The OM5 cuts like no other mic. plugging it in was literally like a "blanket off the monitors" effect. just for fun at rehearsal yesterday, I plugged in someone's SM 58 and AB'd the two mics. my guitar player said of the 58 after hearing the OM5 after it: "what the ####? why would anyone use that mic?" the OM5 rejects feedback better than any other mic i have tested. i literally can point the mic at the monitors ten feet away and nothing. it has the least proximity effect of any mic i have used. this keeps parts from getting bassy. it takes some getting used to because you cannot work the mic. you have to keep your mouth on it or very very close to it (mouth the mic). best of all, it does not color my natural tone. in summation, the OM5 is superbly articulate. no nasty bassy mess. no feedback, ever. my delicate parts sound beautiful. my aggressive parts soar above the mix. i should mention that this mic is made for a frontman. your mouth has to stay on the mic so playing an instrument will make it difficult to use. also, this mic will sing what you put into it. meaning, if you have poor chops, the audience is going to hear it loud and clear (in this case, a 58 is a good mic because it will soften up many vocal shortcomings). if you have great top end, the OM5 makes a 58 look like a child's toy. ... I always used SM-58 mics for live performances. I was told by every soundman that they were the ONLY mics to use. I then switched to Electro-Voice and Thought that NO OTHER MIC Could Beat the sound. When I purchased 2 Audix OM-5 mics, I was told by a Friend and Sound Tech that This Mic Was BY FAR The Best Vocal Mic in it's class. I put it up against the SM-58 and the EV NDYM and there was a NIGHT and DAY Difference in Clarity, Feedback Resistance, Mid and Bass Response, Presence and Extreme Gain in Both Monitor and PA Levels. Since I switched to the Audix OM-5, my Sounman and Many Other Sound Techs Request that ALL the mics used for stage are Now AUDIX!!! This is a GREAT Mic!!! I Would Highly Recommend the Audix OM-5 to ANY Live Performers and Studio users. Audix mics are Very Well Tailored to TRUE VOCAL SOUND without handeling noises and unwanted background noise. Try One and Hear Your REAL VOCALS Cut Throught the Mix!!! Your Soundman and Your Audience WILL BE AMAZED!!! ... More

I just bought one a couple of days ago. I was actually intending on buying a Shure Beta58 or Sm 58 when I walked into the store. A friend happened to be there and suggested I check out the Audix mics. Up to that point, I had never even heard of Audix. For many years and I've always used my Sm58 and was happy. I was skeptical at first with the explanation, but then he suggested we take the mics and plug them into a PA and compare. We took 4 mics, an sm58, Om2, Beta58 and the Om5. We used only one channel on the mixer in order to compare the mics equally. The difference was amazing. The Om2 sounded better than the Sm58 and the Om5 sounded better than the beta58. Both of the Audix mics had a more true natural sound than the Shures. Off axis sound rejection was far superior than the 58's. Mic handling was much quieter than the 58's. We screamed into the Audix''s and neither one distorted at all. Neither one of the Audix mics fed back on us in our tests. My old favorite, the Sm58 fed back the most. It was kind of a tough decision between the Om2 and Om5. Both mics sounded great. I chose the Om5 over the Om2 because the off axis sound rejection and quietness while handling the mic was a little better. I tried it thru my PA and was amazed at the difference between my old 58 and the Om5. Thru my speakers, I used to hear my foot steps on the wooden floor radiate thru the mic stand. Now, all is silent until I step up to the mic and sing. I will get a couple more Om5's and an Om2. I highly recommend these mics. ... More

Less narky and great for loud stages

I have a bunch of OM5s which I use generally on all sorts of bands when I work as an in-house live sound engineer. On a bitey sound system they're a more pleasant vocal mic than other ubiquitous vocal mics you see around a lot. I find the OM5 has less mud, a slightly rounder mid, and doesn't suffer from the high mid narkiness of other common vocal mics. There's a very usable top end brightness which really brings the vocals to the front without being sibilant or harsh. The tighter pickup pattern also helps cut out spill from loud guitars and drums, which means the mix sounds clearer and tighter. Another bonus is that you can get a much louder vocal level in your monitors before feedback rears its ugly head... Useful for weak singers. The matte black finish looks very subtle and cool, and a little dangerous, and doesn't steal attention away from the singers. The biggest problem I have with this mic is the pickup pattern is too tight for singers who move around a lot in front of it. If your vocalist plays guitar and spends a lot of time turning her head to watch her fret hand, you'll frequently lose level as she goes off-mic. This is the flip-side of having a good tight pickup pattern. ... More

I've owned OM5's for over 20 years! I still have my original 2 OM5's. They are certainly worn, but they work as well as the day we bought them! Not to be rude, but if your vocal mics on stage are SM58's you've DEFINITELY hired the wrong sound company. While a ground breaking microphone in its day, the OM5 is a far superior instrument and it's not even close. Senheisers are far too hot, so unless you've got a weak voice or are trying to catch soft voices, they are harsh. If you are trying to catch normal, clear, articulate vocals and translate that signal, whether at low or high volumes, to an audience, this is THE microphone. I even prefer this microphone over their more expensive sister the OM7. It's just a more even response across platforms. This microphone will DO IT ALL! Whether you are using this mic for lead vocals, backup vocals, instruments, or overhead in rooms with 50 or 500 people your response is consistent and clear. Talking, singing, screaming and falsetto all come out clean and articulate. What you sing or put through comes out perfectly on the other side, so it'd better be good. Any decent singer will know the difference. I'm not too particular about my instrument mics, though I typically use SM57s, but these are "must have" vocal microphones. If you are a professional, using SM58s this microphone is a game changer for you. Get these mics NOW! ... More

Okay, so I read all the reviews. I also own a few other mics. SM 57's, SM 58's, and an EV(forgot the exact model, and I don't have the mic with me) I had been using a Shure SM58 for practices and live performances. I'm in a stoner rock band, and we play pretty loud. I wanted something that would have less feedback, and cut through more. I purchased this mic, and used it at my next practice. Absolutely amazing! No feedback, tons of gain, and cuts right through the mix. A few days after we played a gig. They had a SM58 for me to use on the stage. I asked if we could use my mic, and they said yes. I used it, and it was awesome! I could hear my vocals perfectly, and so could the crowd. The sound guy said he was fooling around before we started playing, and he was able to turn the gain on his system all the way up without any feedback whatsoever. He told me he could of given me tons more volume if I needed it while we were playing. However, I didn't need it. Anyway, long story short. Get this mic. Awesome!!! ... More

I've used this mic for some years now, as a performer and sound tech. From the perfomer point of view, it's construct is very sturdy. I've dropped it a couple of times and it didn't dent up as my Shure 58 did. Only my $300 condencer mic did better in reproducing my vocals. No distortion on high sound pressure levels and the only time it has feedbacked, was when it was pointed directly at the monitor. I have had vocalists come in front of the main stacks and no problem, lay on the floor...no problem, stand on tables..no problem...all voice and very minimum handling noise. For the money this is worth every penny. It's the AK-47 of professional microphones. ... More

I bought this mic a few months ago and have used it alot. As it says, it does NOT distort or feedback at high sound pressure levels at all. It does not pop or pickup much unwanted noise which is great for recording. I have used it as a vocal as well as acoustic and amplifier mic. It is great for both. It rejects most noise that isn't right on it, so once again, GREAT for recording. I would recommend this to ANYONE.

For guitar and vox, great!

Good package for a performing guitarist/singer. Mics work well together to create a good balanced mix. I-5 works great on snare and toms, too. Has a lot more body than the famous 57. OM5 has very good feedback rejection. Currently using them for live with a mackie PA for the band and a bose system for solo. Also recording with the I-5 and very happy with the results.

Between the Shure SM58 and this, do not hesitate to spend the extra $60 on this one. I bought one of this Audix OM-5 mics and loved it so much that I end up getting another one for the backing vocals. It deals with feedback very well and it's much more clear than the Shure SM58. The only thing that Shure is better on is the resistance, if you drop it or bang it. But mics were not made to be dropped, so just be careful and the Audix will last you forever.

the OM5 is a decent sounding dynamic mic with very good off axis rejection that helps to control signal bleed and feedback. it's great mic for loud stages or reducing bleed in recording situations. the polar pattern is tight so you literally have to stay right on top of the mic to keep vocal levels consistent. it takes a bit of getting used to if you play an instrument and move around a lot on stage.

I started with old reliable SM 58 and went to Audix OM2 and found them equal. Then when I found Bonnie R using a OM5 I got it for my female singers, but you have to teach the user they need to almost kiss the mic. So I discovered it makes a great drummers mic. It cuts out non vocal bleed. It almost rivals my Crown CM 301a which stops all bleeds
