I carried this tripod all over Europe for over three weeks and over 2000 photos, slung over my back. It is compact enough to easily carry, yet tall enough to comfortable use at 6'1. Had been told there was a plastic piece on this head but it was not 'cheesy'. It IS cheesy and it is the piece that holds the QR plate/camera! The Manfrotto logo and my years of expereince with Bogen/Manfrotto drew me in. This is a great Medium sized tripod. The four section is shorter when collapsed than the three section. It really is a great size when collapsed, and is a great height when extended. Use this for landscapes/studio. I've paired legs with 055 Mag Ball Head RC4 Quick Release for an extra sturdy combo. I was a little worried as when I first opened and extended the legs, they wouldn't remain tight when clamped. However, they provide a tightner tool (which attaches to the leg) to tighten down any clamps that need it. So make a mental note that tripod will probably will need adjusting first off. Long story short: This an extremely sturdy tripod that is versatile and very quick to adjust. The ability to adjust the center column to a horizontal position is extremely helpful for macro, or product photography. Also, the adjustable heights of this unit is a major plus. I originally bought a Manfrotto 294 with a panning head, then returned it for the 055 legs and this 322 head. This ball head with the joystick is a real pleasure to use. I'm an advanced amateur, and it is great that manfrotto makes professional gear at a realistic price point for people like me. Solid, sturdy & hefty!
This is a quality upgrade for me from a lightweight tripod. The build quality is quite good, But the expletives will fly if you have to carry it any distance. I find the leg locks are not finger eaters as some have mentioned but you have to switch hands to click the last lock which is slightly annoying. Very Nice, Easy to Use, Solid
I have this grip action ballhead on top of Manfrotto's 190XB - attached is Canon 50D and my largest lens is a Sigma 120-400mm. So far I have used it for bird and macro shots and has performed well in both. The ballhead is very easy to manipulate and seems to hold the configuration very well. Sturdier than I thought
Once you release the trigger the ballhead really holds... I have been playing around and it can definitely handle more than the 5 kilos from specs. On the other hand, if you have a grip camera (D3, D300 with grip, etc.) you will end up using it on the standard configuration, even if you're left handed (otherwise portrait buttons on the grip are upside down)... lightweight, but stable. Has a place on the collar to hang something on (I bring a mesh shopping bag to hang on it with whatever in it to weigh it down in windy conditions). The legs have clasps or as Manfrotto calls it: QPL leg locking system. I gave 2 stars as an average, I mean, 1 stars for the ball head and 3 stars for the tripod. Even a giottos of 15 bucks are more accurate and soft than this manfrotto head. The tripod is OK, but not in the Italian style level of perceptual quality as usual on manfrottos products. With this money go for a Vanguard or Oben, a lot superior in this price range... It has good and bad features
Rock solid tripod but it has several issues that need to be addressed. It uses a spring retaining clip washer to keep the center section from pulling out of the tripod. The retaining clip has fallen off and the whole center section then pulls away from the legs. It has happened twice now, once in the dark in Iceland and yesterday again in a studio. I owned the previous iteration of this tripod, the xprob, and lost it in the field. I was never quite satisfied w the xprob, it had all the bells and whistles but it wasn't as rigid as my 10 year old manfrotto tripod.
