Great all around lens.

Sep 5, 2019

I'm a recent convert from Sony A mount to full frame E mount cameras. I was surprised that the this lens is as heavy as it is when I opened the box. However the lens is well made, feels very durable and with a battery grip on my A7RIII it feels balanced when shooting. I haven't taken enough images since I received the lens but the images that I have taken are sharp edge to edge and the colour rendition is very nice. As with most Sony lens the bo... Show More

Almost great

Dec 13, 2017

I've been anticipating a lens in this range since I got my A7R2! It is smaller and lighter than the Canon 24-105L lens I used to use when I shot with Canon gear and easily as sharp. Unfortunately, at 24mm the vignetting at all 4 corners is extreme, hence 4 stars instead of 5. This phenomenon goes away around 26mm and lessens when you stop down, say from f4 to f16, but it is disappointing. B and H says it will do an exchange with me when more lens... Show More

Perfect General Purpose Lens

Jan 7, 2019

This is really a great zoom range for general travel photography (and other specific purposes). Sure, youre not going to take tight wildlife shots at 105mm, and youre not going to get those super-wide architecture shots, but for everything else this is really the sweet spot for a only-carry-one-lens day out. On top of the ideal range, this particular Sony lens is a fantastic performer. Great sharpness throughout the range, quick to focus, good sp... Show More

Very poor image quality

Jan 31, 2018

I just received this lens today after a long wait and it is on its way back. The lens has to be bad because at f8 and f11 the images are completely out of focus. I setup the camera on a tripod with my Sony A7R111, switched off the lens stabilization. I took a set of exposures at f4, 8, 11, 16, 22 at zoom ranges of 24mm, 70mm, and 105mm. I did one set with manual focus and another with auto focus. I did this test six times and every test showed f8... Show More

I am planning to make this my default lens for exotic trips. It is incredibly versatile and produces wonderful pictures. However, using my Sony alpha7RMIII,when the camera is set on auto and single-shot AF, I intermittently get the error message: This operation not available as follows: Focus Mode Single-shot AF After a few seconds I am able to take the picture without making any additional adjustments, but would like to avoid the loss of time (... Excellent choice!

Dec 22, 2018

When you want excellent results with minimal fuss, this is the one to mount onto your camera. Mine was part of a B&H kit bundled with the a7RIII. About a year of use has only confirmed that this is an excellent combination. Its sharp, reasonably fast, and focuses quickly, quietly, and accurately. This lens lives on my camera about 70% of the time, with the other 30% spread among a half-dozen others for special-purpose cases. If youre just ge... Show More

Well Made Sharp and Heavy

Jan 5, 2018

I haven't had a chance to completely test the lens, but so far it appears to be very sharp. I know Sony can't do anything size wise but it is a bit front heavy on the A7Rii. I'm countering that at least partially with a tripod "L" bracket. The Zoom ring is pretty stiff. I'm hoping it will loosen up with use. The build quality is superb. The auto-focus is fairly quick and quiet. So far I like the lens a lot. I wanted a lens that was going to work as a single lens that would minimize the number of lenses I carry with me. This looks looks like it will do the job very nicely. We'll see.

Excellent Walk Around and General Purpose Lens

Feb 11, 2018

I had been waiting for this lens since selling my Sony 18-105 as I own both cropped (a6500) and full framed (a7ii) camera bodies. The lens is sharp and well balanced for all purposes. I've shot anything from birthday parties to the Aurora Borealis with the lens and have not had any disappointments. If I had to have a single lens, this would be it. It also makes a great complement to my other lenses but I have a feeling this one will be with me far more than the others. Upcoming trip to Kauai will give me even more results but I have a feeling ... this lens will deliver.

A Seriously Fun and Versatile Lens!

Dec 26, 2017

This lens covers the perfect normal-to-slightly-telephoto zoom range that I use most, AND it has the highest magnification ratio (1:3) and close focus capability of any non-macro lens in this range. That's the fun part, since I can move in close when I'm in tight quarters with a subject and not lose focus. It is significantly sharper than the Sony 24-70mm f/4. The slightly heavier, larger 24-105mm is worth it for the increased quality and capability. This lens has become my new favorite! (Previous favorite was the Sony 90mm f/2.8 macro, which is also a superb lens!)

Very good everyday lens

Mar 22, 2019

It is pretty sharp for a zoom lens. The autofocus is pretty good in that its fast, accurate and quiet. The build quality is good and its not super heavy to carry around. The raw uncorrected images have quite a bit of vignetting @24mm f/4, in post-processing I had to drag the vignetting correction slider all the way up after I apply the default lightroom lens profile. The theory I heard is that the wide end of the lens is actually @~21mm and its designed in a way that you should ALWAYS correct it. I guess thats common for modern lenses anyway.

New Favorite Travel Lens

Oct 7, 2018

Rented this for recent trip to Iceland as I knew I would be hiking alot and didn't want to carry the 70-200 f/2.8 (my favorite all-rounder). After seeing the images I captured with it, promptly purchased when back home. This lens is fast, wicked sharp on my A7III, and its focal length is extremely versatile for travel. Was able to capture sweeping landscapes, cityscapes, and tight portraits without swapping out the lens. Relatively small, lightweight, and easy to carry around all day. For all you get with this lens, it simply is a GREAT value!

Fantastic!

Dec 13, 2017

Sony has come a long ways in the quality of their lens production since the days of the FE 24-70 f/4 days. In testing thisFE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens it equaled or bested all my other Sony Lenses which include: their 16-35mm f/4, the 35mm F/1.4, the 55mm F/1.8 and the 70-200mm F/4. It maintains its sharpness edge to edge, chromatic aberrations are under control and its resistance to flare is well managed, I highly recommend this lens especially for its comfortable balance (with the A7rIII) and popular focal lengths. A perfect travel lens.

Great Travel / Backpacking Lens

Oct 29, 2018

I picked up this lens for my Sony A7RIII to make it more weight and size friendly lens for traveling, hiking and especially backpacking. It has fulfilled the purpose perfectly. I am very pleased with the quality of the image format. It does reasonable well in low light too. The OSS and In-body 5 Axis Stabilization of the A7RIII seem to pair up well allowing me to hand hold in low light situations. I have successfully pushed my luck past the 1/(focal length) rule for sharp crisp images. This lens has definitely become my primary lens.

Great all-purpose lense

Nov 28, 2019

This has been my walk-around lens for many years, going back to my Canon days with their version. I know that many prefer the 24-70 f/2.8 and I use that on occasion as well, but I almost always find that I miss the extra reach more than I miss the extra stop (your mileage may vary). It is very sharp for a zoom, though, of course, not as sharp as a prime GM lens. Great choice for street, portrait, family events, and just walking around. If you need Macro capability or plan to shoot sports or wildlife, this is not the best choice.

Lens exceeded my expectations

Jul 9, 2019

This is a great lens, which has exceeded my expectation. I bought this lens as a replacement for my 24 - 240 zoom. The sharpness and color improvements were overwhelming. I only wish I had upgraded earlier. A faster 2.8 lens would be good, but since this a walk-around lens for me, the extra weight would be a burden. As it is It's a very comfortable lens mounted on the camera to carry. I use a cross body carrying strap with the camera lens facing downward. It works well for me. I love this lens which is a perfect range for me.

Great lens. So glad I got it.

Sep 16, 2018

This is a great lens. I had a collection of GM lenses and they were sitting there unused because they were so heavy. I decided to sell them and get this. Now my focal ranges are covered nicely with affordable, sharp lenses. Sony 12-24mm f4, Sony 24-105mm f4 and my Sony 55mm f1.8 and Sony 90mm f2.8 Macro. Perfect combination for travel and sharp all the way through. This lens has been on my camera for 3 weeks now and won't come off unless I have spacial needs for the other lenses I own. That's exactly what I wanted.

The Swiss Army Knife of Lenses

Jan 6, 2020

I will use this lens on my A7iii most of the time. I have been very pleased with it, and coming from an A77 I prefer the longer reach of this lens to the 16-50 mm f2.8 I had on the cropped sensor. Paired with the 85 mm f1.8, I am only missing a long telephoto (but have my eyes on the 200mm-600mm). While much heavier than a smaller zoom for micro 4/3rds, some of my favorite images come from vacations, so I am willing to carry this heavier lens. And it is quite a bit lighter than an f2.8. Very happy so far.

Sony 24-105mm f/4.

Apr 17, 2019

I have a Sony A7III and rented a few lenses to try and figure out what I wanted to purchase. I used this lens and found that it was a great all -aroundlens. I am not a professional photographer just enjoy taking pictures, so this is a perspective from atypical dude. There are prime lenses that may provide a better picture but this lens does a great job at taking portraits to landscapes. The pros of this lens are that you only need one lens thus less weight versus multiple lenses and extra weight.

Great walkabout lens!

Jun 9, 2018

If I can only take one lens... I take the Voigtlander Apo Lanthar, or I take the Sony 24-105mm. The Lanthar is wonderful in every respect. It is, however, limited to its one focal length, and it is manual focus. The Sony 24-105 is flexible, sharp, and quick to focus. Image quality is very solid, with nothing to complain about. The focal range is perfect for all day shooting - perfect when you travel, or need quick flexibility. I also like it's close focus ability.

Most useful lens in my bag!

Aug 3, 2018

This lens is so useful, it's always in my bag attached the the camera. In terms of sharpness, at 42 megapixels it can't compete with the primes. But it's good enough at all apertures and focal lengths that unless you're pixel peeping, the photos are plenty sharp. I take a specialty lens for the subject I plan to shoot, like the 12-24mm. Then I throw this one in the bag in case I need other focal lengths. Over and over again I've ended up shooting with it, and liked the results.

LOVE IT!

May 22, 2018

I recently switched from 20 years of Nikon shooting after a theft and now have three Sony bodies and some of their best lenses, they are so fast and accurate it's amazing, Comparing my previous D750 or D800 with the 24-120 and the A9 or A7III and the 24-105 is not even fair. This most recent lens really is the best midrange zoom I have ever had in my hands and faster than most other companies 2.8 glass. Even better is the response from my clients who are equally impressed.

Flare Causes Very Low Contrast - Lens Is Not Usable!

May 16, 2018

Most landscapes are characterized by what appears to be a sheen over the image that appears to be flare. Holding a board to supplement the lens shades helps and increases contrast noticeably. This problem is even apparent on overcast days and when shooting well away from any source of bright light. The lens is basically unusable. I was just a little too late making the decision to return it, about 3 weeks, and B&H would not accept the lens back, so I am stuck!

Versatility without Regrets

Dec 8, 2017

Very impressed in my first week with this lens... It is sharp and has great pop for a zoom. With my 24-70 f4 I was always looking for more reach and when I got to Lightroom I was often regretting that I hadnt used a prime. I havent had that sinking feeling once yet with the 24-105. My only knock is the build quality. Not bad, but a bit stiff and plasticky compared to the other Sony lenses. But overall it is small and light so Im happy to make that trade off.

SHARP walkaround lens, ZERO regrets

Mar 19, 2018

WOW is all I can say. Yes, it is worth the money if you've got a high-res sensor. The 24-70 F4 on a 42MP sensor was a huge disappointment. The old optics just didn't cut it on my A7RIII. The 24-105 F4, however, is on another level completely and honestly it rivals some of my primes in sharpness. Maybe I just have a stellar copy. Bottom line, this lens is nearly always on my camera and if you're OK with F4, you will not regret investing in this sweet glass.
