Good Telephoto Lens with APS-C

Jan 14, 2017

I bought this with a6500. Because a6500 using a crop sensor, it pushs the focal length to 1.5x. It is a pretty good telephoto lens.

I like

Jan 6, 2017

I bought the Sony 55-200 as an inexpensive lens to use while learning the A6500 before graduating to the GM series zoom and prime lenses. I travel a lot and have gotten tired of carrying 3 cameras to do what the A6500 will do in one small package. The lens is listed as not 100% compatible with the A6500, and I am in the early stages of marrying the lens and camera and playing with ISO and shutter speeds. So far, I have gotten enough sharp near an... Show More

Great lens

Jan 5, 2017

I had a superzoom b4. So, i was used to get slot more closer to objects than i get now. But when i compare the quality of the photos i understand why 7x zoom is better than a regular dsc- hx300 50x zoom.

Works fine

Its fine for daylight. Low light shooting could require something better than f/4.5, but bought in a bundle with the A6000, this lens is very well priced.

You get what you pays for...

Dec 21, 2016

I just compared this lens to my Canon L glass using an adaptor on my newly purchased A6000. At 200mm, my 70-200 f4 and 100-400 are very obviously sharper at 1:1 than this lens. I'm feeling better about my Canon lenses. :-)

Very useful lens at a great price

Dec 14, 2016

Have had one outing with this lens. Found it to easy to use with good looking photographs. Subject were birds and seals from a moving boat. Autofocus and continuous shooting were very handy. Weight of the lens is minimal making it a good addition to the small and light a6300.A good lens at a great price.

Great Sense on a Budget

This sense rocks. I've been photographing portrait style shots from mid way back in the audience for student recitals etc. Great quality for a cheaper lens if you can deal with the smaller aperture potential.

Under-rated

Nov 18, 2016

In my opinion, this is one of the best value Sony lenses you can buy for any of Sony's systems, let alone just e-mount. Some of the sharpest shots I've taken I took with this thing. It performs WAY better than the dxo ratings, in my opinion. I've spend more money on a lot of other lenses that performed the same if not marginally inferior. The biggest thing I've learned about lenses over the years is that you really can't really on ratings. You ha... Show More

A better choice for a first lens than the kit lens offered

Sep 6, 2016

I bought my A6300 and decided instead of the 16-50 kit lens, I would go with the Sony 55-210 4.5-6.3. It is a great choice for those first starting out on the Sony E-mount system. The Optical Steadying system on this lens does work fairly well. Not as good as in camera systems but the A6300 does not have that technology so the OSS inside this lens is a good thing. This lens can be sharp depending on your focal length choice and the F stop. I foun... Show More

Not really a sharp lens

Aug 24, 2016

I have had this lens now for about 8 months and rarely use it. I find the lens is not very sharp. Focus is pretty fast and the size makes it very easy to carry. But, at 300mm, when I look at the photos at 100% magnification on the computer, the photos have a look as if in oil. If you look at the photos at 50% magnification they look really good. At 100% magnificationthings are soft. 100mm to 200mm are ok. 300mm is soft.

Good aditional lens for the a6300

Jun 5, 2016

I got this lens when I ordered my Sony A6300. I am glad I did. I took it out to a local park with lakes and birds in the morning to see how it would perform. It did quite well. I was impressed by the quick focusing of the combination of the camera and lens. I was able to easily focus in on my subjects (birds in this case) even through trees. The only issues I had were user error. The lens is not heavy and bulky and great for a casual shooter like... Show More

Excellent on Sony Full Frame

May 30, 2016

I use that on my A7ii for an effective focal length reach of 80-315mm. It is light, compact and sharp. Focus quickly and is great in outdoor light. Probably not so good for indoor sports.

Decent lens for the money

May 28, 2016

This is not a killer lens, nor should one expect it to be for the price. That being said, it is a good value for the money (especially if you can get it at a bundle discount with a camera kit or body). Avoiding the fastest f stop and/or the extreme end of the zoom range and you can produce some wonderful pictures. Those two extremes will produce more obvious drops in the quality of the results. Makes a good complement to the SEL50F18 50mm f1.8 lens to create a good starter bundle.

Decent small zoom

Apr 7, 2016

Got this in a bundle with the a6300 and nailed a pretty good discount. For the money, the lens can't really be beat. I wish the aperture were a bit lower for more light gathering but the OSS keeps the shakes from ruining your shot with the slower shutter speeds.

Inadequate

Mar 30, 2016

I would have used this lens for portraits, wildlife, landscape and art photography. What I liked about the lens was that it's very compact and light weight, smooth and looks beautiful with the 6000 body and my Wacom tablet. Nice still life image of them all together. I found the lens quite slow (f4.56.3), really not sharp enough at any aperture, on a tripod, photographing a grid as a test. Nearly inadequate on the technical side. I could not use ... Show More

Shooting any lens wide open should be a last resort, unless your into portraits, so I haven't tried it. I have been very pleased with my results at f8 and f11. This is the longest lens I could find for my format at a reasonable price. My lens tests consists of wandering around taking pictures with it. I like my results and feel I could do 24 x 36(poster size) prints with this lens, which I have done with other lenses and my Sony A 6000 body. End result. I find it a good addition.
