t'aint bad!

i'd like to think of myself as a computer tech pro - hah, so who doesn't these days, right? what's interesting here is my 40+ yrs in the industry. started with fixing mainframes, to programming them, the pcs and now for my last harrah, i'm a software detective.back in the day, when i did hw, i was a fixer as opposed to the designer / engineer type. still there was a lot to learn when using an oscilloscope to troubleshoot problems. so with that as... FAST beyond my WILDEST EXPECTATIONS !

Apr 7, 2014

It's crazy fast in spite of: My old EVGA (AMD) motherboard does not support AHCI and it also has an NVIDIA chipset (memory controller) which is not supported by Samsung's Magician software so I can't enable the RAPID mode whereby the reads and writes are cached through system RAM, thereby speeding up the total throughput to at least double the specs' very numbers. To add further insult to injury my old motherboard's SATA controller is only SATA-2... Show More

Until the 850 (v-nand) and 845 (beefy higher endurance version of the 840) lines come out, I would pick these over any of the other brands/models (even if say an ocz or crucial drive were 10/20usd cheaper for the same capacity, they just wont last as long not to mention tool/app wise they fall short), these simply have a longer life span shown with endurance testing (overall lifespan via writes), and now with Rapid 2.0 (via magician 4.4), they ju... Great 500GB SSD

Oct 10, 2014

Top Quality, FAST, Easy to Install, Reliable, Excellent Price. I'm using several EVO SSD of each popular capacity (250GB, 500GB, 1TB), for my Desktop PCs and my laptops. I use 500GB for boot drive on my Desktops. I use 1TB for data only, and 250 for boot drive on my laptop (with data on an external drive). I've had no issues with the drives. They're solid state, so now the ONLY noise is the fan on my video card in one of my desktops. If you have ... Show More

Had Trouble trying to update the firmware initially on my iMac- for some reason I couldn't do it ,even within Bootcamp using samsung's included program. Anyways, decided to skip the firmware upgrade as it was becoming a fiasco. I have the 840 Evo 500gb connected to the Seagate Thunderbolt Adapter ( STAE133) which sells on B&H cheaper than anywhere else currently. I'm comfortable enough on a computer to upgrade memory but that's about it for me. I got it in my head that I wanted to upgrade my HDD to an SSD. Needless to say after I plunged in to spending $250 on a 500GB SSD I lost sleep fearing I would mess up my computer somehow. It was a breeze. You do need a SATA/USB cable to migrate. I bought one on * for less than $10. All you have to do is install the included migration and magician software, plug the... Show More

Samsung Evo 840 SSDs can be reset.

Apr 5, 2014

Weaver in San Diego said that the Samsung 840 EVO did not provide a way to reset the Drive to its initial or uninstalled state after using the Samsung Magician. In fact, the magician software includes a Secure Erase option that will create a Linux boot CD/DVD that is quick & simple enough to run that will erase the drive and then leave it in the initial or uninstalled state. This is useful if the drive is being moved to a different machine and I ... Show More

I was ready to replace my 5-year old Toshiba Tecra notebook computer with a new Core i7 laptop. But since the new Windows 8.1 machines out there are still too new and untested, I decided to try upgrading the old machine. I started by replacing the original 200gb SATA HDD with this Samsung 500gb SSD. I was expectintg some disk access improvement. But to my surprise, the overall performance jumped dramatically. A Snappy Upgrade

Nov 12, 2013

Apple recently announced their new MacBook Pro's as well as their new Mac Pro Tower. I wanted both but would prefer to have a maxed out Mac Pro than a new laptop at this very moment so I decided to make a small upgrade on my current laptop. I bought this SSD for my 2010 MacBook Pro and it has made a world of difference. My computer boots up from cold to ready to go in 10-11 seconds flat. The new SSD booted up like a champ in unbelievable speed. Super quick and totally love it. 500MB Read/ 490MB Write! Ditch platters!

Dec 13, 2013

SSDs are the future, and you should own one today. This is the third SSD I've purchased (830 256GB and a 120 EVO being the other) and EVO comes at a great price/performance ratio for Samsung SSDS, which are a little more expensive than other SSDs, but are wholly more reliable. With the EVO, you get the great Read speeds of all Samsung 840 SSDs (840, Evo, or Pro), and great Write speeds. They trail the Pro's write speeds, but blow away the 830 reg... Show More

New life into an older MacBook Pro

Wow! I replaced the existing 5400 RPM 500GB drive in my mid-2010 MacBook Pro (13) with this SSD and now my laptop is like a new computer! It just goes to show how much of the computing experience relies an disk access because all of my programs not only load faster but just seem to run faster. I used to get frustrated scrolling through photos in iPhoto but not anymore. My huge photo library is now very accessible. It was fairly painless replacing... Show More

Less Performance Than Claimed

Dec 26, 2013

This drive is significantly slower than Samsung claims! With firmware upgrade and No Samsung Magician optimization, Seq reads were 405 and seq writes were 394. After optimizations these figures were diminished and could not be improved without significant performance hit to read speed. Samsung Magician has no return or restore or undo button and once run, your SSD performance is likely to be lower. Samsung can increase write speed significantly w... Show More

I've built a replacement OS (Fedora 20) on the SSD and will shortly replace the original drive on my MacBook Pro (15 6,2 model). Dec 16, 2013

So far, the SSD has breathed new life into my old 2008 iMac. I was considering a new iMac, but other than running slowly and making a lot of HD noise, there was nothing wrong with my old 24 iMac. With the SSD the old thing runs substantially cooler, quieter, and FASTER. I have my iTunes and iPhoto library on an external HD and TimeMachine backs up both. We'll see about the durability of the SSD, but with a 3 year warranty, it appears to be the sa... Show More

Samsung Nails the Migration Anxiety

Jan 14, 2014

Samsung has absolutely nailed the migration anxiety when it comes to switching to a SSD. And while my older system does not leverage all of the speed that the SSD offers, I had no issues booting up the SSD, updating its firmware and then using the Migration Application that comes with it to port the Windows 7 operating system onto it. The installation documentation was incredibly straight forward, but then installation is simple today. Take out the old one and put in the new one, or just add to an available connection. Keep in mind, your machine may not have an available power and/or data connection. Verify what you need before buying. The disk is a leader for main stream users, both incredibly priced and high end performance. I do a lot of data intensive work on my workstation and this drive has served me well in the time that I've had it.

Dec 9, 2013

Fast stable drive. Good price per GB. Samsung software could not clone smaller OCZ 240 GB SSD over to Samsung drive. It went all the way to 100% and then errored out (I tried several times). Luckily I have a copy of Paragon OS Migrate and it copied my OCZ 240 SSD onto the Samsung first time with no problems. I have had the drive running for several weeks without incident. Samsung has its own optimization software which appears to work fine. I would recommend this drive.

Jumping from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD is almost night and day in terms of load time and performance. After all the procedural upgrades I put into my gaming PC, I didn't realize till now the limiting factor was my hard drive. So deciding to splurge and do a clone of my C: drive later, it makes me appreciate what I dropped into my computer now.
