Good, but not an Arca Swiss

Apr 12, 2015

First, to be explicit, I bought this ball head for use on a monopod, not a tripod. I have an Arca Swiss Z1 sp that I've been using on an Induro tripod for a few years now. In short, for the price, this is a very nice ball head with a quality build, but it would not be my only ball head. My review is based on what you get compared with the Z1 since I'm only familiar with that make/model. I recently acquired a monopod for some upcoming tourist-type... Show More

Incredible Quality - Price/Value Ratio

Mar 14, 2014

I can't say how pleased I am with this ball head. I very nearly spend twice this on a well know and loved head. As many of you the DP Review swayed me. I figured with B&H's fantastic return policy - if I wasn't delighted I'd return it. You couldn't pry this out of my hands now! First, the name is misleading - it's not a 40mm ball as you'd think at this price! It's 54mm, and the thing is an absolute beast! This is truly full size - so do be aware.... Show More

Very solid product and smooth action

Apr 5, 2017

This ball head is solid. For example today I took a macro with a set of three extension tubes, a Canon 2x Mk3, and a 100L Macro 2.8. This is quite a long lens setup and I don't have a mount for the lens (at least not yet) so I connected all these using a RRS L bracket on the camera. There was almost no shake at all and once I was solidly on the shutter button, there was no shake. With my old tripod head there is no way I could have taken a photo ... Show More

A+ Quality, Fit and Finish... and BIG

Aug 1, 2017

The fit and finish has the same appearance and luxurious feel of my Really Right Stuff accessories. The Surui arca-style clamp works perfectly with my RRS Nikon camera plate. I am delighted with the quality. The ball movement has the same feel of high quality. Locking the ball requires very little tension of the locking knob. The panning base has a thick, viscous motion. This is not suitable for fast panning, but works well for precision slow mov... Show More

Excellent Choice

Apr 2, 2019

I recently purchased the Sirui K-40 to replace the Pan & Tilt head that came with my tripod Ive had for some time. The tripod is sturdy, but the head was so imprecise if aiming at a small target. It was difficult to get it right. After reading all the great reviews on the K-40, I decided to give it a try and Im glad I did. While the K-40s 77 lb. rating was a bit of overkill for my equipment, that 2+ inch ball contributes to the smooth, dependable... Show More

Excellent Value

Feb 23, 2015

I have mounted this ballhead on an Induro AT313. My travel tripod is a sirui and I have been very pleased with it so far, so after extensive research, I decided to go with this K40. The build quality seems to be on par with heads that cost at least twice as much. Everything about it is rock solid. I run with a gripped 7d and 70-200 f/4 and it is completely stable; not the heaviest setup and I know this leg/head combo is overkill for it, but I pla... Show More

Best Ballhead for the Money!

Aug 1, 2015

Several years ago I bought a Really Right Stuff BH-40 ballhead because I read so many great reviews about it. However, I noticed when I took shots of things that were up high, such as birds, the moon for example, with a 200mm f2.8, or a 300 mm zoom, the ballhead would drift or sag! This became very time consuming and frustrating! I read several reviews of this Sirui ballhead and decided to try it. I'm very glad I did. It is very well built and fe... Show More

For Heavier Weights... Not Quite For A Few Reasons

Nov 17, 2016

This is a good bang for the buck ball head for weights well under the specified 77.1lbs. I have a couple of specific uses that I need it to perform for: 1. It must be able to happily hold a 400mm 2.8 with my d810 and grip. I doesn't. Both the plate and ball head drift don't work for me. The plate is a lighter weight Arca-Swiss style plate the lacks heft and isn't grippy enough and the ball sags a bit after setting and tightening. I want zero drif... Show More

K-40X Ball Head

Jan 11, 2017

The K-40X is a great ball head; I use it primarily with my Sigma 150-500 mm lens on my 7D Mark II with battery grip pack. My other heads have handles that tend to get in the way or caught on something too many times which I do not experience with the knobs on the K-40X head. The head came with one Sirui TY-70X quick connector and I order three of another brand that were listed as compatible with the K-40X head, but at half the cost (for use on an... Show More

Well made ball head

Feb 27, 2015

I have an Induro AT413 tripod and on it I had a Vanguard ball head. The vanguard was small and with a big lens had some serious creep. I read the reviews about this head and a lot said it was large. Well let me tell you they're right. It sits on the tripod real nice and won't move. I like the fact that I have one knob to adjust the tension and on for panning. I also like the knob to adjust the camera plate. One thing I noticed is if you put the c... Show More

Excellent Ball Head

May 15, 2018

I got the Sirui on the recommendation from a knowledgable B&H salesperson. He was spot on. I was replacing a tripod and ball head that was far too weak for a Nikon D750 and the heavy Nikkor 200-500 zoom. I was thinking of trying a tilt and zoom head to correct problems with the ball I had, but the problem was the light ball. The strong Sirui really controls the load. I have the 77 pound capacity Sirui, and I can microadjust the tension fo... Show More

Very Happy with My Sirui K-40x

Jun 13, 2014

I have been wanting a tripod and ball head for some time. Being new to photography, I really did not know what I wanted or needed. I read all the reviews of all the ball heads out there. I decided on the Sirui K-40x because of the reviews I read and basically a gut-feeling I had about this product. I am very happy with my Sirui K-40x. It is very smooth to move around with my equipment (Nikon D7100/70-300 zoom). The workmanship of this product is ... Show More

Extraordinary Quality and Stability, Great Value

Dec 17, 2015

The Sirui K-40X Ball Head simply does everything right. It is rock solid, stabile, strong, and simple. It compares quite favorably with the Induro BH line, because of its smoother pan function and the absence of a separate tension control knob. Th Sirui incorporates the tension control into the main ball tensioner, eliminating a constant source of confusion and complication on the Induro design. With just a BIG ball tension knob and a small Pan k... Show More

Excellent product, I would buy again.

Dec 24, 2015

Excellent head which I use on a recently purchased Vanguard Auctus 283CT. Seems like a very good combination if you need a very sturdy ball head. This is my third Sirui head and I have not been disappointed with any of them. They are very nicely finished, very smooth and solid. The K-30 I use on my old carbon fiber Velbon probably was sturdy enough but the K-40 is even more solid if a bit heavy. I mount them using Velbon magnesium quick releases ... Show More

Great Value

I've shopped around for different Ball Heads and the price/value for the K-40x is the best. There are many this size at a higher price (up to 3x). It is extremely well built, smooth and user friendly. I'm about 5'7 tall, when it is mounted on top of my new Sirui T-2205X tripod, the viewfinder is about 2 lower than my eye level and if I stand on my tip toes, I can still see the top Display on my camera. Solid Head, Solid Value

This ball head is built like a tank with smooth action and solid locking mechanisms. I have no problem using this with a Nikon 300mm f/4 D (heavy lens) and a full frame DSLR. The main locking mechanism is sized just about right and easily locks the head without any drift. I also use the RRS BH-55 and would put this on par with that head, though I do believe the RRS head locks a little more emphatically (may just need to adjust my Sirui head). Giv... Show More

Grown-up tripod head at a great price

Feb 6, 2014

I finally broke down and bought a real grown-up tripod head. This was rated in a recent DPReview as best value and I couldn't agree more. It's plenty big enough to hold my Nikon D7100 with 18-300mm lens securely. The knob adjustments work very well and I'm excited to finally have a pan option with a ball head. The head came with a plate and that seems to work fine. The security lock looks to be a lot better and should last longer than and shouldn't wear out like my last one. Yes, it's not a Markins or other top maker, but I think it's well made and a good buy for a lot less money.

Sirui k-40x ball head

Nov 27, 2015

I have not used this a great deal so far, beyond setting it up with a Nikon D300 and 16-85 mm lens. The setup went extremely well, and the ballhead seems exceptionally well made. I relied on a review by dpreview and some comments from an@ reviewer all were positive, accurate, and helpful. I have it mounted on a Bogen 3020 tripod I purchased in the 80s, but has served well (although somewhat weighty). The Sirui ballhead seems an excellent companion, and I am most happy wiith the purchase and service from B&H good product and good, efficient service

Does what it should

Mar 9, 2015

I was in need of an Arca style tripod head for a Kirk L-bracket. This one got great reviews & was much more reasonably priced than the other one's I was looking into. It went easily on to my Manfrotto tripod & holds my Nikon D700 & the 28-300mm Nikkor zoom lens without issue. So far everything moves smoothly. Small issue negative is that the level is a little hard to see. I personally have to get use to the weight of it, getting the friction set just right & placing the tilt opening between two legs when shooting down. Now only time will tell.

A rare find!

Mar 22, 2015

This is an amazing ballhead. I had been using a Kirk BH-3 but it was not sturdy enough for my Nikon D-800 with 70-200 f/2.8. This Sirui K-40x does the job smartly. After upgrading to a new Gitzo GT2542 tripod, an expensive BH-55 was not in the budget. No matter, I think this Sirui is just fine. You can hang a cow of of this thing! I discovered this ballhead on dpreview.com, they did a comparison of the big ballheads and rated this one higher than the RRS. You can't go wrong with this one. I'm going to get a smaller Sirui for hiking.
