all extraneous sound. However this microphone reduces surrounding noise considerably (especially in the shotgun mode). I have used the microphone for recording lectures in a small seminar room (around 5 ft away from the speaker) & am quite happy with the audio quality. The only con I can see is the rubbery interface with the camcorder. It appears flimsy although I have had the microphone for only a week & will update my review after a few months.

We use this microphone for in-service meeting. The camera is setup about 20-30 feet from the speaker and the microphone picks up the sound much better than the camera would on its own. Very easy to use, as the camera sets it up automatically when it is attached to the accessory shoe. Overall I am very pleased with the performance of the microphone.

I used this mic to record a concert at a church on two different occasions. The first recording was done directly in front of the stage, near the subs. The mic picked up the band's sound, pretty much flawlessly, even with the sub woofers so close. The next recording was done off to the side of the stage. Once again, the sound was picked up superbly. Although, the drums were loud and on that side, the sound still recorded very well. I would recommend this mic if you need additional attention to sound.

With the built-in mic, the HF-10 tends to catch too much of my breathing, and my voice. This mike allows you to catch the real important sound bites - the ones from your subjects! I dislike the fact that with the admittedly effective windscreen (the rat-like cover over the mic), it seems bigger than the video cam itself.
