AF Speed lock on is INSTANT!

Dec 17, 2017

I have not shot with an A9 nor any other G or GM lens in the FE line. So I can't compare. I do own teh 50mm FE 1.4 lens which is amazing in its own right. I have recently returned to Sony after a three year hiatus were I had the original and have returned after just buying the A7R3. I am just blown away by both the camera and this 24-105. This lens focuses instantly. Locks on instantly! non of the jitter you can get with mirrorless cameras. (Im l... Show More

satisfied with performance

Jul 24, 2018

I rate this lens a "5" because it's a great lens and all the negatives were known before buying it. Negatives are: heavy lens and a subtle laxity to focus. The focus slowness may just be an unfairly judged perception when photographing constantly squirming children. For the lens, packaging / protection were adequate with enough dunnage/ bagging to assure a spotless product when opening. Lens was clean / pristine / excellent apparent wor... Show More

Prime Cut...

Dec 19, 2017

Finally...a great mid-range zoom for the Sony A7 series cameras. Better by miles than the SonyZeiss 24-70 which is mediocre at best. I tried it and sent it back after two weeks--with great thanks for B&H's return policy. The Leica R Vario Elmar 35-70 is an excellent lens but all manual...which really isn't much fun...and the focal range wasn't broad enough for me...and the Leica M Tri-Elmar 28-35-50, is also excellent, beautiful, and wonderful... Fantastic almost do it all lens!

Jan 29, 2018

I see some reviews here that say this lens is too large and heavy. I don't get it!!? Yeah it's not tiny, but I'd say it's actually kind of smallish and balances EXTREMELY well on my A7RIII and VERY light weight vs say the 2.8 GM 24-70 zoom which I owned prior, plus lots smaller. The IQ is fantastic IMO, and it is tack sharp at all focal lengths. Almost no CA, and it feels very well made. Bokeh of course is subjective ,BUT the circles and or blur ... Show More

Great all arounder

May 22, 2018

I bought this lens for travel and run and gunning type shoots. I appreciate the greater range and lighter weight than its cousin the 28-70 2.8 GM- which I also own (and love). Paired with the A7R3, I do not find thef4 of this lens to be a major hindrance, given the low light and in-camerastabilization capabilities of the camera, especially when coupled with the OSS feature of the lens. The lens produces sharp, well-exposed images and compares wel... Show More

Excellent Zoom Lens!

Jan 16, 2019

Ive been shooting since I was a teenager and used many different cameras and lenses of pro quality. I always felt Canon L lenses were top notch and they are that, in fact. Recently switched to Sony mirrorless for smaller form factor and weight, and I have always been a prime guy. Ive tried several Sony and Zeuss lenses both prime and zoom. Specifically, the Zeiss 35 2.8 get great reviews, but I found CAs too high for that lens. Also Sony primes... Show More

Sharp. Fast Enough. Best 24-105 on the market

Jul 22, 2018

I waited, and waited to be able to grab this lens as soon is it either came back in stock or show up used. I was lucky enough to get a MINT and used from B&H. It's better than fair indoors but if you're a pro that needs those extra stops of light. It's tack sharp, incredibly sharp on my A7riii. That extra reach makes a huge difference in many different situations (portrait, nature, landscape pretty much everything). Although not sold as macro len... Show More

The best zoom available covering this range

Jan 17, 2018

I've always enjoyed having a lens that covers 24-105 or 24-120 but in the past I chose to supplement those lenses with either primes or zooms covering a smaller range for landscape photography and situations that exposed the weaknesses of the 24-105 and 24-120 lenses. The Sony 24-105 is the first lens I've used that is consistent across the range and consistent from the center to the edges and corners. There are some differences in performance at... Show More

Perfect All-In-One

Nov 25, 2019

This is the first Sony lens I purchased for my A7R3 and I keep it on my camera almost all the time. The focal length has great range and allows you to get decently wide landscape shots at 24mm and a relatively powerful zoom at 105mm. The constant f4 aperture is a huge feature and allows for some nice bokeh and depth of field at further focal lengths, especially at 105. This lens is very sharp edge to edge and is my go-to lens for hiking as I can ... Show More

Great lens until I dropped it!

Dec 21, 2018

This is my favorite walking around lens! With the 12-24, this lens, and the new 100-400, there is full coverage of the zoom range. A fast wide-angle prime and a macro lens fills out the camera bag for a long trip. I do mostly nature photos--landscape, wildlife, and flowers. I noticed the one-star rating with the focus problem. When I dropped the lens at Jackson Falls on the Nachez Trace Parkway, it apparently damaged the barrel and created an au... Show More

Light, walkable, quick and accurate AF, "use anywhere lens"

Mar 20, 2018

I recently am a convert to the Sony line of cameras and lenses. I had a Canon 24-105 f4L before on my old setup and picked this lens up as soon as I got my A7RIII. I am very happy with the accurate AF, light and compact form factor, quiet AF, and OSS in low light shots. This complements my 12-24 f/4G lens I have as well. Some of the other reviews seem to not know how their Sony camera works (specifically with eye AF) as this lens absolutely work... Show More

Jul 9, 2018

I don't write reviews! crazy after all these yeas I'm writing my second to help my fellow image makers. Been using Nikons since 1968. Loved their stuff and their keeping compatibility in there lens mount. When Sony new 7 came out to lots of hoopla, gave it a try for weight saving and loved the IQ. Nikon 850 made me wonder just how much better the pixel increase would improve the IQ over my 810. But I new I wouldn't buy one because it was heavier ... Show More

Believe the Hype

Jun 13, 2018

It's as sharp as they say - almost like a prime. It performs incredibly well in low light with my A7ii. The OSS is so good, you can shoot at very low shutter speeds and still have a sharp picture. This makes up for not having f/2.8. The bokeh is lovely. The build is solid and the lens feels tough. It's actually a little heavier and larger than I expected, but I guess I've been spoiled by my featherweight 50mm and 28mm lenses. Really, It's sm... Show More

No advantages over the Canon 24-105 mm

Mar 14, 2018

Recently started migrating to Sony from Canon and this Sony is the third lens in the move. Physically both have almost identical dimensions and weight (both weight 1 pound 8.4 oz) with the Sony extending longer at the 105 mm position. The Sony has one focusing button that is lacking in the Canon. Image quality is mostly subjective and cannot perceive much difference between both. AF speed is about the same. Concerns with the Sony 24-105 are that... Show More

Using this lens on a Nikon Z6 and loving it!

Sep 1, 2019

I am mainly a Nikon shooter, and earlier this year I took the plunge and purchased the Nikon Z6 mirrorless camera along with the Nikon 24-70mm f4 kit zoom lens. During a recent vacation in Iceland, I shot many hundreds of photos with this combination, and although the results ultimately came out fine, it took a good bit of post-processing especially to achieve adequate sharpness of the images. As a result, I subsequently took a chance on the new ... Show More

SONY FE 24 - 105mm F4 G OSS lens

Jun 14, 2019

Wonderful walk about lens, to me its a chunky piece of glass, but with the GP-X1EM grip its a great combination. Very reassuring hold. The grip is a must have for heavier lens. Discounting that the grip has to be removed to replace the battery, and to load the camera on a tri / mono pod. I personally am quite ok with this. The lens is fast AF, quite, with on camera focus magnification and variable focus points. You can select AF / MF on lens swit... Show More

My favorite travel lens

Jun 5, 2019

This is my preferred lens for traveling and hiking. I also have the Tamron 28-75, but really found the extra 35mm of focal range incredibly useful for hiking and general use. The lens is sharp and has much better build quality. Weather resistance is also excellent, as I've taken it through multiple dusty and wet outings and even an insane pollen storm, and there's no sign of anything getting through. I love the colors that come out of this lens, ... Show More

Mixed feelings

Dec 19, 2017

I have mixed feelings about this lens. On one hand, it's pretty sharp ( especially in the center), have nice zoom and focusing rings, creates beautiful bokeh. On the other hand, focusing on my Sony A7 has been a nightmare, especially in low light. The lens is constantly hunting for a focus even when trying to focus on pretty contrasty objects.Even on a very bright sunny day I had a lot of hunting issues with this lens. Nice lens and range

Jan 22, 2019

I originally bought the the Sony 24-230mm for my Sony A7R3 because Im not a big fan of changibg lenses often. I liked the 24-105mm better because it is sharper throughout around the edges. Also much less vignetting at the 24mm setting. I would love a lens that gave me the IQ of the 24-105 in a wider zoom range with more telephoto and lighter weight but that is just not happening yet. I sent the 24-230 back to BH though I will miss the reach it ha... Show More

I was looking for a versatile lens for video and saw that this lens had just been released not too long ago. Of course, when camera gear is new its always smart to wait on it and check out as many reviews as possible over time before buying. Well, I didn't do that and I don't regret it whatsoever. Sharpness First

Oct 9, 2019

The Sony 24-105 f/4 G was created for the Sony Alpha 7R series and comes with nano-coatings and an aspheric component that allows it to show edge to edge sharpness when wide open - not to mention the total electronic integration with the Sony FE mount. Probably at this moment it is the best choice in this zoom range for a Sony Alpha 7R series camera - especially the very high res shots will blow away the competition. I bought this lens as I left for a 4 day commercial shoot after only testing it for a day - I was confident in my primes Incase this zoom started to let me down but I shot 90% on this lens. The G-master might be sharper, maybe, but for me the combo of size, balance with the A7r iii w/ grip and the little bit of extra reach at 105mm makes it an easy choice for me.
