Fast & Sharp - Worth the Price

Jan 4, 2011

Came in right on time for Christmas family and friends group photos. Half of the hand-held shots came out very sharp at f-stop 2.0 - a high percentage by any standard. They are as sharp as the best photos taken with my Sony 50mm f1.4 - without having to get too close to the subject.I will need to upgrade my APS-C sized Minolta 7D to a full frame such as the A850 - as I had to step back into the next room with the 1.5x factor on the focal distance on a APS sensor.Great lense - fast & sharp! All other user's reviews checked out very well.

One of The Best Portrait Lenses made

Dec 30, 2010

I am a professional photographer for nearly 25 years. I have used many portrait lenses of different manufacturers. I bought my Sony Alpha a850 last year along with Zeiss 135mm, f/1.8, ZA. I needed a shorter lens to be used in my studio or outdoor when working in tighter places. I chose Sony's 85mm f/1.4 and must say that without any hesitations it is absolutely one of the best portrait lenses I have ever owned. It will not disappoint anyone.

Dream Glass!

Sep 13, 2010

This is my first professional, full frame lens purchase and I could not be more thrilled to have it! I recently used this lens to photograph a very fast 1 year old for his portrait session and fell in love (needless to say, I was doing a lot of running). Not only did I get the shots I needed but they were sharp, clear and bright. The bokeh is gorgeous and the color output is beautiful. This will be my new workhorse lens for all my outdoor portraits (along with my 50mm 1.4 of course!).

The Best

Aug 25, 2010

The best! I needed a lens for low-light situations (specifically inside of a large church) and this fits the bill exactly. I used to have to take shots at f5.6 ISO2000 1/30 and then play with them a great deal in post-editing. Now I can use f1.4 ISO800 and 1/60 - 1/125. I love it! Add to that the fact that the images are some of the sharpest I have seen and you have a great lens. A bit pricey but worth it to me.

Top Quality Lens

Aug 8, 2010

This lens lives up to all the good reviews about this lens on the internet already. Very sharp, wonderful bokeh. I noticed some CA when @ 1.4 in a very bright location. I would imagine this is to be excepted with any lens however in such a location.

I LOVE this lens!

Jun 22, 2010

There is an almost mystical quality you get with this lens when shooting portraits that astonished me - even through the compromised viewfinder of my A350 I knew instantly that I had made a good choice. You will not be dissapointed!

My Best, Most Perfect Lens, Ever!

May 5, 2010

I recently returned to portrait photography -- a passion of mine for the past 20 years. I was excited enough just with my legendary Rokkor 58mm f1.2 until I bought this lens. I was just amazed at the quality of the crisp, sharp images that dance, literally dance on the screen. There's a quality to shots taken with this lens that I haven't seen in my shots ever. It's a bit heavy on my A850 but I've added a hand-grip along with the neck strap to make sure I don't drop the whole deal. The lens is marvelous guys, you'll know what I mean when you use it yourself. Get it if you can swing the price.

This is the best lens I've ever owned to

Oct 5, 2009

I use this 85mm on my Alpha 850 and it is this sharpest, clearest and fastest lens I own. It is very heavy but it's very well built and easy to manual focus. I have not had a problem with its auto-focusing but it's not as fast as my 28mm when it comes to focusing speed. I cannot really say anything that has not been said before but if you want the best 85mm for a 850 or 900 this is the one. I was a little jaded about lenses that carry well known ... Show More

WORTH THE COST

Nov 22, 2008

I ordered this lens due to the reviews here and on other forums. It was definately worth the cost. On the A-700 it is well balanced and focuses fast even in low light. As far as build quality it is built like a tank.

A MUST HAVE LENS!!!

Nov 11, 2008

This lens is so good it's rarely off my camera. In fact I'm carrying around a second body just because I hate being parted with it. The colour and bokeh are beautiful. I have several lenses but this is one of my favourites. It's a little heavy after carrying it around all day but that's because it's so well built. I use it on my A700 and carry a Zoom & smaller prime on an A350. I am so impressed by it I'm now considering the Zeiss Zoom.

Superb Glass

Jul 30, 2008

This lens lives up to the reputation of Carl Zeiss. It delivers crisp, sharp images, and has a large enough aperture to shoot successfully in low light. This is especially important to me, since I eschew flash altogether for my own work, and use it only as a last, desperate resort for commercial work. The focal length of this lens makes it useful for portraiture, as well as for scenic images where a slight telephoto boost is in order.

Reality as good as perception....

Feb 26, 2008

I bought the lens to take pictures of my grandchildren than over time would be treasured more than just a snapshot. It certainly has done that already, but I have found that other uses outside for such things as flowers or even light duty landscapes make this lens very special. Carl Zeiss lenses are perceived as special and in this case reality is no less than what perception has labeled it.

The lens for photographing people

Apr 13, 2007

If you have never used this lens, you are missing out on the best. If you have used this lens, you understand why I moved to the Sony Alpha series cameras. I used earlier versions of this lens on Slr film cameras. It was a treasure. When I moved to digital, i missed this lens for photographing people. In the studio or in low light, this lens produces images that other lens makers try to copy, but fail. It is impressive. A brilliant diamond in the Sony lens collection. Problems Encountered: None. Previous Equivalent Items Owned: Rollei, Contax, Hassy, and Nikon portrait lenses
