What a Pleasant Surprise

Apr 30, 2018

I got this lens as part of a kit with a Sony a6500 that also came with the 16-50 lens. I was a bit skeptical of buying the setup with this lens, because I am used to shooting with a Canon 5d miii and some nice L lenses and have gotten used to the sharpness on those L lenses. I took a chance, because buying a "better" lens for the sony meant it was going to make the setup bulkier and heavier, and my goal was to get a lighter weight camera/lens set... Show More

A better choice for a first lens than the kit lens offered

Sep 6, 2016

I bought my A6300 and decided instead of the 16-50 kit lens, I would go with the Sony 55-210 4.5-6.3. It is a great choice for those first starting out on the Sony E-mount system. The Optical Steadying system on this lens does work fairly well. Not as good as in camera systems but the A6300 does not have that technology so the OSS inside this lens is a good thing. This lens can be sharp depending on your focal length choice and the F stop. I foun... Show More

ok but not great (a contradiction)

Dec 14, 2011

The lens is at best, ok ie. average and or I guess it kinda works. I use it on the sony 5n and have found it extremely aggravating to use autofocus in dim night or interior scenes searches, searches, searches, can't find focus loses focus, ugh! Because the body and lens do not have a harmonious relationship whatever gain the stabilization grants you (I have not seen any) is taken away in a jerky motion from just holding the unbalanced pair. My favoured E-mount lens thus far.

Sep 22, 2014

I got into the Sony Nex system recently when I acquired an A3000 camera body and two lenses, the 18-55mm kit lens and this excellent 55-210mm tele zoom lens. Between them, this one has better optics, better resolving power, better bokeh, and to my mind, better handling also. The longer barrel (about the size of a 12oz soda can) makes it easy to keep the camera nice and stable while shooting, especially with the OSS built in. It's a little bit on ... Show More

A Sharp and Aesthetically Correct Lens

May 22, 2014

I've had this lens for a few months and I've made countless photos through it, from macro shots of water drops in my garden (with a Nikon T5 supplementary lens) to telephoto shots in San Francisco, Yosemite, Las Vegas and Las Angeles. First, this lens is sharp. Even with the 5T adapter on it, it's sharp from edge to edge. Second, it's a very lightweight lens. That fits in perfectly with the concept of the NEX/Alpha mirrorless cameras, which is th... Show More

Fantastic Lens For The $$$

Jul 1, 2018

Start off by saying: I'm not by any stretch of the imagination, a professional photographer. I'm simply an enthusiast, and a major "gadget head". That being said,.. I've had this lens for over a year now, using with an A5100. I've got to the point where I use this lens almost exclusively with that camera, only using the kit lens when doing landscapes. Images are very clean and sharp at all focal ranges (to me). I'm sure there are professiona... Show More

Better than I thought it would be

Feb 13, 2015

I got this lens for $ over the holidays with the purchase of an a6000. I generally own/use very good glass, but I don't use long lenses that often and was hoping the 55-210mm would hold me over until I can afford to add a higher end tele-zoom. To my pleasant surprise my copy is quite a good lens and I won't be in any hurry to replace it. I've only tested it at f/8 on a tripod (because that is how I will use it). Very nice results at all the marke... Show More

Great zoom lens depending on your needs!!!

Dec 2, 2019

Image is pretty good for most shots, with sharpness at the center but at the edges and corners it can be soft throughout the aperture and zoom range. I usually abuse bokeh, which I wish it was better, but for this type of lens, I dont think its the right purpose if thats your plan unlike a prime lens. I havent used this for video purposes but it definitely helps when Im in situations where I need to get close to a subject to get a picture but ca... Show More

Good aditional lens for the a6300

Jun 5, 2016

I got this lens when I ordered my Sony A6300. I am glad I did. I took it out to a local park with lakes and birds in the morning to see how it would perform. It did quite well. I was impressed by the quick focusing of the combination of the camera and lens. I was able to easily focus in on my subjects (birds in this case) even through trees. The only issues I had were user error. The lens is not heavy and bulky and great for a casual shooter like... Show More

Feels and perform great

Nov 3, 2011

It has the same nice metal construction including also a metal mount as other NEX lenses, it has a rubber grip wich also feels nice, when zooming lens don't rotate and they included the lens hood... however I can't figure out why it isn't a petal hood, if you think about it ring does not rotate and it could be done. One downside is that is f6.3 on the tele side at 210mm, while other lenses are f5.6 at 200mm, you will only have f5.6 at 170-175mm o... Show More

Good Value for a Telephoto Zoom

Dec 20, 2011

I am quite impressed with the build quality and performance of this lens. Focusing and zooming rings feel smooth and tight. The rubber coverings make the lens easier to hold and zoom; I wish the same covers were on the 18-55mm NEX kit lens! Image quality seems to be consistently sharp across the whole focal range. Some slight softness at the outermost edges at 200mm. I wish that the lens had a wider maximum aperture, but I understand the limitati... Show More

Perfect for the NEX-7

Jun 14, 2012

I bought a Sony NEX-7 because I wanted a small camera to keep with me for situations where the 5DII package was too cumbersome. I got the 18-55 kit lens with the camera and then ordered the 55-210. I've used this new lens on one shoot, and I think it looks excellent for the price. I like the small diameter and overall size. Since the NEX-7 is my snapshot camera, for stills and video, I like to keep the weight and size down as much as possible. Th... Show More

It's not an f4.5 lens on an APS-C sensor

Dec 10, 2014

Sony is doing some pretty loose math by calling this an f4.5 lens on an APS-C camera. If it were on a 35 mm FF camera yes it would be f4.5 Let's do the math a 210 mm lens @ f4.5 = front diameter of 46.66 mm With the crop factor you have a 315 mm equivalent. The front diameter doesn't change so divide the 315 mm lens by 46.66 and you get an f6.7 lens, not an f4.5. If you think you're going to get an f4.5 lens on an APS-C sensor, you're not. The ph... You will have to work the shots with this lens, but you will get beautiful shots most of the time because is fairly sharp and has a very good IQ. The things I like the most about this lens: Build quality. It's mostly metal. The Optical Steady Shot. This lens is not very fast but the OSS helps a lot to keep the shutter down. Weight. I have not done a whole lot of picture taking with it yet but I have tested it some it is good for fairly long telephoto but not good for long range birding if you are looking to take pictures of birds you need at least 450mm or a 300mm lens on a APS-C sensor camera taking picture... I am a hobby photographer. Lets be honest. The NEX 5n is about as perfect a camera for the hobby photographer as one can puchase....BUT, it is not a pro camera. This lens is perfect for the camera and its intended purpose. I am happier with it than I was with the NEX adapter and a Sony A-mount lens(75mm-300mm). This is a great lens for everything from portraits to wildlife photography. Supplemented with the 16mm wide angle (and fisheye attachment) this is pretty much all you need in two lenses, making for a very versatile system with a minimum of components, bulk, etc. In fact, the only reason to own the 18-55mm lens if you want to reduce your camera to a single lens, in which case you might as well just get a simple point and shoot camera, without inte... Don't be fooled by pixel peepers, as opposed to photographers, and strange people who compare a $250 4.5-6.3 zoom lens to a Zeiss prime...lol.... If you own the A3000, 5000, or 6000 series cameras, this and the 18-55 or 16-50 kitwill give great results, once you learn to use something other than AUTO. Why spend A6300 type dollars and shoot AUTO...my good golly. And as for anyone using this on the A7 series, well, you're wasting money both ways. ... Show More

Extremely pleased with its speed, once I figured out how to tweak my A6000 via menus for fast action, etc. This lens actually stays on the A6000 body more often than not. I bought the Sony 55-200 as an inexpensive lens to use while learning the A6500 before graduating to the GM series zoom and prime lenses. I travel a lot and have gotten tired of carrying 3 cameras to do what the A6500 will do in one small package. Buying this lens was bit of an obvious choice with my Nex-5N and the 18-55 kit lens that came with it. What surprised more was how good this lens actually was, despite the deceptive weight and look. I like how the 18-55mm is good enough to keep on at all times, but the times i wish for the reach, the 55-210mm comes more than handy.
