Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens For Sony A

A Low Cost Super Wide Lens
I bought this lens for shooting stars and buildings. As this is a super wide lens and only cost several dollars, therefore, I will not compare it with those lenses which costs thousands of dollars. I tried this lens onto D3X directly and A7R via an adapter. Good things are, - It is built quite rigid, and focusing ring is also moving very smooth and with a long distance. - It is a manual focus lens, so, sometimes, you could get much accurate focus... Sharp, easy to use, great value.
I use this lens for night sky and landscape work. It is quite sharp and simple to use. At this focal length focus issues are minimal, but I do recommend memorizing some depth of field parameters for often used situations and a D of F app for your smart phone or pad is strongly advised. The build quality is quite good. The detents on the exposure ring are a welcome feature. There is no 'red dot' on the barrel for aligning the lens to the camera. L... Show More

Awesome prime!
Great for astrophotography which is the main reason I bought it due to the low COMA and CA. Amazing value for being such a well built glass for around $300; it's just almost unbeatable. Manual focus needs some practice to get right. It does not focus close up. As far as infinity focus, it can vary from glass and I would recommend you zoom in the maximum value in live view to a bright star and focus until you get a nice round star on the viewfinde... image falls flat.
The Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC shows promise, but falls well short in sharpness. Ive owned this lens for a year, using it on my Canon 5D mk IV, and also used the Nikon version before I switched to Canon. This lens is very capable of getting you some stellar shots, but issues with the focus distance make it a hassle to use (my infinity focus is around 2M). Great Value Full Frame Lens (Astro & Landscape Photography)
Image Quality The lens is very sharp with a few minor soft spots that can be easily corrected in post-production if you're a pixel peeper. If minor soft spots in the initial photo bother you then just skip to the 14-24mm Nikon F2.8, or equivalent, but chances are you were considering this lens because it is a BUDGET LENS. Build Quality The whole lens is quite tiny and built very sturdy. The manual focus ring moves perfect with one finger and inf... Show More

Amazingly sharp, but...
This lens is every bit as sharp on my Canon 6D as the reviews I've read suggested it would be, and well built as well. It compares very nicely to my TOKINA 12-24mm lens (though that lens only covers a full frame sensor from 18mm onward. Focusing is very much a challenge, even scale focusing is a challenge as there are no depth of field scales on the lens - technically astute readers will understand why there aren't. Fun lens!
I was going to give it just 4 stars because it is fully manual, but hey, for a lens that is, it deserves 5 stars. In fact, I like the fact that its focusing ring has distance in both feet and meters to guide you, which is very helpful when you're running and gunning. Tip: although I did some Googling and found a lens correction profile to use in LR, I find that using the Canon 14mmL profile works better. I bought this lens to do astrophotography ... Show More

Focusing/Focus Marker Issues
I heard great things about this lens' value and capabilities in regard to photographing the Milky Way and other night photography, but my version was terribly calibrated in regard to focus markers on the barrel. After some frustrating night photography excursions, I finally discovered that when turning the barrel in one direction, infinity was in focus at the 7' mark, however turning in the other direction, infinity focus was on the 2.5' mark. Great lens, but wide micro focus
I bought this lens mainly for night star shots but find myself experimenting with it the way one would use a normal lens. For wide angle it has, in my opinion, very little distortion of you choose your angles correctly, and when shooting raw is much easier to remove in post than you might think. My camera is a Nikon D60, and I find that pretty much every lens I own is a bit soft if not lit properly and getting that focus just right, and with a ma... Show More

Better than I thought...
When I decided to add the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 lens to the few lenses that I own, it was for one reason, astrophotography. I had to convince myself that the benefits of this lens outweighed the lose of auto focus and metering. To photograph at night, this lens is really good. It is everything I read about. I highly recommend it for astro/night photography. What I didn't take into consideration when researching the lens, was that it can be used for o... Show More

Couldn't use it
I read all the review from other users of this lens and thought it seemed like a pretty safe bet for my UWA shots. Little did i realize the manipulations I'd have to go through just to get a shot. For me focusing the lens through the view finder was out of the question, because at 14mm the subjects appeared too far away to achieve proper focus. I relied on hyper focal distance most of the time anyway. My biggest issue was composing shots in live ... Show More

5 stars for the price!
I got this lens because the Nikkor version was pretty steep in price, and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this focal length. Rokinon to the rescue! mere sub $400 ultra wide angle, that appears to be sharp sharp sharp all over. Manual focus only, but with my d750's and d800's, I had zero problem with the focus indicator, and it lands focus with some practice every time. Lens cap is well made and clips on to the lens very easily. Only bad part is th... Show More

Disappointed with sharpness...
I am shooting Milky Way photos, so I purchased the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 lens. I manually focus at night at f2.8, using Live View magnified on my Canon T3i. Initially I thought perhaps that I was not getting the focus right since I wear reading glasses. Then I used the hyperlocal distance and still sharpness at f2.8 was very soft. So to be sure, I shot extensive tests at home, well lit, at various distances from the subject, and using every f stop fr... Show More

solid lens... but not without flaws
there's a lot to like about this lens... and some things not to like first off, you can't beat the price and the 14mm wide angle on a full frame camera is a lot of fun to play around with. no worries about durability, the lens feels very solid however, it does have a few flaws (to be expected at this price point)... it needs to be stopped down to get optimal sharpness (a bit too soft for my tastes when shooting wide open). and the lens suffers fr... Excellent considering the price
I have tried out this new acquisition this morning and could not be more pleased. I have to admit, I was apprehensive in view of some example of this lens not being of the expected quality a new lens should have. My copy is sharp corner to corner, edge to edge. It is a bit different to use. The best I can describe: it's like using the lens with the preview button depressed at all times. So, wide open, I compose, then stop down for the depth of fi... Great combo with A99II. Absolutely love this lens.
I have had this lens since last 3 years now, and have shot interiors, nature and landscapes with this lens by paring with my Sony A500, A77II and now A99II. This lens is far sharper even in corners, has less distortion, and far better colors. This lens is sharp wide open in the center, and the f/2.8 allows you to get some perfectly acceptable bokeh for close up subjects, even though that is not the purpose of this lens. Go W-I-D-E
I picked this lens up for Astrophotography after reading so many positive reviews about it. But I have to say I am just having a ball with it during the daytime also. It puts a special cool spin on things. It has great color rendition even without the use of a polarizer. With the focus chip I notice that the focus green light in the viewfinder stays on through quite a range. At first I would focus somewhere in the center of the range that the lig... Show More

Nightscapes/Astrophotography
7 Dec 2016: I'm writing this review now because I was asked through email to do so, but I'll update when the exchange process is completed. Like many others, I bought this for nightscapes/astrophotography. My first copy ended up being decentered and I have sent it back for an exchange. Overall image was pretty soft at all focus distances. Right side of images were significantly out of focus compared to the rest of the image. I tested for a decent... Show More

This Lens Is So Good, It's Ridiculous!
Sure, it has (a bit) of mustache distortion, mild barrel distortion, and mild vignetting at large apertures, but all these are barely noticeable in most photography. And very much more expensive lenses can have these flaws as well. But there is strikingly little chromatic aberration, and at f8, remarkably sharp corner to corner images are possible, even enlarged to 13x19, using my a99II body. The lack of autofocus and auto aperture control are no... Show More

I mainly bought this lens for astrophotography, as it has received great reviews for that purpose. I haven't had the opportunity to take it out at night yet, but the shots I am getting during the day are great. Nice lens if you can get a good copy
First copy of this lens could not focus at infinity at f/2.8, and the right side of the picture was mush. B&H return policy is great, they paid shipping both ways and sent me another lens promptly. Second copy is much better. The lens is fairly lightweight, compared to the typical 14-24mm f/2.8 bricks and not much larger than a typical 18-55mm kit lens. Focus and aperture rings are smooth and positive. Moderately sharp across the whole frame, on ... Show More

Bought this lens for astrophotography, cityscapes, and landscapes. Previously had bought Rokinon's 24mm/f1.4 lens and had been very happy with it. Did not have any concern about the build quality. Testing the 14mm on a Canon 5DIII, the images were focus sharp, no noticeable vignetting no color shifting, etc. Bought the AE chip to avoid having to write down my exposure setting in the dark. Focus at infinity is about 1/3 of the way between the vert... Show More

Cant beat it for the price! Great astrophotography prime!
This is one glass that I primarily got for astrophotography due to its low coma. It also doubles as a really awesome landscape prime lens in your kit. Its light and small enough to fit in most bags. Manual focus is no issue since pretty much whatever you will shoot at 14mm will be so easy to focus at; you pretty much will most of the time shoot at infinity anyway. Excellent Street Photography
I use this lens on my instagram that is mainly street photography based. And this lens is perfect for capturing a lot into the frame at such a wide angle. The only tricky things are focusing for macro or portraits, in my opinion. Those require using the live view lcd screen for ... Show More
