Trying to look on the bright side, but...

Apr 6, 2016

I was excited to try an in-house (Sony-only) developed lens on my A7Rii, and this lens was garnering some rave reviews. Unfortunately for me, this lens doesn't cut the mustard. The unfortunate thing about camera sensors becoming so advanced is that optical deficiencies become more immediately apparent. Comparing center-image sharpness between this lens and other primes, the 28mm f/2 just doesn't stack up, at any aperture. In my (non-scientific) e... Show More

Lightweight, Compact, Sharp and Relatively Inexpensive

Jun 16, 2015

I bought the Sony SEL28F20 lens because it is small and lightweight. It also happens to be a great lens. First, let me say that I am a Nikon user, but last year I purchased a Sony A7 with the Kit lens as a travel camera when the price dropped. I'm now in my late sixties and I have a bum neck and worn out rotator cuffs. My two heavy Nikon bodies D610 and D800 with heavy to really heavy lenses attached are becoming intractable for walk around photo... Show More

Best in class

Jun 9, 2015

I generally prefer the FE 55mm f/1.8 which is basically the best overall prime I've ever seen. But, there are scenarios where I need something wider. I thought the FE 35mm f/1.4 was the answer but later realized it's far too enormous for the same quality of life I was getting with the 55mm lens. So here comes the 28mm, less than 1/3rd the price, a little wider, a stop darker, and absolutely tiny. I figured it must be garbage. Nope. The 28mm lens ... Show More

Little Jewel

Sep 24, 2015

Initially I paired the almost perfect Sony FE 55/1.8ZA with my A7 but the focal length did not suit my preferred shooting style. I watched the gradual release of alternative new FE full-frame lenses but nothing was tempting or affordable, particularly since Sony strayed from their initial concept of a compact mirrorless system with bulky lenses typical of DSLRs. Finally this FE 28mm f/2 appeared and immediately appealed based on reasonable price,... Show More

I use it for Street Photography

Aug 19, 2019

This review is properly formatted using paragraphs - I hope B&H doesn't run all the sentences together! I used this lens on a Sony a7 iii. I often set the lens for f4, 1/800 sec, and Auto ISO. Besides routine tests, I used the lens for street photography, at festivals, and at night. (A) Daytime - Sharpness Excellent! Wide-open at f2.0, in bright sunlight, the lens is sharp. If you pixel peep, the lens is a bit crisper at f/2.8. In com... Show More

Good lens and not too pricey !

Mar 22, 2015

I got it a few days ago in Toronto, Canada (not thru B&H) on 19th March 2015 ... apparently it's shipping around the world (Asia first) in limited quantities. I did some initial tests and it's pretty sharp in the central area at f/2 but gradually gets less sharp to the left/right borders. I'll be using this lens close up and wide-open on various objects, like food and the sharpness has to be acceptable at the borders ... I've done enough close up... Show More

Excellent Cheap prime

Aug 16, 2016

I work with the A7RII but I bought it more for my A6300 as a 42mm walk around lens. In the A6300 works great. Fast autofocus, sharp and accurate it was a great decision as a 50mm for my a6300, But i also test it in my A7RII and compare it with my FE 24-70 F4 zeiss. The 28mm is faster (f2.0) so you can have more blurred backgrounds, the sharpness is outstanding even in f/2.0, and great until F/11. Does have a noticeable barrel distortion but that ... Show More

Phenomenal little lens!

May 19, 2015

I am a hobby photographer shooting with an A7. Since getting this lens I have used it as a walk around lens and have done a bit of landscape photography with it. The lens is light but well built. It has a very good feeling in the hand with a smooth focus ring (focus by wire) that adapts to how quickly or slowly you are turning it. Though not as straightforward as having definite stops on either end of the spectrum, it does work well for manual fo... Show More

Amazing for wide portraits + landscapes & very affordable =

Jul 31, 2017

I bought this lens to use with my Sony Alpha a9. I needed something wide, prime, sharp, and light/compact for travels + run & gun shooting. I shoot fashion, beauty, and artistic portraits and this lens has been AWESOME for that. What I love about this lens is that it's fairly tiny, keeps the weight down. I pack this with my Sony FE Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 55mm F1.8 ZA & Sony FE 85mm F1.8 lenses. Not exactly a replacement for the true 35mm, but if yo... Show More

Excellent value for money, but soft at f/2

Jan 21, 2019

If you are used to Leica 28mm Summicron lenses, this Sony lens is not an equivalent. But for an autofocus lens, it is really compact, making it a nice reportage lens with your full-frame Sony E mount cameras. It is soft at f/2 even in the central areas, but it draws a decent bokeh wide open, so you can do shallow DoF shots, if you are willing to apply some selective sharpening in post-processing. But stop down to f/2.8, and images become signific... Show More

Decent Lens But Check It Out Carefully

Mar 7, 2016

Today, I just got my 4th one from B&H- Great place to buy with confidence- and it's a keeper! I had to send 3 others back, however. The other 3 most likely had element tilt issues. They were either unacceptably soft down about 15% of the left side from top to bottom, or the same softness all the way down about 15% of the right side. I expect a little bit of corner softness on these lenses, but this was on one side only and all the way down the en... Show More

Love this lens!

Jul 8, 2016

So, initially I was a little skeptical of this lens. It got rave reviews but it is cheap for a full frame lens. After a lot of deliberation I figured I would give it a shot to test it out and I am extremely glad that I did. I have only had it for a few days, and I have not a chance to completely test it out, however what I have gotten so far is extremely high quality! I personally enjoy the 28mm focal length a lot, but I do tend to shoot a little... Show More

Very lightweight cute little lens

Feb 25, 2016

I bought it for my A7S II and A7R II. It seems to perform better with A7S II because it has only 12 Mpix instead of 42, which makes the lack of corner sharpness less noticeable. It's really light and small, I can put it in my pocket and not even feel it in there! Its focus is silent, but not lightning fast, I'd say average. For the money it's a great lens, and for some reason to me it's the cutest lens I have, go figure... What disappoints me is ... Show More

Excellent lens (if you get a good copy)

Jul 12, 2016

I almost didn't return my first copy of this lens but I'm glad I did. It just didn't live up to the hype. I though that for a lens this cheap may be my exception were too high. The center seemed sharp enough. Sure the corners were soft wide open but isn't that the general complaint with this lens? I even tried tested for de-centering but couldn't find anything significant. In the end the obvious coma in the corners wide open swayed me. The lens I... Show More

Great walkaround lens for my a6000

Mar 3, 2017

Bought this to replace the 18-55mm kit lens as a walk around for my a6000 and have loved it so far. It's sharp and fast and wide enough for general usage. I originally thought I would miss the OSS from the kit lens but I have had no problems with camera shake without it so far, although I admittedly haven't done much shooting with this in low light. I have mostly been shooting with this outside on sunny days or during sunset. One thing I did noti... Show More

My new favourite lens

Oct 7, 2015

This little guy is my new favourite lens - small, affordable, fast, with excellent IQ. It pairs nicely with the IBIS on the A7RII. 28mm F/2 is perfect for walking around at night, and I am no longer scared of the dark. There are two unexpected downsides - aperture noise and chromatic aberration. The aperture is not loud by any means, but it is audible, unlike my other FE lenses. But it means that even with fully electronic shutter, it's not silen... Show More

Inexpensive Quality

Apr 28, 2016

When I bought my A7RII, I was deciding what lenses I wanted to begin with. Since I formerly had an APS-C type Nikon dSLR, I had to part with my former fleet of lenses. I began with the Zeiss FE 55mm F1.8 lens. It's truly astounding, but it comes at a high cost. So I thought perhaps the next lens should be a little less strain on the wallet. The Sony FE 28mm F2 lens. This little lens is fairly lightweight, and also has exceptional build quality. N... Show More

Great for gimbal work!

Mar 17, 2017

I bought this to complement my 10-18mm for use with an a6300 and a Pilotfly H2 gimbal. I found that the 10-18 is great for some stuff but often is too wide. Also the 10-18 is only an f/4, so I wanted something a little tighter and a wider aperture. The 28 really fits the bill. On my a6300 it's more like a 42mm. I don't shoot many photos, but for video work in 4K it's super sharp. It also focuses really close, which is great. It's lightweight and ... Show More

I'm very satisfied with the purchase and the pictures I get from this lens are sharp and gorgeous! I sold my 35 2.8 zeiss to get this lens, and i don't regret it. Best all round lens for A7r

May 26, 2015

This lens at 28 mm and f2 is actually a game changer for the A7r, because with it I can finally reliably get clear in focus images that fully utilize the enormous potential of the a7r sensor. And it does this with a hugely useful field of view for many kinds of shots including especially much better low light images than achievable with the many f4 lenses provided for this camera. It is easy to take strikingly clear in focus shots, partly because... Show More

Very light weight makes it ideal for hikes. Quiet and super fast focus on the A7iii. Image quality is great for the cost, not as sharp as the Zeiss and Sony G series, but pretty darn good. Wide open aperture is a little softer, but by 2.8 its sharpened up. Good bokeh. Very good on the flare and coma. The only con - astrophotography is hard with this lens due to the in-camera manual focus (clutch). There is no way to find set point and mark it o... Show More
