OWC / Other World Computing 2TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive

So far so good but noisy. Great drive for legacy systems.
I am a professional videographer and editor and my editing system is set up so I can fly effortlessly on it. However, because some of my peripherals are supported by older OS it is difficult to find external drives that are supported by an older OS as well as still have FW800 ports. OWC ticked both boxes so I bought an 8TB version hoping that it will have enough space to last a couple of years. I just finished editing a 2-month editing project w... Show More

Repairs needed on the 3TBs
Our company has been using OWC for storage, editing and transfer for years now and overall, they have been very reliable! However, we have noticed a trend with the 3TB in particular. After just a year of usage, the drive is prompting us that it can't repair the disc and that it must be re-formatted. Luckily everything is backed up elsewhere but it's still a scary thought. This is the 3rd or 4th time these 3TB drives have given us problems on a sh... Show More

Great Hard Drive for Video Editing
I use this hard drive for video editing, and really, it has all what I could expect from a hard drive for that. It's big capacity allows me to work without worrying of data storage for at least a year, it is fast, and it can be connected either through USB 3 (which my computer doesn't have) or Firewire. No Thunderball, but I don't find it necessary for what I do. The only thing is that it is, like any big important hard drive, a little heavy and ... Show More

Solid performer
I use this as a scratch disk for 1080p HD video editing using a USB3 connection. Great performer for the price. I have purchased 4 of these over the years, and use them very heavily. I had 1 drive fail after 3 years of heavy use. However, no external HDD drive will last forever when used heavily for such a demanding application as video editing, so backups are common sense. Before switching to OWC I had used Lacie drives, but found the failure ra... Show More

Works just fine, but VERY loud
Ive had this drive running as a video storage drive, a partitioned CCC backup drive, and a myriad of other configurations in the time Ive owned it, and it works just fine - fast and reliable thus far. However, out of the box it makes the very irritating grinding sound typical of HDD drives reading data, but at an very noticeable volume and almost constantly when reading or writing anything at all. Ive used HDDs internally and externally before that are nowhere near the volume this thing is. So just be aware when you buy that in a quiet environment this is unusable.

The only hard drive brand I trust
I've been exclusively using OWC for the past 7 years, after bad experiences with retail store brands like Seagate and others. It's also the only hard drive we use at the post-production facility I work at. We've had one problem in 7 years with over 300 hard drives, and OWC promptly sent us a replacement for our bad drive. I am very loyal to this brand and have never been let down. I use them personally on a PC and professionally in our post house on a Mac. Neither have given me ANY problems.

Replacement Drive
This is a replacement for a WD drive that recently failed - about two months past the warranty. It's a little bit bigger than the WD and the Lacie drive that I have but that's not a big deal because it's parked on my desktop as opposed to a portable drive. Using it for my main backup drive and so far everything is fine. It comes with it's own software to format it, which I used instead of Disk Utility on the mac.

Seems to work as designed
This drive appears to be a quality drive. The packaging is good, the drive enclosure sturdy with all the necessary connections. I use drive for system backups, the drive is not meant to be left on all the time (no fan) but it does have nice aluminium enclosure to transfer heat. I have no regrets spending a few bucks more to obtain a more dependable backup drive.

Great for freelance work
I use this hard-drive for all of my freelance recording sessions. It's possible to run entire sessions off this external and saves hours of time transferring files. Plenty of space, reasonable price, and reliable (but don't forget to make a backup anyway). A bit of a pain to carry around but worth it in any environment with shared computers.

Works well - lots of port options! Doesn't sleep!
Been using these to record video files from camera through laptop! Always happy, plenty of port types, and also DOES NOT FALL ASLEEP -- which is a big deal when live on location -- other drives fall asleep and when you hit record on laptop it has to wake up -- This Mecury drive is always ready...

Good value solid drive
This is the second OWC drive I've purchased. The first one had a processor problem and was replaced with little theater. The one I just got is running smoothly. Solid hardware. I used to be a G-Tech user, but since they were bought by Hitachi, not so good. These OWC drives are better

OWC hard drives work great for me
Have had major issues with Gdrives and their customer service was extremely poor with several drives I bought from them that kept locking up. Have since moved all my drives to OWC drives and they have been great. Their customer service has been great too so far.

Very faster data rate!
I bought this to add storage and disk space for video editing. I was amazed at how fast this drives data transfer rate is compared to what I had been using. It has sped up my editing greatly. Will happily buy another when I need more external disk space.

Video editing
Just like other OWC drives, it is solidly built and performs excellently. Installation was easy with win 10 prox64 using the supplied software on the drive. It performs with no dropped frames for video editing with Premiere Pro cc2018

Exactly What I Needed
I'm using this for a Timeline Back-up Drive on my MacPro Desktop machine and it quietly in the background does exactly what it's supposed to do. Connection and set-up were very easy. Construction feels and looks solid.
