SOLID Beginner's Tripod!!!

Dec 28, 2009

I use this product as a Hobbyist Photographer. This is NOT a professional quality tripod, but keeping that in mind, this tripod is awesome. It is of a very solid aluminum construction, it folds to a VERY small size for portability and comes with its own travel bag! It is FULLY adjustable to just about any size you could possibly need! While the framework is aluminum, the head is made of plastic, and I can see this wearing out over time, but it fun... Show More

Good tripod for the money

Oct 1, 2012

I use this to mount my Nikon shoe mounted flash units to this tripod. Because of it's small footprint and it's lightweight I can hold it in one hand if I need additional reach for my flash. I would not mount my professional Digital SLR Camera with lens onto this tripod because this tripod can only support 4.4 lbs. Although, I have used this tripod with much sucess attaching it to my Canon G12 (point n shoot camera). I like that it comes with a qu... Show More

Sunpak SU6601UT tripod FAIL

Oct 24, 2014

This unit is a bad implementation of a good idea. The center post will actually flex when fully extended. The legs are wobbly when fully extended. The bubble level is barely visible when SLR attached - almost useless. If it wasn't for the low price I got it at I would have returned. This will be my car trunk tripod - there for when I forget to bring along a good one. This tripod is a good example of building a product in the cheapest possible way... Show More

Solid performer at a bargain price

Feb 23, 2012

Thanks to B&H this tripod arrived just in time for my Hawaii trip. Very compact and fit perfectly on my Lowepro 102AW tripod holder. Not as lightweight as those flimsy $10 but at 2.88 lbs it wasn't an avil either. I was able to carry it on my Lowepro for an entire day walking the streets and around Int'l Marketplace. I love the quick release plate that is included which let me mount the camera in seconds. Very quick and easy to extend and compres... Show More

Material Concerns

May 3, 2017

I've bought several Sunpaks over the years. With some metal and a good deal of plastic, they don't last forever. They are inexpensive, and light to carry. Weight can be an issue; I have had the wind blow a tripod over. This most recent Sunpak, seems a bit flimsy. The plastic portions of it seem like they may be more brittle than in the past, so plastic fatigue will be a concern. I keep the tripod in my trunk, ready for use, so perhaps extremes of... on the plus side they're compact and light and cheap. on the minus side the components snap if you breath on them too heavy. very low grade, fragile plastic. i bought three for a project. they started breaking on first use. to their credit sunpak replaced. but the replacement snapped almost immediately too. it's problematic when you can't tighten a tripod down so it doesn't move. defeats the purpose. pretty much useless for anything but the light... Killer tripod for the price

Feb 28, 2012

I use the product mostly for indoor photos and landscape photos outside. It's light and feels durable, the controls are intuitive. It's simple. It's great. I can see how it might be heavy/bulky for long hikes, but I much prefer the weight and balance of the tripod to my camera bag. :) I'd definitely suggest this as a first tripod or a standard tripod. Some users might find it a little short. I'm 6'1 and have to stoop a little uncomfortably to use the view finder at the tripods highest setting. That being said, I'm happy with the purchase price and it's a fantastic tripod for the dough!

This is a great Tri-Pod for the Price.

Mar 16, 2017

I have mixed views of this product. The cost was great, low cost. The function, is especially great, I like the Pan & tilt head. The height was awesome, I needed a taller tripod that folded up to no more than 3 - 4 ft. The plastic structure is a downfall. I like sturdy equipment like steel or metal structure like my old tripod. It can take a beating & rough handling. This tri- pod being plastic body limits where I can take it. I go to crowded events & big conventions where it must take punishment with out breaking. Otherwise a good economical tripod.

A Tripod Like this for How Much?

Apr 24, 2010

I just purchased a couple of these for a two-camera shoot. I cannot believe what I got for the money: two solid, well-built pieces of equipment. There's nothing cheaply-made about these units. The legs are solid aluminum, the joints are made from a very solid plastic. The head moves smoothly and there's a built-in level and a quick-release plate (extra included). Pan and tilts done easily, not jerky at all. Feet are very grabby. What else could you want, let alone for the price? I ordered five more, one for my brother, who's a semi-pro photographer.

A lightweight product.

Jun 27, 2011

I purchased the Sunpak 6601 UT to support a Panasonic Lumix FZ28 three years ago. I'm still using the tripod. It's not perfect, but ideal for my use because of its relatively low weight. I've carried it cradled in my arm while hiking on a 4 hour photo shoot. Sometimes it can even be too light. I've had a strong gust of wind blow it over - I caught it in time. There's a lot of plastic and lightweight metal that keep the weight down. I'd rate it OK for point and shoot, and compact cameras. A heavyweight SLR might exceed this tripod's load capacity.

Don't judge a book by its cover

Dec 24, 2012

A very lightweight tripod that's not suitable for many DSLR's, but I didn't buy it for its traditional use. I bought it to retrofit into an umbrella stand for my Westcott 43 bounce umbrella. By drilling two holes in two different places and attaching eyebolts, I was able to slide my bounce umbrella through the eyebolts.I used the quick release plate to attach my flash foot to. The retrofitted tripod can be placed in small spaces where a conventional light stand would be noticeable. I hope that explains well how I've used this tripod.

My Sturdy Friend

Dec 2, 2009

What a great buy! This tripod is light, but sturdy and reliable. The claws at the end of the feet offer support and keep you well rooted to the ground and the body is non-reflective, which is important if you are trying to be inconspicuous while watching wild-life. It is easy to use, and quick to extend/retract to any height. The head allows movement in all directions, and is great for panning shots. I love it. As with all tripods, the disadvantage is the lack of freedom you get with a camera in a fixed position.

Strong and handy Tripod

Jan 3, 2014

I bought the Sunpak 6601UT for a plein air painting workshop. I used it at the pastel workshop for 3 days. I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. This tripod is being sold elsewhere as part of a total plein air package for much more. It is a very sturdy tripod that folds down to a convenient size. I can fit it into my art backpack and carry all my gear without hurting myself like I would with a traditional dead trees easel. I also used it during my Open Studios event and it looks very professional in my home.

Good for light duty use

Apr 3, 2015

I bought this tripod strictly for off-camera flash use. It is very lightweight and I would hesitate to use this for a larger DSLR or any DSLR with a large lens. It appears to be well suited for point and shoots and maybe lightweight video cameras. I knew this was a lightweight tripod so I am not disappointed - but be sure this tripod is appropriate for your planned usage. It is lightweight and functions well. It has a good maximum height and the center column is geared and has a lock. Panhead works smoothly.

Terrific Tripod!

May 17, 2012

I got this to replace a 20 year old unit that had finally broken. This is a good solid tripod. It has two bubbles - one on the unit & one on the head, so it's easy to be certain that everything is level. It came with a spare head, which is nice - I mainly use this for my laser level, and it's good to be able to leave the laser attached to a head & have another for when I want to put my camera on there. It's easily adjustable & feels solid. I've only had it a couple of weeks, but no complaints so far.

Lightweight and very sturdy tripod!

Jul 25, 2010

I really like this tripod. For a great price you get a very good tripod! The only problem with this tripod is that you can'y always set it to the exact position you need, not all the time only for very specific shots. Nothing you should be worry about. I guess that's why it's so cheap! but I rather pay that than an extra $100 for more professional camera. I like the fact that it comes with a free case and a free extra quick release plate. All and all a great purchase! Very Recommended.

Simple, good, & inexpensive

Nov 14, 2016

I do video production, and while this is not my primary tripod (I use a tripod with a fluid head for pans and tilts), I use this tripod for an additional stationary camera (such as a small dslr or prosumer video cam) that I will not be moving during my shoot. For that purpose it works perfectly and is an excellent price. It is not heavy duty but seems sturdy for light weight purposes and I can easily move it when needed. I'm happy with my purchase and would buy more if needed.

Happy Buyer

Dec 9, 2016

Using these for off-camera flashes. They are pretty great for what they cost. They are not meant to be man-handled but will work well for my purpose. These were an alternative to the Slik tripods which were more expensive. Basically, I got 2 Sunpak tripods for the price of 1 Slik. I even modified them to hold an umbrella with the neat trick I learned from Scott Hargis...very cool. See attached pic. All you need is 2 eyebolts and a drill....so much less to deal with.

Lightweight, Cheap, Easy to Use

Oct 11, 2011

I use this tripod to shoot night photos around NY. I needed a lightweight tripod that I could lug around that could open or breakdown quickly. I also didn't want to spend very much money. This has been perfect! I like that it has the balance bubble thing (not sure the technical name) so that I know if my camera isn't even. And, it has a quick release, which is perfect for a photographer on the go. If you are looking for a CHEAP tripod, this is the way to go.

Inexpensive and lightweight

Jul 30, 2008

This is my first tripod. It's nice and light which makes it easy to carry around. I haven't had it very long, but the adjustment for spreading the legs out is getting a bit grabby and difficult already. It's also not as sturdy as other more expensive models, but I expected that. I would recommend it to friends who are saving for a sturdier tripod as I intended when I purchased this tripod. It will later be used to hold off camera flashes, and the like.

Extra Bang For Your Buck

Jun 21, 2010

After unpacking the tripod I had to go back to my invoice to see if I had made a mistake. The quality of the tripod is unbelievable for the price. I actually would have paid twice the price and still would have been pleased. This is a great bargain at a very reasonable price. I would recommend this tripod to anyone needing the ability to keep the camera still and secure. It even comes with an extra camera base plate and a very durable, compact case.

It's a tripod, a stiff one at that

Feb 5, 2014

Cants say much more than its a tripod and it works as intended. Sony NEX6 pops right up on it just fine. My only complaint is that the main shaft, that when you turn the handle to move it up/down is incredibly wobbly and takes a lot of pressure to wind it. It may be just my particular unit, but I used it sparingly, so it's not an issue. If you use tripods regularly, please look at a better quality step up. It will be a good decision long term.

Great for an artist

Nov 20, 2012

I use this tripod to attach my plein air painting easel and palette to. It stays steady while I paint and I can adjust it for watercolor or oil. I can also adjust the height of it for whether I wish to stand or sit. I like the quick release that will attach to the back of the easel. The legs are strong enough to support the palette. It is quick to set up and I can start painting right away. Works great for me.
