Nearly Indestructible!

Like Paul K said, there are many of these mics still in use after decades of use & abuse. I used the same one for over 15 years of run and gun in the rain, snow, & humidity. A reporter left mine in the grass while covering a barn fire and it was run over by a county fire truck. We pulled it out of the dirt and it broke the mic flag, but the mic itself didn't even flinch. We had 9 photogs at one point and they did misplace a few, but I only remember having to replace 1 mic that was damaged in the line of duty. You will need a foam windscreen if you're outdoors in anything more than a light breeze, but that's true of most any mic out there. Yes, there are better sounding mics out there, but this model is quite passable for local TV news gathering. But I really can't think of any mic as durable as the 635A. ... More
Classic field interview mic gets the job done

I ordered this microphone because it is the acknowledged best tool for field interviews. It is a known baseline quantity for frequency response, durability and suitability and has been for more than 40 years. It really is called The Hammer for a reason; it won't fail in the field even under abuse. Stick this mic under the chin of the interview subject and you will get the interview recorded for broadcast. You will get the get and come home with the goods, and that's what it is all about for non-repeatable actualities that can be heard and understood on air.

I recorded my vocal with dry and with slapback and it sounded throwback and warm. Really didn't have to eq, no low end or super bright, just the right frequency with enough midrange/ lows and highs. It sounded even better recording acoustic guitar. I have a 60's Gibson Lg-1 and all I can say is the recording sounded like the guitar! But the way my ears hear it. Midrange/ no boomy lowend and no plucky harsh sounds with a pick. Can't wait to try it out as an overhead for drums. FYI, my recording set up is a basic/ humble set up with no boutique pre's or high end interfaces...just a one channel mic pre (the jam v1) Auria and iPad Air 1st gen.Fantastic sounds from this mic. They call it the hammer for good reason! Very tough. It does look a little old fashioned in the fawn beige color (like old government furniture!) I was very surprised how short/thin it is when I opened the box. I have largish hands so even with the XLR connector, making itv longer, it is still short & feels tiny. I'd prefer a handheld mic a bit longer/thicker but will keep this for sure as it fits very easily into my kit as a backup. Doesn't need to be protected, just throw it in! The output is very low. I have to push my MixPre-D a little more that I'd like to to get a decent level. I'd recommend the 635N/D-B with its neodymium magnet. (I haven't used that model but am told it has a higher output level.) ... More

Essential and very useful. Professional interview kits should always contain this OMNI microphone or one very similar to it. If you get in the habit of using an OMNIDIRECTIONAL mic for handheld interviews, you will eventually realize that many, many interviews are saved from the awful off-mic level dropout that very often occurs wirh any handheld cardiod or unidirectional style mic.

Capsule may be omni, but the mic itself has directionality - one assumes because of the housing. Great clean or outboard driven, nearly no proximity effect - excellent on vocals, guitar cabs, and near-miraculous for acoustic guitar midrange. As for drums - If you have the means, hit your mixer's VU somewhat softly and then slam the tape level, and listen to your whole kit bathing in squishy forgiveness

I bring this mic to drum sessions even at amazing studios, if I'm not sure they'll have one, because I absolutely love the punchy, slightly lofi sounding 635a for a mono room mic. A very interesting sounding mic with no flab. Try it and you'll never want to mix drums without it again.

We always called this tried and true mic the Hammer because it is almost indestructable, a favorite for news gathering and professional location work. It has a full, crisp sound and sensitive pickup. Pretty good at minimizing vibrations from hand-holding.

This EV mic from the 60's is housed in a light weight cast housing that you could literally drive. nails with. I wanted an omni to use as a simple audience mic to mix in with in ears. This suit fine.

Wow! I'm loving this thing. Works on all kinds of sources. Super articulate microphone. Love it on electric guitar cabinet. I've used on acoustic guitar and bass cabinet also with good results. Definitely one of the best sleepers I've discovered.

It is a profesional micro and I am a vantage guy so this micro performs good in studio as well as on stage . I do use most of the time my EV 627 and EV 660A as well my EV RE10 . The EV 635 do not has the punch as my 627 but overall it is a good micro.

The 635 ENG microphone is the first and last mic you will ever buy. It just doesn't quit, no matter what the environment. The only reason I brought this one is because I lost one I had for almost ten years. The price is fair and B&H got to me within 48 hours.

At first I had a lot of doubts on such a small microphone, But I tested it in different condition and it has a great response for speaking voice or singing. The only thin I would change is that I'd prefer if it had a longer handheld
